They are cutting medical research funding, ACA subsidies, food stamps, support for family caretaking, and seem to want to return people with severe physical and developmental disabilities into the hellholes called institutions they used to occupy. Packaged plant based meats may seem a bit spendy until you realize there are no bones, skin, or gristle ground into it. No pink slime.
There are several on the market to try. Most of the protein comes from beans, which is a superfood. Just don’t eat too much!
For awhile now we've cut our consumption of both beef and pork on the advice of nutritionists who recommended using meat as more of a condiment than a 'main,' as in many casseroles, Chinese, Indian and other cuisines. (I am learning to cook international.) The meat we do buy is 100% organic and costs a fortune, but is well worth it to reduce the chance of food contamination. The meat is locally grown and handled locally field to table. My sense is that if everyone would at least partially veer in this direction, the demand for possibly tainted foreign meat would tumble.

Saint Reagan famously uttered the first nine words of that sentence to deride the notion of government, and in effect launch the decent into the epic corporate and civic corruption that today grips America and gave us POSOTUS, a sham Repugnican Congress, and a fascist Federalist subsidized Supremely corrupt Court. Today, corruption is so normalized the legacy media yawns peacefully and treats it as business as usual. Democratic “leadership”, meanwhile, is loathe to take a stand, unwilling to exercise what power it has, preferring to devote its energy to guarding the fort against the rise of desperately needed reformers. This applecart is overdue for a massive upset.
Last week, I bought half a dozen commercially-packaged hamburgers because they were a bit thinner than normal - easier to eat in burger buns, I thought. I froze 4 and left 2 sealed in plastic for 2 days in the fridge. When we took them out to grill. we noticed the meat had turned gray. That is a first. The grilled meat tasted okay, and we did not get sick. But that sure suggests that the meat might not have been "made in the USA."
Maybe the most disturbing phrase here is “mystery meat,” because apparently it describes both the hamburger and the policymaking. A billionaire meatpacker gets a private Oval Office meeting, argues for cheaper imports, and the next day policy moves in a direction that could benefit his industry. That doesn’t automatically prove corruption. It does mean the public deserves a hell of a lot more transparency than “trust us, and please enjoy your unlabeled beef.”
Yet another reason to stop eating meat, although they have also made life unsafe for us salad-eaters, too. I have so many questions. When they kill wild horses, what becomes of that meat? What else gets swept into the great meat-grinder at the packing plant? What happens when the Mexicans and Haitians that work in those packing plants are captured by ICE and hustled out? Why are our dietary standards coming to resemble those of Bob Kennedy, not Michelle Obama? And of the two of them, who looks better these days?
The primary focus of Upton Sinclair's novel were actually the horrible working conditions in the meat-packing industry. Contamination and spoilage were just part of the problems which came from the attempts to cut corners, reduce labor and other costs, and increase profits, regardless of who got hurt or sick. They were supposed to have and did have inspectors (I believe under state laws) but there was a system of bribery and the extremely long hours and horrible conditions led to constant lapses and violations. I happened to finally start reading the book within the last few weeks after it had been sitting on the bookshelf for years. It is so sickening and depressing that I have to take frequent breaks from reading. It is clear that, regardless of the industry, the profiteers and crooks will stop at nothing to "make a killing", and only stringent regulations and controls exercised by government and strictly enforced will protect the public, consumers, and workers. Thom has hit another nail squarely on the head.
If nothing else, Trump and Secretary Brainworm have made it clear public health is not a concern for them.
It's a concern because if the weak die prematurely, Social Security is not paid out as fast.
