I also had major, work-related injuries eight years ago, and Kaiser has also been my Workers Compensation provider. When I retire, I am planning on signing up for Kaiser's version of Medicare Advantage, Senior Advantage, so that I can stay with my current providers, including the Workers Compensation providers for future medical needs. I can't fight a bad system by myself, and Kaiser Senior Advantage is also affordable for me.
About two years ago, the City of New York attempted to force all its public employee retirees onto a Medicare Advantage plan. If one did not choose the (Aetna) Advantage plan that the city was contracting with there would be prohibitive penalties (cost) if one choose to remain in traditional Medicare.
Before this came to my attention, I had no idea that when you enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan, you are taken off of Medicare. I am someone who reads contracts, agreements (yes even the “accept these terms” online, and instructions to new equipment), so I was shocked and humiliated with what little I really knew.
The pre-approval aspect should be the most damning and clearly exposes these companies for what they are: bottom line, profit obsessed, and by any means necessary. They are not in business in order to improve the health of the insured, but instead to pay out as little as possible with little concern or consideration of in any deleterious consequences.
Most people have not had to go through a pre-approval process, and therefore have not experienced the stress or consequences of a delay or denial. I was so pleased to discover that once on Medicare, I no longer had to wait for approval of tests and procedures, as recommended by my doctors. The advantage programs, when asked, assure that “health care” professionals make the decisions. Now, there are trials using private companies with AI to decide on approval.
As we watch the cheery commercials for the misnamed “Medicare” Advantage, listening to all the “extra” perks they provide, it certainly has its appeal. The fraud of it is stunning: what they promise today, becomes unavailable once you sign up, or shortly thereafter.
