Every weekday, I step into the studio for three hours of live radio/TV (after 3 hours of show prep that starts at 5:30 am) here in Portland, and then write the Hartmann Report every afternoon. Louise’s and my workday runs from early morning to the early evening.
We do it because the stakes for our democracy couldn’t be higher. The morbidly rich and their political allies are dismantling the very foundations of our republic, and silence is not an option.
This year, I poured my heart and soul into what I believe is the most important book I’ve ever written: The Last American President:A Broken Man, a Corrupt Party, and a World on the Brink. In it, I expose the chilling truth: Donald Trump isn’t an anomaly; he’s the logical endpoint of a decades-long plan by billionaires and corporate oligarchs to destroy American democracy from within and replace it with a strongman oligarchy.
It’s not just a book, it’s a warning flare. And alongside that (and my other books), this newsletter and our radio/TV show are our way of fighting every day to keep the lights of truth burning.
We’ve been at this for more than twenty years now. Through it all, Louise and I have thought of this community — you and our other readers and listeners — as family. Together we’ve weathered dark times, celebrated progress, and held fast to the dream of a just, sustainable, democratic America.
But we’re again at a crossroads. Progressives and liberals are under threat, voices for justice are being targeted, and the machinery of authoritarianism is grinding forward. That’s why I am vowing, right here, to stand up to power. To keep writing. To keep broadcasting. To keep telling the truth, no matter how uncomfortable or inconvenient it may be for those in power, or dangerous it is for us.
This is where I need your help. Producing these reports and shows requires tremendous effort and resources.
