"National security" has become the blanket excuse for every curtailing of rights and every human atrocity. It's not our security that government leaders are concerned with; in fact, it is our security that is being violently threatened. It is THEIR personal INsecurity--their fear and hatred of anybody who is ethnically, sexually, religiously, or politically different--that they view as terrorism.
"Amen," you are so correct. What is going on in this country needs to stop. If anybody needs a jail cell, it's Trump and his ass-kissing thugs. All of his cabinet can join him as well; one is as bad as the other. When I look at Trump, all I see is white trash prancing like the king he thinks he is. We need him out of the Oval Office before he destroys this country any further.
Invoking Kafka, brilliant. For all the innocent men and women who have most unfortunately fallen into this nightmare, it’s indeed ‘Kafkaesque.’
My favorite novel by my favorite author is ‘Bend Sinister.’ Its protagonist, Adam Krug, a most respected professor in the fictional country of “Padukland,” has had his son kidnapped, held for the ransom of publicly supporting the corrupt and fascist government. An incredibly powerful story. Nabokov had direct experience with Stalin and Hitler, finally finding peace and a home in America. Born in Russia, writing extensively in Russian and French, we were the beneficiaries of his settling into English for his later and best novels, which include ‘Bend Sinister’ and ‘Invitation To a Beheading.’ Both deal with the absurdity and evil of governments doing exactly what ours is doing now. For a man born in Russia, he mastered the English language better than any other writer of that era. Obviously, I highly recommend reading this particular book - ‘Bend Sinister.’
We’re pinning all our hopes on the upcoming midterms. The energy right now is inspiring. It feels as if many politicians are taking cues from the fantastic successes of Mamdani - the smart move. We may be entering an era of social change, a truly progressive age.
I am most hopeful.
I also hope they’re reading ‘The Hartmann Report!’
Thom does have some of the smartest listeners and commentators, like he points out periodically. I do not consider myself in that category but I am (humbly) continuing to learn. A Winston Churchill quote (?); “A mind is like a parachute. It functions better when it’s open.” Thank you Michael !
I have no doubt of a massive Blue Wave this November. What has me worried is what will happen after - this fascist regime's reaction. I was alarmed by tRump's telling everyone at that strange "convention" to get out there and "cheat like hell," sounding exactly as he did on Jan. 6, 2021.
They have removed almost all the guardrails, and hegseth has fired anyone who may have objected to the efforts to use the US Military against its own citzens.
They most definitely will NOT go quietly "into that night."
So, of course, I HOPE - hope that system holds tight, and rolls along - that our "Better Angels" take HOLD as well.
It appears that only the worst of the die hard maga faithful still support this insanity.
It is good for Thom to remind us of how far Trump has taken America into fascism.
We are so overwhelmed with government highjinnx, incompetence, and overreach every day that what our ICE Gestapo is doing daily is rather well hidden from MSM attention. Our MSM itself is so frightened of fascism that they no longer help readers and viewers see clearly what is going on in their world. We have seen Trump weaponize our government against both Colbert and Kimmel, and we have watched 60 Minutes willingly succumb to political censorship.
Here in fascist Florida, our illegal jungle immigrant torture chamber and concentration camp has finally been closed down. It clearly violated international law while operating. Nevertheless, politically, it imparted bragging rights to fascist Governor DeSantis. Floridians have also seen fascism purge all state universities of liberal freedoms, replacing all boards with fascist-friendly members. Fascism has already trickled down to Florida grammar schools too, as texts have been revised to make slavery seem like a minority job training program, and the Civil War was not much worse than January 6th - just a political disagreement with a little violence, subsequently erased by mass pardons by our Führer. Journalists are not openly speculating that the pardoned Jan 6th militia will likely be back to prevent a loss of control of both houses of Congress should Trump's other efforts to undermine a fair vote fail in the courts.
Forget the Florida Man stuff. “Mom’s for Liberty” was started by 3 Florida women and were involved in some of the school curriculum revisionist history you touched on, particularly in Florida, amongst other MAGA-esque garbage. Certainly approved by our Gov. Death-Sentence ! Maybe this state will go purple or even blue because some are waking up. (before it’s too late). Enjoy those sunrises and/or sunsets wherever you be !!
We do have an abundance of evangelicals who preach Old Testament morality. Some people just have to feel superior to others to garner self-esteem. Those ladies likely proudly display their Trump New Testament Bibles, but I doubt that they ever read about the Sermon on the Mount.
The fake Christian MAGA can’t handle the James Talarico’s or John Fugelsang’s book “The Seperation of Church and Hate.” John has another one just out called “Fake Christians”. I think greeting the stranger with razor wire on the Texas side of the Rio Grande (Hot Wheels Gov. Abbott), isn’t in Jesus’s playbook at all !! Cruel & heartless they be !!
If you can afford to move north, a much less humid and at least substantially less fascist climate awaits you. Here in Pittsburgh we actually elected one conservative democrat mayor and a progressive social democrat woman! County Executive. 'Course on a statewide level we have the Quisling John Fetterman and the Vulture Capitalist Stooge Dave McCormick. But hey, we don't have dog eating alligators and we do have pierogis.
We did not retire from DC to Florida by accident. Thing is, as retirees, we are insulated from DeSantis's fascist regime. There are two classes in Florida: The upper class (wealthy 2nd homers and retirees) and everybody else - mostly service providers. As more retirees immigrate, Florida (even the infamous Villages) is getting purpler because those folks have college backgrounds and moved from big cities.
If I had kids and worked here, I would send them north to private boarding schools and prep schools to ensure they got educated.
BTW, we live on the barrier islands. We have no alligators or pythons due to the brackish water between us and the mainland. We have no mosquitoes either because the ocean breeze is too strong for them to fly. That same breeze also makes it, on average, 5 degrees cooler in summer and 5 degrees warmer in winter (Gulf Stream). The drive all the way across the causeways also reduces burglaries and other crimes - criminals are, by nature, lazy. Best of all is we do not own a snow shovel.
Sounds idyllic. I'm a retired clinical social worker/therapist who chose to leave a lucrative private practice to live and work among the poor in a part of WV where the poverty is punctuated by a weekend influx of wealthy second home owners. So my retirement only afforded me a single home in a nice but not terribly affluent neighborhood. Good thing the kids have all finished college and grad school and are successful in their chosen professions, even though they had the apparent misfortune of attending public schools and in the case of 1 of the three of them a public university, which is where I put in my eight years of undergraduate and graduate work. We make our choices and have what we have. We don't have coyotes or alligators, and we do have some traffic during commuting hours. But we have world class medical care, a number of good and a couple of great Universities, a lively arts and music scene as well as three pro sports franchises.
I was a Fed my entire career (retired Navy officer, then NIH science official). The pay was way below market. But due to frequent relocations, I started buying fixer-uppers, and that always turned a reinvested profit. So, I still wound up in Happilyeverafter on the beach despite my limited income. Of course, my income likely was higher than what you experienced. But what matters is not wealth but legacy, and you have a truckload, I'm sure.
What a kind and wise eye you have. Not to mention what sounds like well earned good fortune. Go, NIH. Truth be told, at this point my inner life is so rich and lively that it doesn't much matter to me where I live. I have my house, my garden, a loving spouse and family. Plus a damn good library a well stocked supermarket just down the hill and a UU church with a fireball of a sermonizer to stir things up of a Sunday. Not to mention the green rolling hills that I love all around. Not to be snarky (which I admit to enjoying on occasion) but the last time I was on a tropical beach was on Eleuthera, where the sand was blush pink and the no-see-ums were a Pharaonic Plague. May your beaches be ever so much better and DeSantis disappear down a sinkhole. Peace, my brother.
The total White population in the United States is about 213–214 million (white alone) or about 191–196 million (white non‑Hispanic) depending on which official Census category you choose.
The total BRICS pop.?
The expanded BRICS includes: Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Indonesia.
From the most recent UN‑based 2026 population table:

Kafka’s The Trial has always haunted me. Months ago, my oldest son returned from Europe, and Border Patrol officers detained him at the airport for five hours without explanation. They seized his phone and searched the phone’s contents. When he requested an explanation, he was advised only that the reason was on a “need-to-know basis” and claimed no duty to disclose to him the basis for detention.
Your article immediately recalled that terrifying encounter. Thank you, Thom, for reminding us that Due Process is critical in democratic systems.
You wrote: "When a government stops honoring the rule of law, due process, and fundamental human rights it cease to be a legitimate republic and has demonstrably slid into the early stages of being reinvented as a full-blown fascist state."
Amen. The rule of law, which has very unfortunately become a hackneyed phrase almost devoid of meaning to most people, is an achievement which took centuries to establish. And the law itself--the very notion of law as a means to establish justice--is one of the crowning achievements of humanity. It's as imperfect and as evolving as we are ourselves, of course, which means we owe it ourselves to defend it.
Your dad was so right. The price of liberty is eternal vigilance.
Thank you Thom for bringing us essential Truths that we so need to 'hear' and act upon. I want to thank you so much for printing your posts as I am primarily a visual/kinesthetic learner and my least preferred sensory modality in understanding complex subjects is auditory. I'm so grateful for your info, your lifelong work, your beautiful moral values and for your substack here.
The thing about Kafka is that the horror was never just the secret file. It was the normalization of the secret file. Once “you can’t see the evidence” starts sounding like an acceptable feature instead of a constitutional fire alarm, the bureaucracy has already learned the trick authoritarianism loves most: make the outrageous feel procedural.
This war on immigrants by the right wing is especially ironic., because by and large these immigrants are cultural conservatives, and once naturalized they vote culturally conservative. certainly did so last election. Case in point Mayra Flores Tex 34, herself a naturalized former borer hopper is not only extreme right wing, but anti immigrant.
And I can't help but wonder will Trump grant waivers and pardons to the likes of Ramaswamy, Patel, Haley, Jindahl, et all and all South Asians who are citizens simply because their parents were here when they were born.
My mum & I did a tour of East Berlin in 1964. Bricked up windows. Melted tar with broken glass on top of walls, Nobody on the streets. When we passed thru Checkpoint Charlie the entire bus breathed a high sigh of relief
From 1870 to 1900(or 2016 to 2026) there were powerful industrialists and financiers(technocrats and crypto) who built massive fortunes using ruthless, monopolistic, and often unethical business tactics. It was the age of the robber barons who dictated to politicians what they needed to pursue advancing their wealth to the detriment of the average citizen. JP Morgan, Rockefeller, Carnegie, and Vanderbilt(aka Bezos, Huang, Altman, Buterin, Musk) were the major players. It was the Gilded Age complete with high protective tariffs(aka 50% Canadian tariffs among many others) to fund the government(21st century secondary tax system) before the time of income taxes and JIm Crow with disregard for native Americans in Western expansion(21st version of immigrant deportation).
Historians often label the presidents as "forgettable" or "weak" because real political power resided heavily in Congress(21st century power resided in the lower judiciary) and political machines(21st century fascist MAGA Republicans)rather than the White House. McKinley/Cheeto at the end of the age presided over the Spanish American war(Venezula and Iran) in a brief 1898 conflict between the United States and Spain that ended Spain's colonial empire and established the U.S. as a global power(21st century wanna be dictator).
The end of the Gilded Age began when WE the People began the Progressive Era(1900 -1920) which saw the rise of intense social and political reform.

I thought I deleted it. It was the correct number and I apologize.

Astonishing how we have descended into a Kafkaesque police state, while millions go about their business saying "they won't come for me!"
Oh, yes, they will!
