The psychology that enabled medical costs to skyrocket is the myth of US capitalism. Specifically, the notion that the more you pay for something, the higher its quality is. That is also further bolstered by labeling universal healthcare as worthless communism. Politicians would suggest that with socialized medicine, you could die in the waiting room before seeing a medic.
The AMA fought universal healthcare because doctors loved being the richest guys in town. AMA support started eroding as the cost of running a "doctor's office" started growing along with the time demands to keep the books and process insurance claims. Doctors started opting to join group practices, then entire corporate-sized practices that include hospitals and clinics. Their administrative costs jacked up fees. So, today, you can die in the waiting room before seeing a medic.
Excellent disclosure of the Insurance industry's early attempt to undermine universal government medical insurance through false claims. Will you cover how the insurance industry recently did the same, spreading false information about the Canadian system, as Hoffman did about the German system?
Here is how vapid Americans are. She died last April from Lung Cancer that metastasized to her gall bladder, Socialism (Medicare) covered 80% of her medical costs, she was a divorcee and had no 2ndary, and could only pay a minimum of $35 a month to cover the 20%,
Knowing that they would come after her estate, which amounted to her home, mortgage free, she transferred title to her beloved grandson..
She was a Trumper, and we stopped talking for years, she would rant and rail against socialialism, even as she drew medicare. She said that a Facebook friend from England, btiched about the long wait times to see a doctor. Idiot
That situation occurs in America you have to make an appointment to see a physician, I have a primary care physician and he has other clients and has to see them by appointment.
If you need urgent care, you can always show up at the emergency room, Granted in large cities they are usually swamped. I live rural and am seen almost as soon as I walk through the door, if carried in on a gurney it would be faster.
She also claimed that she was against socialism as she read all of Taylor Caldwell's books, of that I can't testify because I have read none.
As regards Facebook, it is dominated by cranks and bots.
Peripherally, there three ways to treat cancer, Chemotherapyh,Immunotherapy andChemo with surgery.
If you test postive for the protein PDL-1, as I and my sister did, you are eligible for Immunotherapy.
Immunotherapy is like chemo in that it is an infuision and they hang a bag, but there are no side effects, like hair less, and instead of killing cells, it boost the immuno system
There are two brands of Immunotherapy, Keytruda and Opdivo. Keytruda was what kept Jimmy Carter Alive for 10 years, and me alive for 9 years now.
My sister was on Opdivo, I checked it out as compared to Keytruda, a different chemical compound and not as efficacious, I urged my sister to have her doctor switch. The doctor, who probably received a bonus or gift from Bristol Myers Squibb.
The scandal that no one talks about is that physicians are given gifts in return for writing scripts
Not only was Opdivo not efficacious, but her cancer metastasized to her gall bladder and endocrine system, and by the time it was discovered, it was too late, she died wearing a colostomy bag
Typical of a malignant narcissist Cheeto cares little for his fellow human beings and actually takes pleasure in inflicting pain on people, whether they are his “friends”…he turns on them on a dime….or enemies.
He belongs in jail with his counterpart Netanyahu. And let's not forget Kegseth. Cheeto and Kegseth should both be tried in the International Criminal Court(ICC) for supporting Israel in their reign of genocidal terror as well as for the boat strikes in international waters. This is probably why the US has never been supportive of the ICC because of their own pugilistic style of international relations.
We’ll see how long Netanyahu can keep his finger off the trigger. Like Cheeto he would go back on the ceasefire if he felt it would be to his advantage. An evil axis of two, supported by a dry drunk.

The grifter so-called conservatives continue to undermine and steel from non-profit programs that worked. The latest is their gift to the insurance industry's Medicare Advatange, which takes money from traditional Medicare and allows those industries to regulate, deny coverage and profit from everything they do. No one is regulating them and they continue to steal from the best government programs that have served the entire population. Their excessive, expensise and perfistent advertisements on TV, the Internet, email and more are eveidence of what they are all about, profiting off of our nation's healthcare suffering. We need reform sooner than later to recover a balanced program of Universal Healthcare, like other nations have!
I absolutely love Thom's historical exposes. This is history that most of us would never know about without these stories. His book about the origins of the idea that "corporations have the same rights as people", the result of an opinion by a court clerk in 1886, which led eventually to Bellotti and Citizens United, was a major eye opener.
Of all the podcasts and newletters and media subscriptions I pay for, this one is the one that is worth the most. Thank you, Thom.
I am now 89 and on regular Medicare. I rarely have to pay for anything. I graduated from High School in 1955. I worked in an office for $50 a week. If I needed to visit a doctor I could pay for it and if I needed a prescription I could pay for it. Medicine has gotten so costly I doubt if I could do that on $500 a week now. I wonder if Medical Health Insurance has affected that in any way. You would suppose they would wish to keep costs down. I am not really sure what caused medical costs to rise so far in my lifetime. We had health insurance when my husband died of glioblastoma but our savings account was wiped out by the time he died.

Former insurance executive Wendell Potter was the Hoffman equivalent. After the Canadian healthcare system's response to the COVID crisis was far superior to the US, Potter had a crisis of conscience and came clean. I don't think the press reported the superior Canadian COVID results or the extensive false claims about the Canadian system in general. You could NOT do it on $500 per week now. That is barely above the individual poverty line and well below the line for a family of four.
