The tax figure buried near the bottom is the one nobody arguing "they're draining the country" will engage with: billions in taxes paid in, every year, by the population being marched out. Whatever this is optimizing for, it isn't the math.
Trump and his enablers, the Republican Party, shrug off our righteous fury as "derangement", but what is normal and natural about running over constitutional rights with a road grader? What is necessary and proper about rationalizing rank bigotry with protestations about criminality that is not supported by facts? They will have to answer to history's judgment, and no patri(idi)otic picnic party will smooth that over.
All the white folk of this country are descendants of immigrants or invaders. Time to remind them.
The flag waving freak-show that Patriot Front put on in DC is a prime example of why we can no longer abide with TRump and his voters. Keep your integrity instead of THEM. Let's find friends that have some empathy.
Demonstrations are a good place to look for friends and organizations that will help you keep your sanity in "these days" that can literally make you sick. Thom and Company are bringing the light. See you in the streets.
I highly recommend The Meidas Touch Network, I've Had It Podcast, and The Dangerous Ones---all are on YouTube. They provide accurate information and some much needed laughs.
For a boost in morale about the youth of America, there is Adam Mockler, Harry Sisson, and Luke Beasley. Kyle Kulinski, Kyrstal Ball, Bryan Tyler Cohen and Keith Edwards are a bit older. All are on YouTube as well.
Yes to all of those great choices listed. Texas Paul on YouTube is a great down to earth, “ ride or die “ democrat, worth watching. Also Mr. Global, an energy expert who is calm, factual and a truth teller. I enjoy Jim Acosta and Scott McFarlane also when I have time. It’s truly shameful that the legacy media outlets have gone down the rabbit hole of magat-drinking koolaid BS and whitewashing the reality of the incompetence and corruption of the current regime. I never expected going into my senior years to be genuinely worried that my family’s future, let alone humanity in general, will be threatened to the extent of struggling just for basic survival and necessities brought about by the policies of the Republican pedophile party. They are definitely a death cult of white collar criminals, pedophiles, racists, religious nutters, and misogynistic bottom feeders.
I keep telling people that this was never a white country. The Native Tribes were here first, before there was a border where Mexico & the U.S. meet. That was also part of Mexico, and those people of color were here first. So please keep explaining to people THIS WAS NEVER A WHITE COUNTRY FROM THE BEGINNING!!!!!!!! Maybe someday they will get it.
We are not going to flip the House or the Senate no matter how many people show up. The blood red MAGA tsunami is being preprogrammed even as I write. Musk has said this requires only the tweaking of a few lines of code. No one is doing anything to stop it.
We cannot out vote the flipping of our votes.
We need the proper cybersecurity to stop vote flipping in its tracks.
Why is no one even talking about this, let alone doing anything about it?
The wasps [the GOP], whose larvae [J.D., Rubio et al] eat a host [America] from the inside, are broadly called parasitoid wasps [the GOP] — a huge group that includes ichneumonid [Heritage and FOX], braconid [GOP Losers on the Hill], chalcid [6 on the USSC], and trichogramma wasps [Cali Billionaires]. These species lay eggs [Donald and Friends] inside another insect [the U.S. Gov't], and the larvae [Donald's, Witkoff's, and Lutnick's boys] consume the host’s tissues [the Pentagon's budget] as they grow, eventually killing it.
All for the love of Netty Net and Putie Pie.

At first, it was a matter of values. Then it became so much more than that. At this point, it is very difficult to interact with anyone who supports him. It is a struggle to understand how people who appear to be decent human beings can support this monster. Yet they do. Thanks for this essay - it reinforces my belief that I am on the "right side."
Polls clearly show that the majority of American voters firmly agree with you. Democratic Party “leadership” and its equally-insular consultants don’t. Corporate media is increasingly irrelevant. We fail ourselves if we fail to support politicians and candidates who demonstrate willingness and ability to see the core issues and forcefully attack them.
Also, how many know about Koch Industries, ALEC (American Legislative Exchange Council) and so many other institutions, including religious ones, that are under the radar, that have pushed their agenda to achieve basically where we are today, going backwards, not progressively forward, fighting against a rapidly warming planet ( Mother Earths FEVER), shared equality, etc. Inequality IS the enemy between us !! Great post Thom !! And love to ALL !! (the greatest gift)
Allow me to add to Thom's tale of why MAGAs seem unwilling to own their politics by asserting that they are not political - while asserting that they are devout Christians and true patriots.
While studying for my doctorate back in the late 70's, I participated in a fellowship grant program associated with a research institute where we learned our trade as psychologists by working as research staff and field workers on projects funded by federal grants. I was doing interviews and collecting survey data in mental-health clinics in major cities. My first visit to LA, I got woke to LGBTQ intolerance in a way both you and I were, and likely still are, blind to.
I was interviewing 2 or 3 teenage male prostitutes among the patients at the clinics almost every day. Some were as young as 14 or 15. Their evangelical parents, often from the Southwest, had thrown them out of the house when they discovered their sons were queer. In many cases, they were given a few $10 bills, and told never to set foot in their town again. They hitchhiked to Hollywood, then a notoriously gay mecca, in the hope of finding a more welcoming environment. Too young to get legitimate jobs, they were quickly recruited as prostitutes and drug runners in exchange for a shared apartment and spending money.
Many "Christian" religions in the US still do not tolerate homosexual and transgender parishioners. To those "flocks" being LGBTQ (a genomic birth anomaly), is a sin which merits rejection, not compassion. That remains the norm in the entire USA, not just MAGA voters. In America today, hatred and not respect, is the norm when it comes to sex-related matters. It is rarely hidden in social exchanges like post-ERA racism is in America today.
On C-SPAN/ Washington Journal this morning midway thru the broadcast, the first call I heard was a Republican woman and she claimed communism is spreading in America due to the Democrats. This “generalization” I hear so many times coming from the “right”, makes me believe a real problem is “they”might not realize they are being manipulated by divisive
Yes, very well articulated. But as we go into November and I'm canvassing, people still want to know what the Dems immigration policy IS. They think it is just have open borders.
I think we need to recognise some of the issues MAGAs are fearful of---that too many immigrants come in, they overwhelm our commnities ability to pay for them, they take American jobs, and they are not vetted before arriving.
We have answers back for those fears, but we don't hear the Democratic candidates really addressing them. For example, you'll find many schools in California, that are almost ALL non-documented students, also the court system is way overwhelmed and backlogged for processing immigrants, and most come for economic reasons, not asylum which makes it legally harder. And they can see. that not all the jobs taken are ones Americans won't work; we have a huge East Asian Indian immigrant population that has become fabulously rich using the H-1b visa pipeline straight to high tech. I think I can respond to those fears, but we are not hearing a clear messge from the Democratic candidates or the party. The Dems need to say something like-- massively build up court review system; maybe have some kind of limits on the number?, reassure people that Americans can get these jobs? Dems need a policy.
"We’re not in 1934 yet. The midterms are five months away. The country still has somewhat functioning courts (other than SCOTUS), a free press that’s bruised but breathing, and the kind of organized opposition that can flip a House and possibly even Senate majority if enough of us show up."
Yesterday, John Stoehr wrote about the Supreme Court's capture on Alternet and he basically shot down the idea that after a landslide election, the six right-wing fanatics on the high court will be motivated to return to following the Constitution.. This was one paragraph I thought should be noted:
"It doesn't matter how much "Trump has widened the aperture of the powers the federal government has." The next Democratic president can't change America without changing the court. It is not politically neutral. It does not serve the law. It is profoundly corrupt. And only a fool would forget that what this court gives, this court can take away. It must be held accountable for its impunity for the law, same as everyone. So expand its number, impose term limits, strip its jurisdiction, throttle its budgets – whatever it takes, because there will be no new dawn as long as there's a rightwing supermajority that's prepared to veto it"
I believe it is foolhardy to place too much hope in taking over both houses of Congress in November. The fascists have infiltrated too deeply and have too much ability to wreak havoc and they will continue until we change the courts, especially the Supreme Court, and a lot of other things, such as the media, schooling, and the reactionary/superstitious mindset among the general population.
I spent most of my life in Los Angeles, in the Westside, becoming almost Jewish as I was surrounded by them. I went to Seders, even Shabbat services. Though I am very much not Jewis
Stephen Miller is, and a poster child for Stockholm Syndrome. Hitler would have gassed him, and he would have done the same to Clarence Thomas. Yet now they would do to others what was once reserved for them. They will get a special place in Hell, or if a benevolent God sends them to Heaven they will be on its lowest level.
The disrupting effect of MAGA on our families is as severe as it was before and during the Civil War. I have close MAGA family members. I avoid all things political as much as I can, because in so many ways they are great people, kind, caring, loving. For everyone but those horrible illegals, whom they blame for everything from delays in our getting medical care, to losing jobs, to crime. Facts do not impede them in their beliefs and their hostility. I have become numb to the names I am called, communist being the mildest. Absurd, given we are hardly poor, if not rich. We are comfortable, and in my severe disability, well cared for. The depredations of the felon in chief, the hideous RFK, Jr., ICE, will have no impact on me and my family, except in increased taxes to fund tax breaks for the morbidly rich.
I do not know if the divisions being furthered by the plutocrats and MAGA world are healable. I fear that the only thing that will heal the ones I deal with daily is my passing, which I long for at age 78, and despite the joy our grandson brings me, whom I have helped raise from the day he was born.
Because these divisions seem so implacable, compromise is a chimera. Our only hope is domination, suppression and redress, which if it is to happen must start in November. As you often write Thom, tag, we're it.
Genuine question for the people nodding along at "cut off your MAGA relatives": doing that in 2016 made some sense... nobody fully knew what they were voting for yet.
But 2024 needs a different explanation, and "he's evil and they knew" doesn't actually cover it.
A lot of the people who voted for him this time weren't voting for him. They were voting against nine straight years of being told that disagreeing with you makes them irredeemable, that the correct response to a family member's vote is exile, that quoting something he said in a campaign speech settles the argument. That's not resistance. That's the most effective, free turnout operation the GOP has ever had, and we built it ourselves.
I'm not saying this from the other side. I'm a liberal, I want him gone as much as anyone here. I just think "cut them off, quote the worst thing he said, feel righteous" doesn't shrink his power. It doubles it. It's the same move that got him re-elected, and doing it harder isn't a strategy, it's a habit.
Wrote the full autopsy on this if anyone wants THE RECEIPTS instead of just my TAKE.. I liked this post and I get the message. BUT here's the paradox. We do need to keep up political discourse with everyone we can.
In our small rural county in Washington State, which ironically is part of the Portland, Oregon Metropolitan Statistical Area, we only have 8500 voters. Our Democratic Party has been going to the households of every voter, as part of a listening campaign. We are asking people what their most important issues are, and recording that as part of the state Democratic Party's deep dive initiative to update our voter data (Washington state does not include party affiliation when registering people to vote.) We are finding MAGA people willing to talk, although we also find quite a few who won't. We can't be isolated in this situation. People need to know who we are. We pass out our county democrats brochure to everyone who wants one. We also are building community among Democrats who aren't signed up to get our emails, or who don't know about our social events and meetings (we have three regular county-wide events each month as well as neighborhood meetings.)
Yes in our country now we have a real divide. It is fascism and some of us recognize that fascism is what we are facing and we need to do everything to counter the authoritarian moves and the increasing power of the billionaire supporters of authoritarianism. The other party is complicit with the authoritarianism. But we still can talk. In our county we are jointly sponsoring a primary candidates night this week, with the explicit message that we can listen to each other.
On the left we can understand nuance, context and recognize complexity. We can see beyond the black and white, right or wrong view that motivates some on the right. For those of us who are able, we can articulate our perspective and hope to find a few people to listen. If you can, continue to talk to people you disagree with, however you can. It's easier in the context of the Democratic Party and candidate organizations and working on this election. Volunteer. And yes, it's not up to those feeling most vulnerable to do the work. Let's try to work together, support each other and build a movement to explain our vision to people. It shouldn't have been up to people of color to explain what Black Lives Matter to white people. We can build a movement to support our vision of America where everyone belongs. Volunteer in this election cycle.
When love is defined as complete and total acceptance then those you love who voted for Cheeto and Nazi Republicans are completely and totally accepted for who they are....racist bigoted misogynistic people. It's just a fact. No judgement just what is.
With that as a basic premise one has a choice. Hang around them or not. It's not that you don't love them, you just choose to not be associated with them because they have shown who they really are.
Nazi Republicans Spitting On The Constitution: White Power Politics
July 4th on the 250th anniversary marked the continued racist division. This time however instead of a physical Civil War, it’s a battle in the collective mind of the nation about who belongs and who doesn’t. Now it’s the CNPP(Christian Nationalist Ped Party) who says that not all men and women are created equal and that the country needs to go back to pre Civil war years where slavery was ok.
Our country is based on the rule of law. WE the People demand that our government uphold the rule of law and the foundational principle that all men and women are created equal. Executive orders to get rid of DEI and to abolish integration by government contractors done in the first weeks of the Nazi Republican occupation tell the story of a developing Confederacy and the eugenics philosophy that there are humans that are superior and deserve power.
Nazi Republican Congressional legislators turn a blind eye to this racist lawless conduct by a traitorous hateful racist misogynistic president supported by the partisan black robbed hacks that are called jurists on the Supreme Court. Regardless no one should give these Nazi Republicans any leeway because they are ALL complicit in the lawlessness and racist behavior. They took oaths to the Constitution but they’re spitting on that oath.
WE the People’s DNA demand WE fight tyrants. The Declaration of Independence was actually an indictment of a tyrant, at the time King George III. Now the tyrants of today, like those in WWII, are the Nazi Republicans. WE lose every fight WE don’t fight. So get angry and get ready to fight for all men and women are equal.
