— With Religious fascism on the rise… Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry’s law requiring the Ten Commandments be posted in every classroom from kindergarten to graduate school is just the latest in the efforts of a small but determined faction of mostly Catholic (but some evangelical) power brokers trying to end the separation of church and state. Their goal is nothing less than a theocratic takeover of the US government, and between now-billionaire Leonard Leo’s efforts and the recent rulings by six Catholics on the Supreme Court mandating states “must” fund religious schools, may allow coercive prayer at school-sponsored sporting events, and ending the right of abortion in America. My colleague Dean Obeidallah does a deep dive into what he calls the “fascist” agenda of these so-called Christians in his excellent Dean’s Report Substack newsletter.
— Is it a “break glass” moment with Judge Cannon? The judge who’d only presided over four trials in her life when she was suddenly elevated to a lifetime federal judgeship by Leonard Leo and Donald Trump has been making decisions in the Trump espionage case in Florida that evince either rank incompetence or actual malice against Jack Smith and his team. Yesterday and Monday she’s hearing a constitutional issue in her court, as if she were a member of the US Supreme Court. It’s totally bizarre that she’d do this, but if you consider the possibility that Trump has promised her a seat on the Supreme Court if she can blow up his Florida case, it suddenly all makes sense, including her current “rehearsal” for hearing constitutional cases once she’s on the nation’s highest court.
— The Supreme Court has already helped Trump beat his federal rap for trying to overthrow our country and steal the 2020 election. They did this by delaying their decision in his petition for absolute immunity from prosecution for crimes he committed while still president. No matter how they rule, every day that goes by means it’s less and less likely Trump will end up being prosecuted. All we’re waiting for
