Those familiar with my comments know that I have been vigorous in defending Israel from the libelous charge of genocide, but what I say next will brand me, by some, as an antisemite. A word I dispute and would like to discuss)
The Zionists in Israel, supported by Christian Zionists in the U.S. are in the process of violently dispossessing their Arab and Bedouin neighbors in the west bank and doing the same in south Lebanon.
This is atrocious and cannot be allowed to stand, but apparently the world is intimidated into silence because of the charge of antisemitism and the holocaust.
This is how the past controls the future, it is also ignored to control the present.
Every citizen, every occupant, of the United States, except native Americans lives on and enjoys stolen land, but that is also true of Britain and Europe, even South Africa, where the original inhabitants the Khoisan, were displaced violently by the Bantu.
In England, the Celts displaced most of the Brythonic peoples, who in turn were ethnically cleansed by the Anglo Saxons and Jutes, who in turn were displaced by the Normans
It is the history of the world, the difference is that there has been a shift in values and attitudes in some, to the point where in some the behavior is unacceptable, but in others it is condoned if not lauded.
Greed, power, the need for safety and security justified by ideology, and religion is an ideology, a sectarian one.
There is no salvation or redemption of the human condition, we are condemned to eternal conflict and oppression.
The past is both used and ignored to justify the present. Putin uses a mythical and manufactured history to justify the war on Ukraine, Americans ignore their history to justify their lifestyle.
Both Jew and Muslim Arab justify their behavior and position by recourse to a mythical and manufactured history.
William great post.To repeat myself yesterday we did a mini-pre 3/28 rally in Marietta,Georgia. We got a little support, but more than a few thumbs down and middle finger responses. I'm afraid that the US religion : Nazism: has more supporters than we are aware of. Appparently southerners in particular see " Trump,HItler,Mussolini,Orban,Putin,as accomplishing something the confederates never did. Always trying to relitigate the Civil War,it just never ends. I can only hope these less than human pieces of flesh will pay a price.
Sadly. I agree. But not all southerners agree with the MAGA world view, but enough to,to strike a generalization. Same with rural America. The paradox is the lesser the number of minorities the more bigoted the community.Notice I said minorities, not race.
A good example, the transgender are the most notable minority, because of their lack of representation, but they are of the highest priority as regards disgust, bigotry, misinformation.
When a category emerges that has even fewer people, be sure that will arouse the greatest of fear and bigotry.
I read something about some small midwest town that never saw a black person, except on TV and the entire town had racist views, and thought that blacks were a threat to their lives
Sadly this is true. My husband grew up in 1950-60's small town South Dakota. He never saw a black person until he went to college in Lincoln Nebraska. In SD it was the Natives that were 'the problem'.
In the south many liberals consititute a "concurrent mjority" in places like Hotlanta, Charlotte, Charleston, S.C. I held hearings throughout the south. Public opinion is not uniform.
The least common denominator, these days, is religion. Someone like Andy Beshear comes from the same background as all the neo confederates, but is able to break through, in part using religious language and imagery.
People in my. home area of Pennsyltucky can be just as racist and beligerant as many in the south. Appalacia runs from Alabama into Canada. The culture is the same throughout.
I've visited some reservations, and appaled at the living conditions, the alcoholism, the crime, but that is because there is no opportunities, where they have casino's,and employ their own, things are quite different.
Take for example, inner city living, or as they called it the ghetto. Red lining, lack of jobs and discrimination that keeps people from moving out and up, create a society of hopelessness and desperation. No jobs, no upward opportunities, and you are creating conditions for crime, drug use and pushing, looting, shop lifting. Situations created by institutional and systemic discrimination, and then the societal response is to blame the people that they have discriminated against
All true...Then they build casinos which drags some further down the hole but does provide employment for many. I've seen totally depressed towns, still depressed but many Natives have bought the homes the whites left. Virtually no opportunities for anyone living there except in the casino.
I don't gamble, but I do stop and eat in a casion now and then, and I never saw a native American at a one armed bandit, a roulette wheel, crap table or playing black jack.
But I do no know this there are two peoples genetically predisposed to alcoholism, Celts and Native Americans it is genetic. I'm 82% Irish and am an alcoholic, haven't drank since 89, my father was one as well.
It is in genes,in particular th ADH1B and ALDH2
Interestingly while France and Italy consume a lot of wine, France, which is largely of Celtic (or Gallic) heritage has a higher rate of alcoholism than Italy
I know you don't believe me about anything, but if land is taken in Israel, courts handle the matter. This is a controversial subject and there is a lot of bullshit.
Google: In Israel, "just compensation" for real estate expropriation is legally mandated, typically based on market value, though it often leads to under-compensation or disputes, particularly regarding legal fees and planning restrictions. Over 90% of land is state-owned, with long-term leases, while 10,946 property damage claims were filed recently, mostly in Tel Aviv.

Key Aspects of Real Estate Compensation in Israel
Legal Basis: Expropriation of property rights for public use is governed by law, requiring compensation for the market value, notes this article from The Buchmann Faculty of Law.
Regulatory Takings: Section 197 of the Planning and Building Law allows for compensation if land value is reduced by a plan (not expropriation).
Expropriation Challenges: Compensation policies often fail to offer fully just compensation due to inconsistencies in assessing market value and specific property circumstances.
Types of Compensation: In cases of wartime damage (e.g., from rocket fire), property claims are filed for structural damage and broken equipment.
State Land Authority (ILA): The Wikipedia article on Israeli land and property laws notes that most land is managed by the ILA, and long-term leases (up to 99 years) are standard.
Wikipedia
Historical and Disputed Context
1948 Refugee Claims: Israel historically agreed to compensate Palestinian refugees for property abandoned in 1948, but restricted this to individual, not collective land, often linking payments to 1950s peace negotiations or counterclaims regarding Jewish property in Arab lands, as discussed in this article from the Institute for Palestine Studies.
1972 Plan: A 1972 initiative planned to compensate some Arabs for land lost in 1948 to counter claims of dispossession, according to this article from The New York Times.
Property Rights Challenges: Some legal analyses indicate that property disputes in Israel often result in, or fail to resolve, Palestinian dispossession, say The Conversation and the LPE Project.
Current Compensation Issues: Recent studies suggest that the current compensation system may not be fully "corrective" in its justice approach, say this article from The Buchmann Faculty of Law.
I knew a lawyer, an American, who brought many Arabs from Israel, the West Bank etc to Pennslyltucky, in some cases finding foundation money to make his clients whole.
I read Ha'aretz Daniel. And daily there are stories about settlers and the IDF, harassing, even killing Arabs and Bedouins to drive them off their land, so the settlers can come in and built Kibbutz and apartments.
Now, according to Ha'aretz, IDF is preparing the ground for settlers to move into southern Lebanon.
Plans like the 1972 plan, and jurisprudence evaporates in the hands of BB and his right wing supporters (the Likkud, Haredi parties Shas and United Torah Judaism (UTJ), along with the far-right Religious Zionism party, which includes factions like Otzma Yehudit.. These control Israel, the IDF, people like Ben Gzir are radical Zionist which want to expel all Arabs.
You quote google on laws, but law are of no effect, they are window dressing if the harmed have no recourse, and those forced off their land, those killed by settlers and IDF, have no recourse.
And who sits in judgement anyway?
Like I said, I read Ha'aretz.
Bottom line, here and there, the law is mere words on paper unless it is enforced.
Saying that there is a law for this or that, means absolutely nothing if it is not enforced.
Just as we tried to expunge the native Americans, and Argentina killed or pushed out the native population and the European immigrants to Australia tried to quash the natives who traveled by virtue of their ancestors "Song Lines". Culture means nothing to those who take over a land apply their more modern power, as the Scottish sheep herders denuded Easter Island whose natives crossed the Pacific Ocean from their South Pacific Islands in small handmade crafts. "When will they (we) ever learn. How many ears can one man have ...."
I don't think we have to accept that that is the way of man. Maybe wealth addiction and dark triad genes can be isolated and altered via a technology like CRISPR. There is probably a predisposition allele in a gene that is turned on by environmental factors, whether by climate, stress, or parental behavior toward the child.
We need to identify who has such an allele at birth and ensure they have an environment that is favorable to preventing the activation of the aggression, greed, or addiction allele.
I lived in VA in the mid 90's. My daughter went to a public middle school. They studied the Civil War in a history class. When the obvious result was the defeat of the South a 14yo cried because he had always been told the South had won the war. The same county refused to take the Confederate flag down from the court house. Sad and scary. There is a whole part of our country that are delusional. And armed to the hilt.
Judi,at that time they actually studied the civil war,not sure they still do. The one piece of history especially lacking in the south is the history of Nazi Germany 1934-41.Whe I ask people if they know, they look@me with a blank face. When I ask if they know the definition of a " Nazi" they have no idea. Yesterday a few of us did a mini rally pre 3/28 NO Kings,I was surprised of the # of thumbs down, giving the middle finger that occurred.
The one area Thom has not covered is how many "Nazi supporters" there are in the country. The rise of " Neo Nazi" groups is @ an all time high.
It seems like the new religion is "Nazism" ,this is scary.
All this propaganda being taught in schools is due to the fact that the U.S. has never properly supported education. Citizens are unable to analyze false information and propaganda spread by politicians.
According to the National Literacy Institute, 21% of adults in the U.S. were illiterate in 2024. 54% of adults have a literacy below a 6th-grade level (20% are below 5th-grade level). Low levels of literacy costs the U.S. up to 2.2 trillion per year.
This is exactly what Donald Trump and his billionaire supporters want. Trump wants to turn the U.S. into his own dictatorship. The last thing he wants is a literate and educated public that is able to evaluate his anfd MAGA's lies and actions.
That is why he wants to finally eliminate the Department of Education. He is a traitor to Democracy. This is shown clearly by his acting against the Constitution of the United States.
Wow, there is a lot of calm, intelligent and respectful discussion today, I suppose because we all know how important this topic is. I think what it comes down to is that many people do not practice critical thinking about history (or science), and will not accept any facts that contradict their biases. They want confirmation, not questioning of their groups.
People defend what they identify with. And to them that justifies what they do. Native peoples may see "freedom fighters", but to colonial or repressive regimes these are "bandits", "Communists", or "terrorists", depending on the time and place. Violent responses are therefore appropriate. Add a lack of historical perspective and anything becomes justified. Today's Taliban may be tomorrow’s Maccabees, and there will be nobody around to contradict that. In England people like Francis Drake are national heroes. In Spain and its former colonies they are remembered as brutal pirates. History is littered with such examples, though Trump isn't even bothering with excuses for his actions.
I wish that I had a good conclusion to all this. Get the facts out while knowing that the majority of people are swayed more by emotion than logic, and try to reach those who will think. Maybe it takes the proverbial 2x4, like the economic disaster we're now facing, to get their attention, but some will open their eyes. And once people start thinking you cannot stop them from questioning what they see, so that gives us some hope.
A term I learned from the MAGAs, "grooming," seems like an apt term for what Thom described.
As a psychologist, I have always been fascinated by "late bloomers." These are people who were well into adulthood before they realized they were smarter than they thought, enrolled in college late, and started a new career path. In the Navy, we called prior-enlisted officers "mustangs," like horses not groomed from birth at the stables to be winners.
The tales late bloomers volunteered made clear that neighborhoods have a profound and lasting effect on people's self-image and worldview. They often heard from adults in the neighborhood assertions that working-class people were superior to college boys because "they worked for a living," and they were "honest" about the fact that Black people were inferior and Jews were sniveling crooks. In big cities, neighborhoods were also often dominated by a single ethnic group, like Germantown and Little Italy.
Neighborhood grooming was also powerful because most of the neighborhood stayed in the area as adults. That is often why voting districts are dominated by one party. You were far more likely to live away from the neighborhood if you went to college or joined the military - ergo the mustang phenomenon. I have friends who have lived into their 80s who still reside less than 10 miles from where they were born. If Trump fails, the entire neighborhood must be wrong. Surely he has a secret plan he is not sharing about Iran. Those libtards are traitors - lock em up! I don't want my daughter to marry a spic from some shithole country...
But Wiliam, must it always be so? Though we have spent the last year tearing ourselves apart, does it not now provide an opportunity to rebuild our own democracy, reaffirm our pledge to the Constitution upon which we were formed and which has been a beacon to others for 250 years.
Let’s start to share our thoughts about values and candidates with integrity and charisma needed to make it so?
Together it seems almost possible .
My thoughts and thanks to those headed to Washington on the “ Mothers March”.
But Wiliamson, must it be so? Just as we have spent the year tearing things apart, does this not give us the unique opportunity to rebuild something for ourselves and become an example for the rest?
