Thank you Mr. Hartmann, this article is amazing and I would guess this information is unknown to most americans. I appreciate your research and all of your work as always.

Thom's interesting biography of Her Hoffmann is the American Dream. He not only went from poverty to wealth, but he also was a model citizen who contributed to national health promotion societies very much alive and influential today.

Was Hoffman a racist? Well, the statistics are in his favor if you ignore what behavioral scientists refer to as intervening variables. Hoffman's equation ignored low access to quality (if any) education, low access to jobs with middle-class wages, and low access to decent food, clothing, and housing with decent plumbing and low exposure to disease. Those factors would shorten the life expectancy of a member of any race.

So, was Hoffman a racist or just somebody who misconstrued the data because they ignored causal variables in American society, and/or mistakenly accepted a eugenic explanation rather than accept a social one due to society's history of abusing racial minorities? In either case, it manifested socially as racial discrimination.

I hope Hoffman's great-grandchildren are married to people of color or working for people of color. Love, proximity, and education can cure some of us.

Thanks for the history lesson, Thom. It's ugly and we need to face it. America might come together over health care, because our lack of it is killing us. See you in the streets.

Take away the obvious differences in skin color and hair, and there is no difference between those who are designated White and those who are not. Race is a made-up category to justify our invasion/exploitation/degradation of other peoples whose lands, labor, and resources we covet. There is nothing superior about being a thief.

There are some differences in transplant success rates across various ethnic groups due to their genetic pools, but that has nothing to do with anything about them as people. I agree with you about race, it is as made up as the Nazi distinctions of Jews and Aryans (a language group, incidentally).

I wonder what Hoffman would have made of the Japanese "race" if it turned out they tested with higher IQs or were more "industrious" than American and European whites. He probably would have called it the equivalent of "fake news" and ignored the implications. After all, that's how racism works. It is what those with nothing else will fall back on to give themselves pride.

If Americans survive climate change, but are still under Trump's (or his successor's) thumb, then white Americans' IQs will probably test lower

than most throughout the world.

I sent you a message about a virtual national town hall this Wednesday at 8:00 PM EDT. I hope you will restock it and spread the word. I hope you will attend too.

Racism is the reason there is opposition to SNAP, public education, and all other social programs, and if it was believed that only blacks benefit from bridges we wouldn't have them as well.

What to make of, what to do with a country, like that
