Everything is burning at the moment. An inferno of corruption and cronyism are consuming any possibility of civil society. We scratch ourselves, yawn, and grumble at the toxic news radiating out from our media devices. Onward we say. Too many fires to put out. Someone else will fix it.

As Thom very clearly lays out, once precedent is set, it's done - or as we like to say, "history".

Whether or not the prosecution of Trump and the total decimation of his criminal network comes to pass - it is THE litmus test for the future of democracy across the globe. This fire we must put out first. Thoroughly. Everything else is meaningless in the face of it.

Donald J Trump, brought to meaningful and message-sending justice - or nothing.

It's a mind blowing list of in-your-face crimes; most of them were enabled by the Republican Party. They had chance after chance to reclaim their party and instead chose to double down for the money. Oh there are a few believers among Trump's congressional cult, but most of them have just made their pact with the devil to keep their power and to use his base. They don't give a damn about those people.

Their track record shows the Republicans of the last fifty years are drawn to leaders with no integrity and little empathy. They seem to think Trump worked out well for their interests even though he's bat-shit crazy. It is not rational to think he will continue to do all the things they want. No one can depend on him for A-N-Y-T-H-I-N-G. What he would do or who he would screw in another term is unknown. It's impossible to define the relationship he has with his politicians and followers, because he is a lunatic. If they feel something, he certainly does not. They are just objects in his world to use and abuse.

Looking at what Putin is doing to the world right now may be a glimpse of Trump 2.0. Are Putin and Moscow Mitch thinking they will be running the show then?

Kamala Harris's strength is being wasted as VP. Merritt Garland doesn't have what it takes for the job at hand. He should resign as AG, Harris should resign as VP in order to become Attorney General and prosecute Trump and all insurrectionists. I'd love to see Oprah become Vice President. It's possible she could bring sanity out of this chaos with her own brand of fireside chats. In the mean time we should all be referring to what's being said by these Republicans as not just disinformation but as DELIBERATE disinformation which is playing an essential role in the takedown of our Republic.

read Gansters of Capitalism by Jonathan Katz. This almost happened to F.D.R. If not for Smedley Butler an honest Man, Marine and Whistleblower.

The Republican party knows there is no way for them to be a party for the people. Measures have been taken over the past forty years to ensure the Republican party will never need to worry about losing an election. They have reached a point where supporting the general population of our country is no longer going to be an issue. I suspect both parties supported plans for reaching a point when the popular vote would no longer matter. Now, the two parties only need to find a president both sides can support while eliminating the popular vote permanently.
