I didn't learn much from the book because I have read most of Hartmann's books and follow the daily reports and the podcasts. It's a good summary and would make a good gift to someone who has recently become aware that something horrible has gone wrong in the US and could use a Cliff Notes kind of way to catch up and understand.
Greg's review of Thom's latest opus is a not-so-subtle reminder of how Americans no longer can trust government-reported facts as true. Now they just produce flattering gaslight. One of the biggest problems with the lies reported by OMB, GAO, etc. is that it creates chaos in the economy by disrupting financial management. In my daily news summary yesterday, I reminded my readers of the tsunami of WH lies:
White House fact-allergic Spokesman Kush Desai dismissed concerns over a crash in the auto industry, telling USA Today that “President Trump’s economic agenda of tax cuts, deregulation, tariffs, and energy abundance” will make voters more financially secure.
I do not know a single top economist, Krugman, Baker, Pollack... who would link any of Desai's BS to financial security. In fact, any of the actions Desai mentioned risks an economic crash. But since this is the most incompetent WH in history, the clown-car cabinet probably believes it all to be true. Congress cannot eliminate or record government debt by cutting taxes - just the opposite. Deregulation injects chaos into markets. Tariffs trigger trade wars and inflation. Energy abundance means nothing if it costs more to produce than it can be sold for.
Well, Captain my, Captain, I think Greg is right on point. I, really agree with him. I, am still reading your page-turner of a well written book Thom. Thanks Greg! There you have it. Buy Thom’s book! Love, it!
I listened to this book all last weekend - couldn’t put it down! It was so interesting, and depressing. So much truth in there - I knew much of it, but this pulls it all together so well!
I am not a happy ending kind of guy like Thom. I've had happy endings both in my personal life and, as a therapist, with my clients. I have also had tragic endings. I try to be objective about such things. I do not envision a happy ending for the country. (I will discuss this with Thom the next time I see him - our meeting is planned for the Spring if he's still on Hayden Island and not in a gulag.)
I spent much of the morning doing a deep dive into a comparison between Trump and Hitler for my Substack. (Here: https://halbrown.substack.com/p/on-comparing-trump-to-hitler-by-hal ) We know how long it took for that reign of terror to end and how many lives it cost for the Allies to prevail.
Just finished reading it today. Very well written., as are all of Thom's books. Hard to write about something that is evolving as we speak. It could be updated daily. Highly recommend.
Advance ordered it, got it and am reading it. Every page is quotable, best of all you books Thom.

Protest at Congressional Republicans' offices. Do they not have daughters?
The discharge petition can be signed by any Republican House member.
Many of them privately say Trump is nuts.
"‘Epstein bomb’ about to drop, 100 GOP members to ‘jail break’ from Trump, Swalwell says."

We are on the deck of the Titanic, waiting for the Carpathian to arrive.
Typo in:
As Hartmann warns, democracy in America won’t roll in on tanks, it will come “packaged as entertainment.”
(Believe you meant ‘end of democracy won’t roll in on tanks”…)
Thank you for that. I thought the same thing.

Thom Hartmann is the narrator of our demise.
Hope not. Despite the analogies to Nazi Germany, the vast majority despise MAGA. In Germany, Hitler had public support.
So Does Trump. all it takes is 17% of a population, and Trump has at least 40%
I mention this because the biggest enemy is self delusion and false hope. Nothing but intelligent positive action will undo the regime.
Pinocchio has nothing on this fool !
On order!
