Industries of the polluting kind have forever been plunking down their toxic venues next to minority homes and next to poor majority homes.

Now, in the spirit of equalizing the horror, the suburbs and exurbs are targeted and partaking.

Home devaluation. Unsourced cancer. Sky-high electric bills. And a steady 24/7 racket.

Oh my.

And the Trumps and cronies get mysteriously richer*.

#VOTE to lasso AI like a rodeo calf. Lasso Krasnov the Russian, too, while you're at it.

#SEND Barron into the US NAVY.

Sir,you can push back against Nvidia, they are the source of the data center and AI expansion.

But now it's happening to largely white, rural America, too. There could be some opportunities to organize rural, white America and urban African America here.

Sometimes a picture is worth 1000 words. The pic Thom generated for this post should press the woke button in everyone's head. Americans need to learn the Billionaire 3 Rs. All of them are reckless, ruthless, and rapacious.

Corporate Democrats take note: Rather than devoting your energies to undermining progressive candidates, the DSA, etc., and vilifying Hassan Piker, etc., while empowering AIPAC, the ADL, and your neolib donors and consultants, etc., do us a solid and return to New Deal principles. That would be consistent with honoring the Constitutional oath you took. The Democratic Party’s abysmal popularity is directly attributable to decades of hypocritical noise making. The Repugnican Party has given us orchards of low hanging fruit. Harvest season will soon be here.

It’s time to act in rejecting these horrendous air and water sucking institutions.

Of course they want to use regular Americans environments as a method to their madness. The evidence that has been gathered is not encouraging. We know these corporations owned by the wealthy are ruthless when it comes to endangering our environment for their almighty buck.

Do not trust any of their assurances. We have been on this road for quite some time and the only enrichment from these people goes into their pockets . Make no mistake . Our pockets will be empty in no time. They are masters at ruining the environment for us , and taking over our natural resources and our lives . We need to fight diligently and doggedly to keep these threats from our children ourselves and the world in general.

David's avatar

Patricia, you are 100% right.Nvidia is the biggest backer of the data centers,Jensen Huang is the CEO. He is thumbing his nose at all of us and saying, you're going to pay,we are not going to pay.It is time to fight back against these arrogant pigs. We cannot depend on legacy media and Corporate Dems to do anything to help.

Lilla Russell's avatar

David, what do you think are the best and most effective ways for us everyday citizens to fight these greedy Corporations besides zillions of us showing up to vote for progressive Dems on Nov. 3rd? Hungary overturned authoritarians by massive uprising but it took 16 years. We don't have that kind of time. This current regime under Trump needs massive resistance NOW. I'd very much welcome your opinion. Thanks.

David's avatar

Lilla, the most effective way to fight back is to 1.Boycott CNBC,they are huge supporters of Nvidia and Facebook( Meta).Call them @877-280-4548 and let them know you are going to boycott the products advertised on CNBC. Jim Kramer is the guy who supports both.

The second way is call the financial organs that support Nvidia like Fidelity through their ETF-FDG and Vanguard thru their ETF VGT. Tell them they are supporting a company that thru their CEO Jensen Huang has promised 25-30% unemployment thru the use of AI. He gleefully announces he can't wait for the massive unemployment caused by AI. Remember his name Jensen Huang.

Lilla Russell's avatar

David, one more question please. Does Schwab also support Huang? I brace and hold my breath for the answer. Thank you.

Lilla Russell's avatar

Thx again David for this additional info about CNBC (which I never watch) but will gladly make that phone call. Also I so appreciate your other info about the financial organs that support Nvidia like Fidelity’s fund as well as Vanguard’s fund that promises 25-30% unemployment due to AI. Huang’s gleeful reaction to all those people losing jobs is despicable. My goal is to not invest in or support these greedy, amoral billionaires. I so appreciate your info about Fidelity and Vanguard and need to make some changes to align with my values.

How many Tech Bros can Argentina hide? They have been exposed by these data centers and the dirty deals they are constantly cutting with local, state, and national politicians. Expect more of them to flee.

Why do you think they really want Greenland? Cold climate and plenty of cold water! They want control of everything in the Western Hemisphere---no rules, no regulations. Look-up The Technate of America in WIKI. That's the real goal.

"We The People" are in the way along with our pesky democracy. The Tech Bros and Crypto Creeps are fascists one and all. They will fail. Let's get loud. Thanks Thom and Company for helping EVERY day. See you in the streets.

I fail to see the advantages of the so-called AI centers for the public; for the last fifty or so years the use of computers has burgeoned so - and we have been reaping its benefits - so how is the AI that the technocrats want to thrust upon us any different, or in any way an improvement over what is already happening? the public needs job opportunities more than it needs the increased leisure that AI is supposed to provide.

Jan Feeler's avatar

Good of you to connect those Greenland dots!! It had not occurred to me!

Because of how nearly every invention these days tends to be exploited by those with the most selfish megalomaniacal intentions, I've become something of a Luddite. But in itself, there is nothing evil about technology. Maybe some things we would be better off not having, owing to the fatal flaws in human character. But the need for strict, strong regulation of our technology, from AI to guns, is the only way we can save ourselves from ourselves.

Lilla Russell's avatar

Thank you Thom for all of this disturbing info about Data Centers and how the AI companies are getting the public to pay for the massive amount of water and electricity that is necessary--not to mention the amount of land they require. The health problems and pollution that results from these data centers is horrific. I hope that all the progressive social democrats running for the House and Senate can see this article of yours and incorporate this important info into their campaign speeches. So far, I haven't heard enough politicians making this a priority in their chosen talking points. It's only independent media, like substacks, and now especially yours, that is focusing on this crucial topic and the facts. In my personal opinion, I'd like AI and data centers to not exist.

David's avatar

Lila, thanks for your post. You will not get the media or corporate DEMS to pushback, they have Nvidia stock and have made a lot of money. The pushback has to be against Jensen Huang(CEO of Nvidia) and CNBC-Jim Kramer. Also against the financial institutions that hold Nvidia stock.

Lilla Russell's avatar

Thank you David for your reply. You are so right about "the pushback needing to be against the CEO of Nvidia, CNBC-Jim Kramer and the financial institutions that hold Nvidia stock". Yes, the mainstream media and corporate DEMS won't pushback since "they have Nvidia stock themselves and have made a lot of money". I refuse to buy AI stock, particularly Nvidia as I won't invest in anything that is against my values including oil, etc. The health of all sentient life forms, particularly Mother Earth is my primary concern. Hence, I am not rich but money and power were never my values so I can easily live with myself and sleep at night. I live a simple life and just need enough for essential needs.

I do hear and see this issue addressed on TV, but I mostly watch MS.NOW and CNN and PBS.

Lilla Russell's avatar

Yes, I only watch MSNOW and PBS for news on TV--particularly Rachel and Lawrence O'Donnell on MSNOW. I rarely watch TV anymore. I prefer reading real books in which I can feel and turn the pages, like the old days. I consider books of my choosing beloved close friends.

Great post. Today on CNBC,Jim Kramer had a conversation with Jensen Huang( Nvidia) about AI and what the future holds for AI. Huang is determined to expand the use of AI worldwide, with Nvidia chips. He is not concerned about the threat of AI creating massive job loss,he is gleeful about that possibility. CNBC ,Jim Kramer are allies of Nvidia.Nvidia also supplies the chips for the data centers that are negatively impacting many states. Lets be clear about what is happening,Jensen Huang is saying : he is going to shove AI down our throats, wheather we like it or not.

Yesterday, the courts fined Meta(Facebook) 17.1 billion dollars for continuing to scale up social media posts that entrap children. Each new 13 yr old is worth $270.00,they have monetized the value of your children and grandchildren. How many kids have tried to commit suicide as a result of the negative feedback from their social media posts. It is time to put Mark Zuckerberg behind bars for the damage he has created.

Lilla Russell's avatar

Thank you David for letting us know about Kramer's conversation today with Huang about AI and yesterday's info you shared about Meta's scaling up social media posts to entrap children. Just disgusting and horrifying. This is why I believe that "The love of money is our greatest sin" and will eventually ensure our demise as lost humans unless we miraculously change our values. Thanks again David for your post today.

It's not because of Trump. Locally in Illinois and northwest Indiana, there have been several centers proposed and Democratic city councils and representatives have been holding tumultuous town halls in which almost all residents are expressing adamant opposition to data center development in their districts. The projects are approved regardless. Gretchen Whitmer made a hot mic comment (which pundits are trying to convince us that we didn't hear) referring to the reality that our voices do not matter when it comes to making such decisions. But development of toxic industry in poor or working class communities is nothing new, just more malignant as we've handed over our well-being to politicians who work hard for the money.

BlackRock has been buying publicly traded power companies and taking them private. BlackRock is currently in the process of buying AES Corporation, which provides electricity to parts of Indiana and Ohio. BlackRock is also heavily invested in data centers.

Lilla Russell's avatar

Thank you for your info Mr. Belongs in the Mountains! So nice to see you here on Thom's substack. Btw, the only thing on my bucket list now is to see, feel, hug, smell and touch the Redwoods as I have an unbelievable bond with trees and surely belong in the mountains myself. I'm going to visit a friend in September who lives in the Redwoods in Northern California. I can hardly wait! Stay well and enjoy every single day with which you are blessed.

Tim Everton's avatar

Lila, when you visit the redwoods (I'm assuming Mendocino county) rent a convertable to drive through. I did it in one years ago and will never forget the beauty, the majesty of those trees.

Lilla Russell's avatar

Thx Tim. My friend from college in the 60’s whom I haven’t seen in about 40 years is picking me up at Santa Rosa airport and then she described how we’ll be driving for 2 hours through the Redwoods and I’m sure I’ll be in awe and in heaven with tears filling my eyes.. Yes, she lives in Fort Bragg right near Mendocino and literally in the Redwoods. I bet you won’t ever forget the beauty and majesty of those trees Tim. Thx so much for your reply.

Tim Everton's avatar

The she must also be well aware of the botanical gardens there in Ft. Bragg. Another of the most beautiful natural spectacles I have ever seen when at peak. Enjoy!

Lilla Russell's avatar

Thank you. I’ll make sure to ask her. So you know what time of year they are at peak?

Infiltration Of Fascist Republicans Into State Government(bit.ly/4qKHtcc)

By the way fascist Republicans infiltrating key positions in government make it easier for data centers to get passed along to communities whether they like it or not.

Bannon talked about this infiltration of fascists over the last 10y into state and local governments. Of course fascist run states under the banner of the Republican party focus on woke cultural war issues since those are favorite fascist topics and follows a similar pattern of the Neo Nazi movement in Europe.

Moms of Liberty infiltrated school boards in Florida but WE the People fought back in Sarasota where all the right wing scandal ridden women were voted out of their school board positions. Remarkably in that election even teenagers volunteered to knock on doors for the anti fascists running.

So this infiltration like a cancer is taking over government positions like Secty of State and is indeed dangerous as Nevada's SOS told MSNOW last week. It's up to WE the People to up our civic obligations to be on the lookout for fascist infiltrations.

I firmly hope the entire country supports AOC's bill for a complete moratorium on the building of all and ANY new Data Centers (Mass Surveillance Centers) for the foreseeable future. To me, Data Centers are the 2nd worst human invented thing to happen to Humanity since the World began. to me, Data Centers are the 2nd worst man invented thing to happen to humanity since the world began.ilding of all and any new Dats Centers (Mass Surveillance Centers) for the forseeable future.

Mine are not "so-called"! We've had Bonnie Watson Coleman for years. She's retiring and Adam Hamawy is running to replace her. He has proven enormous courage. Our 2 Senators are effective and truly devoted: Cory Booker and Andy Kim. I wish all other states were this fortunate.

Better to slow AI "progress" to a snail's crawl than hasten the destruction of the planet with these Frankenstein monster data centers. Why not just start incinerating us? I mean, we are getting there. I would love to make every AI vulture forced to live next to one of the damn things. Wonder how enthused they would remain after a bit.

VALERIE MELUSKEY's avatar

Great song at the end!

Thank you for addressing our AI Data centers debacle head on. The only people in favor of these centers are those who've been paid off or who are the billionairs who are making it their business. They are in it only for the money--in most cases they are not those who developed the AI. Please, continue to bring this issue to the world's attention.

About your site: Why is it so hard to log in? I keep being told that I'm offering an incorrect code when I keep putting in the new code within a few seconds. After telling me I've run out of chances, I was apparently finally "accepted with a password." Fix your I for intelligence--clean up the site.

Lilla Russell's avatar

Valerie, I too so thank Thom for "addressing our AI Data centers debacle head on and also urge Thom "to continue to bring this issue to the world attention". It is crucially important. Yes, the only people in favor of these centers are the billionaire founders, supporters and unfortunately greedy yet uninformed and naive everyday citizens who simply are all "in it only for the money". I so hope that eventually we will create a new governing system that truly works for ALL people and also a new educational system that is based primarily on teaching critical thinking skills and empathy. It also needs to include all of the arts and listening and communication skills which can teach us how to live cooperatively and harmoniously with all life forms. Thank you for your comment Valerie.

This is where the whole “free market” sermon gets funny. Apparently markets are sacred right up until a billionaire needs your water, your electric grid, a tax break, and permission to park diesel generators next to your house. Then suddenly socialism is fantastic, provided the socialism flows upward. Build the AI centers if they make sense. Just stop asking ordinary people to subsidize the infrastructure, pollution, and risk while somebody else keeps the profit.
