Our dear leader once said " I love the poorly educated " He is well aware of the importance of an educated populace. He knows how easy it is to brainwash people who don't understand politics, economics and a functional society , in otherwords "civics" Education can be acquired by self taught methods ie reading books, watching documentaries, but is not optimal. Structured curriculum leads to increased knowledge and understanding of how the government and society operates. It is the best way to teach students.,MAGA wants uneducated sheep to lead to their own demise from inflated ego, ignorance, delusion of superiority and stupidity
I well remember that comment, "I love the poorly educated" Give him credit for saying right out loud. I assume that the people he was speaking to do not consider themselves in that category, or if they do, maybe it is something they are proud of? Many people do seem eschew science, and even consider that a badge of honor. What I have difficulty with is the belief of some people that the earth is only 5000 years old.
Thom, you should write a separate article about the GOP agenda to take money from public schools in order to indoctrinate students in parochial schools with their theocracy agenda. Teachig students the evil of LGBTQ, abortion, compassion in dying, no vault divorce and the desire to have prayers in schools and public facilities, etc. It has been the aim of the Vatican and conservative Catholics to enable parents to afford to send their children to Catholic schools.
This is an attack on the separation of church and state.
As an attorney I have encountered this religious agenda several times in cases that I have been involved with. Catholic lawyers seek out Catholic judges to pursue their objectives. Most private schools are Catholic Parochial schools and mostly benefit from this anti public school agenda.
I welcome talking to you about my experience and would share the experience of Americans United for the Separation of Church and State.
Mr. Gamm, it always makes me grin when I hear Protestant, Evangelist preachers bloviate about the evils of public education. They push for public funding of religious schools. These fools have no understanding of how potentially powerful the Catholic Church is. It is the largest church in the country, and largest Christian sect in the world. Those evangelists have no idea how the Catholic Church has badly mistreated people throughout history. They are blissfully unaware of the Grand Inquisitions conducted by the Catholic Church. Nor are they aware of how the Catholic church viciously suppressed competing churches and especially recusants. To those who say "This could never happen again." I say look around you at the things we did not think were possible in this country just several short decades ago; in politics, education and medicine.
"Last night, President Trump ordered the deployment of 2,000 National Guard troops in Los Angeles, using the excuse of protests against his immigration raids.
Let me be totally clear about what is happening here.
We have been working closely with law enforcement. There is no unmet need. The President is attempting to inflame passions and provoke a response.
He would like nothing more than for this provocative show of force -- and Pete Hegseth's absurd threat to deploy United States Marines on American soil – to escalate tensions and incite violence.
These are not people who have some deep conviction about protecting law enforcement. This is a President who failed to call up the National Guard when it was actually needed -- on January 6th -- and then pardoned the participants as one of his first acts as president.
They want a spectacle. They want the violence.
They think this is good for them politically.
That is why White House aides were posting pictures of Trump getting popcorn last night.
This is not the way a civilized country behaves. It is completely deranged behavior.
To the people of Los Angeles and across the country who are protesting these immigration raids:
Don't give them the spectacle they want. Never use violence. Speak out peacefully and in large numbers.
I know many of you have been watching the news about this, so I thought it important to reach out.
Trump's vulnerablility is defeat of his legislatiove agenda, i.e. the Big Beautiful bill. Makes you forget his tarriff BS. Makes you forget the theft. Makes you forget the Musk/Trump dichotopmy. Makes you forget the cards played by Zelinsky last week. Makes you forget the accusations about grift. Makes you forget he's Putin's whore. Makes you forget he's nutsy koo koo.
Providing meat to his base and to firm up his legislative support.
Yes Mr. Solomon, it is certainly part of the Trump misdirection of public attention away from what really matters to him and his billionaire friends: Money, wealth, power. The economic issues are the "real" issues as far as they are concerned. These other "cultural" issues are a smoke screen. However, the blind-with-hatred followers of the MAGAT crowd do indeed care about these smoke-screen issues. And the fact is, in the process, those MAGATs are helping Trump turn us into another Hungary. Legislative defeat of that "Big Beautiful Bill" is, right now, the most important effort.
Where I live, immigration is important because we have 3 Republican Cuban American House members who represent majority Dems. 50% of the population is Hispanic. Here's the news today. A Miami Republican who co-founded the group Latinas for Trump is condemning President Donald Trump’s mass-deportation campaign and blasting recent immigration enforcement actions as harmful. “This is not what we voted for,” State Sen. Ileana Garcia said in a statement on Saturday. “I have always supported Trump, through thick and thin. However, this is unacceptable and inhumane.”
A feeble education is still my best hypothesis rather than outright elimination of public schools. There is ample evidence that public education is failing. However, I am not so sure that the Heritage types want to eliminate public education as much as to use it to politically groom and indenture the masses. Give the masses just enough training to "load their 16 Tons." Just avoid teaching both critical reasoning skills and household financial management in K through 12
The Trump administration is now actively promoting NOT attending college. They imply it is a waste of time and money. This is total bullshit, but there is abundant evidence that most Americans do not have functioning bullshit detectors. This administration lies all day every day and the MAGA-majority swallow it as dogma.
Household financial management is not taught in the vast majority of public high schools. The proof of that gap in HS curriculum is that half of all Americans live paycheck to paycheck (P2P), lack enough savings to cover a $1,000 emergency, have little or no money invested for old age, etc. It truly is epidemic, and it is not by accident. Neither is the fact that over half the wealth in America is owned by the top .05 percentile of its citizens - people like the president and most of his cabinet who want to eliminate the Education Department.
I have heard some liberals blame all this P2P living on low wages rather than an education system failure. I might buy that, except that I put myself through 10 years of university education, living on a sub-poverty-line income. I was just willing to forego self-indulgent spending, and still had a happy campus life, eventually ending up wealthy thanks to my university education.
These schools outperform high priced prep schools. We have programs like the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme. A rigorous, two-year pre-university curriculum offered by high schools worldwide. It aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable, and confident students with a global perspective. IB students take a diverse range of subjects, including languages, sciences, math, and the arts, and complete a core curriculum of Theory of Knowledge, Creativity, Activity, Service, and an Extended Essay. Administered by the International Baccalaureate (IB), the IBDP is taught in schools in over 140 countries, in one of five languages: Chinese, English, French, German, or Spanish. To offer the IB diploma, schools must be certified as an IB school.
In the 1973 movie, Sleeper, Woody Allen, parodying a dystopic future of the United States depicted the misadventures of the owner of a health food store who is cryogenically frozen in 1973 and defrosted 200 years later into an ineptly led police state.
After the fall, the protagonist is asked how it happened? He says because a man named Alvin Shanker took over public education.
As head of the United Federation of Teachers, Shanker led union activities that included a nearly two-month-long teacher's strike that shut down almost all of the schools in New York, in 1968
The strike was a particularly explosive issue, because it was related to issues of race (tensions between Jewish teachers and black parents and administrators).
In the '70's my brother and I represented a school district that had an illegal strike before public employees in Pennsylvania had the right to strike.
We were on all sides on this issue and eventually my brother reprsented the AFT in many counties -- and represented school districts when he didn't have a conflict of interests.
.....
IMHO the greatest thing that ever happened to public education was the LBJ education acts, the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) and the Higher Education Act (HEA), and later the Handicap Act of 1973, which has morphed into Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), which was originally enacted in 1975 as the Education for All Handicapped Children Act (EAHCA).
I've been through attacks on public education most of my life, but I now feel there is no magic to local control of school boards. In my experience, politics and corruption becomes primary and education is secondary at the local level to a greater extent than nationally. Party spoils systems and nepotism were the rule. I had friends and clients who were state auditors and prosecutors who will could substantiate this.
We represented and were involved when the Amish bought part of a school districted after Wisconsin v Yoder, so that Amish kids would not be exposed to public education. The teachers in their one room schools are mostly 13-year-old girls....
We survived board meetings when we had to withstand attacks -- accused of atheism -- or agents of the Devil.
We survived attacks by the Nixon/Ford administration to use racism to split the old FDR coalition. We survived “massive resistance” to integration.
Maybe we should have a strengthened Department of Education. Maybe there should be national involvement in lesson plans, and other contentious issues
Thom, I hope you read these comments. I am writing about a different article that you wrote yesterday or the day before that I saw on AlterNet and MSN news, titled "John Roberts has a lot to answer for". Plus, Roberts' wife. Conflicts? "A Boston attorney and former colleague of U.S. Chief Justice John Roberts' wife, Jane, has filed a complaint with Congress and the Justice Department alleging her work as a legal recruiter poses a conflict of interest at the Supreme Court.
"The confidential complaint, first obtained and reported by The New York Times on Tuesday, suggests Jane Roberts' past position as legal recruiter -- helping high-profile firms hire top talent, some of whom later have business before the court -- may present an ethical concern.
"While she quit her job as a law partner when her husband was confirmed as chief justice in 2005, Jane Roberts made millions of dollars in commissions helping recruit for firms regularly involved in court business, according to the former colleague, Kendal Price, as reported by the Times.
'"I do believe that litigants in U.S. courts, and especially the Supreme Court, deserve to know if their judges' households are receiving six-figure payments from the law firms,' Price wrote, according to the Times."

As someone who worked in educational accountabilty for 30 years, money is the main motive. Pompeo preached to his choir. Contrasting viewpoints are out there for those who care to seek them.
Their elected representatives are the ones who refuse. Vouchers appeal to voters who feel they know more than educators. More educated voters know better.
Captain, my Captain how right you are again. We, understand exactly what they want to do to our public schools. No better time than now to do something. A lot of good smart people got through the public school system just fine. Thank you my Captain for this. Privatize we know who that helps. I believe we should learn about all different people and cultures in order to end the ignorance and the dumbing down of education in the first place. I think kids can figure all this stuff out for themselves. Insightful reading Captain my Captain, always is too.
What education is designed to do, in addition providing the basic skills to live in the world is to develop an intellect with the ability to decipher what is truth, and what is BS. Without this skill, the truth detector doesn't work and one becomes vulnerable to manipulation. The democracy as emphasized in this piece absolutely depends upon a citizenry able to have this skill. There was also a time when civics was not taken for granted. We are paying the price for that now. We took our democracy for granted, and are now scrambling to try and save it, and its continuance is by no means guaranteed.
A perfect example of what we are seeing now is best illustrated by the last book in Chronicles of Narnia series, "The Last Battle", where a greedy ape, Shift continuously gas lights the naive donkey, Puzzle. We see this everyday with Trump's inner circle. We see it EVERY SINGLE DAY in the press conferences by Karoline Leavitt, who twists negative developments, overeach, or the shredding our our democratic instituions into some kind brilliant accomplishment by Trump and his administration.
And the funny things about being a well educated, well rounded person, is that in most matters you would not skew too liberal, or too conservative, you would land right in the middle.
I have a lot of experience in business. There is an old saying: “The quality of a decision can never rise above the quality of information on which it is based.” As our founders knew, an educated citizenry is essential to democracy. Contrast that with a couple of other opinions about public education. Donald Trump: “I love the uneducated!” Adolph Hitler: “An educated person is a potential future enemy!” If you don’t know civics-how the government/democracy is supposed to operate (laws, rules, the Constitution), how will you know when it is being abused? How will you tell the difference between democracy and fascism?
As Donald Trump said in an
interview in 1999, when asked about someday running for President, “if I run, I’ll run as a Republican. Their voters are stupid. They believe anything they hear on Fox News. I’d lie and they’d eat it up. My numbers would be tremendous!” Prophetic and pathetic.
Years ago, in a source I no longer remember, I read about a long-range John Birch Society plan, concocted in the 1950’s to take over school boards and eliminate art, music, physical education and civics. Art and music because they help form critical and creative thinking skills, PE because it teaches kids how to take care of their bodies and civics because it informs students how and why our government works. A populace of lazy couch potatoes who can’t think critically or creatively and doesn’t have a clue how government works makes fascism almost inevitable.
I’ve have recently tried to find that source and failed. I’d be interested in knowing if this is something you may be able to validate or repudiate. Thank you for your tireless efforts to save our country.
Our dear leader once said " I love the poorly educated " He is well aware of the importance of an educated populace. If we can get those 3 to oppose the Big Beautiful bill, we might be able to stop all this stuff.
However, nationally Republicans can give a shit. We need the Republicans opposed to tariffs, Ukraine policy, grift, national security policy, etc.
We need Murkowski, Collins et al to stop it.

As someone who worked in educational accountabilty for 30 years, money is the main motive. Pompeo preached to his choir. Contrasting viewpoints are out there for those who care to seek them.
In many places taxpayers refuse to fund public education.
