Nice work, Repugnicans. You’ve forcefully and convincingly shown the world that we can’t be trusted, now or ever again. Trust is precious, betrayal unforgettable. The damage you’ve done is likely immeasurable.

Note to Democrats: Playing by the rules of “regular order” hasn’t proved efficacious. Consider paying more attention to your voters and less to your corporate donors whose preferences tend to be indistinguishable from those of the Repugnicans. Consider fighting the fascists instead of those in your ranks most ready, willing, and able to join the fight.

This post just got a “like” from Ontario. That’s almost painful. I grew up in Niagara County of NYS and have visited Canada probably hundreds of times. MANY visits to the Horseshoe Falls, dinners, Leafs game, meetings, etc., etc. When I had Sabres season tickets, the guy seated next to me was a Canadian. I learned and sang the Canadian national anthem attending those games. I’ve never thought of Canada as anything other than a friend, an ally, a simpatico sovereign nation to the north. I am so profoundly ashamed of our behavior, the imbecile my countrymen have twice elected president, and his traitorous enablers in congress.

Tom,I think it time to identify the corporate Dems and who their contributors are. Let's begin with Schumer.

William Farrar's avatar

Start witth Hakeem Jeffries and check Schumer. Jeffries, besides being a major recipient of AIPAC largess, met seretly with Jared kushner to cook up a scheme and scam.

And the pathetic SOB won his primary. He is a useless POS, might as well be a Republican.

I say we take Congress’s “Cadillac” healthcare & “paid time off” away. What’s good for the goose…

Why should “we, the people” cover their benefits when Congress works for PACs and AIPAC? Enough!

David's avatar

William, just amazing that 2 NY Dems are big recipients of Corp money. I thought they were believers in Dem. Stock market and these schemes have done it.

I apologize to our Canadian friends for the detestable behavior of our most awful of all presidents. This too, like a kidney stone, will pass. In the meantime, however, we are stuck with "monstrously cruel and stupid" as our operating system, our default setting. What is worse (if that's possible) is that the Republican Party seems to be so totally bought in to this worldview that they would continue in it full force, even if Trump were gone.

Trump is a lifelong racketeer. They rule by extortion and, when necessary, by inflicting pain on those who disobey. Like most billionaires, he is not a genius businessman. He is just a ruthless sonovabitch who takes and takes and takes.

Thank you for writing this brilliant article my husband and I both born in early 1950’s were taught about the Great Depression our grandparents and parents taught us more than we ever learned in school books.

The Smoot- Haley Act according to both of our families was the final hatchet to middle class Americans. Banks were frozen to lend a helping hand for small loans the department of agriculture stepped up for my husband’s family just enough to get seeds and fuel they farmed at that time over 2000 acres in Bucks County Pennsylvania the Department of Agricultural set up a back door deal with Campbell Soup where they grew tomatoes turnips and pumpkins other farmers across this country were not as fortunate.

My family had to join forces and moved to outside Harrisburg some made it some did not.

The point I would like to make is that from what we were taught ( I could give hundreds of more examples) that we are right now on a path to another Great Depression with absolutely no turning back. Of course Trump will blame Democrats blame Biden and sadly many Americans will believe him that we cannot change. I frequently think my grandfather’s advice that “ common sense “ pay attention will get you through any hardship. Buy what you need not what you want these days I believe are the worst this country has ever seen in history Dad would say if he was alive today” Buckle up your boot straps broken or not common sense is your compass”

Love it: Donald Herbert Hoover Trump or maybe Donald Herbert Adolf Hitloover Trump... I do not believe the saying that 'history repeats itself'... history is not an exterior, independent mechanism or cosmic/Einstein/Newton clock thing... rather, the appearance of history repeating itself is because we, the human race, keep doing the same stupid things over and over again. Thank you for the history lesson: I will study in greater detail. One thing: I don't believe Donald is doing this on his own; I think it's the (what are they called?) Project 2025 and Amerikkkan Enterprise Institute and other medievalist/anti-democracy conspiracy organizations that work for the oligarchs and with the oligarchs. The first thing to remember about the oligarchs is that they are international and have no loyalty to the USA or any other nation.... so we're dealing with sociopathic, ruthless hit & run robbers on a Billionaire scale... that is why Putin has surrounded himself with billionaires (mostly AIPAC brethren) whom he kills at a whim so that many have moved to London (now called Londongrad in honor of Stalin). We are at a critical moment in history. Either we get our Constitutional (balanced, Roman-style, Athenian, as modeled by the Founders) democracy back in November 2026, or I think we're going to go from sliding to plummeting into an abyss of no return. In Rome, it was 46 BCE with Julius Caesar finally finishing the job of the big money (boni et novi, traditional and newbies) and launching the thousand year tyranny of the empire. JTC

Excellent. History doe repeat itself, not exactly, but in total, yes, because our species is feckless, lazy, has no memory and is unconcerned unless pain is felt when they step on a tack or stub their toe..

We are the same people as kept helots and slaves, wrote graffiti on the walls of Rome and Pompeii, Who flooded to the coliseum to watch men kill each other and animals, only we put a veneer on it, and call it sports

John, great article, thanks for pointing out Project 2025,American Enterprise Institute,AIPAC, and other groups aligned with the AI crowd including Musk,Bezos, especially ( Jensen Huang-Nvidia),Google and many others. On this website we should make a list of those I just mentioned and many others who do not believe in Democracy,do not believe in the rights of minorities, women and whose only objective is to gain political and economic power.

Trump's demands on Canada, which have not been specifically listed in most news reports, reminded me of something. In 1914 after Franz Ferdinand was assassinated, Austria-Hungary made a series of demands on Serbia, whom they thought was behind the plot. Some were okay, but others would have destroyed its independence, so naturally the Belgrade government rejected them. And that was the excuse the Austrians wanted to invade, touching off World War I.

So as I see it, Trump is either incredibly stupid, or he is incredibly stupid and backed by people who want a real conflict (hopefully just economic) with Canada, if not the entire world. If so, their thinking seems to be that if they push hard enough they will win everything. Of course they won't, and likely one of the first casualties will be the death of the dollar as the international reserve currency. But logic and facts never mattered here.

A great analysis. Trump has charm, to some, but he is too emotionally crippled & vengeful to care about the U.S. or the world. In the Archie Bunker-" All in the Family" a refrain was " We need a man like Herbert Hoover again". The Russian government made a great choice backing Trump. He is doing what they could never accomplish militarily. I hope the Democratic party can clean it's own house & select a strong, unifying leader to challenge Trump & his backers.

This administration is a great cover for all the dirty deeds that the morbidly rich are and have been perpetuating on the US public.

Everyone is so busy looking at and listening to the paid-for administration and reps in office with their both tragic and criminal acts against the public, that few are watching how we’re actually being gobbled up by “our own” handlers and those relative few they truly compete with, the oligarchs from around the world. Our politicians are merely a terrible smoke screen in their world of business, and money manipulation.

This is what the billionaire controllers want. Even when they know it may cost them here and there and in the short term, that’s chump change, and this administration provides an outrageous cover for their conspiracy that we may never recover from.

Politicians come and go while these relatively few financial manipulators are hunkered down and bunkered in and believe they can outlast the next ice age. This is their most blatant scheme yet.

They patiently appear to be controlled by the lunatic in the WH while they continue to undermine everything we stand for as a people, and pretend to kowtow to the idiot-in-chief.

These relatively few yet fantastically wealthy manipulators have made more inroads to take over and control our politics, our news, our finances, our courts, our energy sources, our minerals, our governing infrastructure, our healthcare, education, the water we drink, the food we eat, and even our air quality, than any other time In history.

While everyone is looking at the paid-for orange fool, and fearful about their rights, religion, or the basics of just keeping our heads above water, these billionaires set the stage for their future with little or no conscience or compunction for what they cause or who they hurt.

They use their corporations and our politicians not to benefit the people but rather to steal from us and use our tax money to get what THEY want, all behind the closed doors of their high rises through either political or corporate manipulation. Through all their complicated deals they make they believe themselves to be financial geniuses and keep score by what they’re worth.

We the people who do the work and most of the living are being systematically undermined at every turn and are little more than collateral damage to these people, as can be seen in every war we fight ultimately because of these financial manipulations.

They have complete disdain for both “the people” of this country or any other country, for that matter, because they are merely borders on maps these billionaires and international bankers ultimately control.

We have to start looking squarely at the ones who are the true task masters and string-pullers. This admin. would be gone tomorrow if it served their needs more efficiently. Right now it protects the power behind the throne, the one’s, who have never been so invisible or so protected by every dastardly act and law this administration overrides and breaks. The more these clowns fu and the more outrageous their deeds, the more that all our fingers are pointed in the wrong direction, and all our heads are turned away while we attempt to protect ourselves from the wrong enemy.

Trump and Republicans are insanely intentionally cruel and enjoy inflicting pain with a lawless fascist autocracy created with a criminal insurrection that rejects the rule of law and supports economic and other warfare to steal wealth liberty and happiness from everyone including Americans and people in other countries who are long term allies like Canada. The tariffs are just part of the overall cruel warfare .About 50 million registered voters in America still support Trump with a 33% approval rating because they also hate democracy, women people of color, immigrants and enforcement of equal justice under the law. America needs a major house cleaning that holds criminal violators of the law against the ongoing insurrection in America accountable with arrest, prosecution, conviction and imprisonment. The insurrection created a lawless fascist autocracy with support from a Confederacy that was never defeated in America and returned since the 1970s with billionaire oligarchs who love slavery and now run the country. The latest actions by the criminal six justices on the corrupt Supreme Court that supports the insurrection were to reenable the Jim Crow laws, kill civil rights and block protection of voting rights. Since the Powell Memo in 1971, the Republicans corporations and wealthy oligarchs have worked to destroy democracy and reinstate the Confederacy.

Now, if only Europe grew a spine. But not the fucktards, like Mark Ruttee, rush to D.C. to bend a knee, debase themselves and kiss the ring. And this behavior only empowers and encourages him,, it convinces him that he is he Emperor of the word, or at least the western hemisphere

Take Iran, there is no regime, I detest more, than the Islamic Regime of Iran, the mullahs hang young girls from construction cranes for "disrespecting" a head scarf,,the Guardians of the Revolution (IRGC) has power to act as it sees fit., summarily executing people,, and in January a volunteer force of religious fantics, the million man Basij) machine gunned 30,000 to 50,000 protesters.

Trump's war is also costing me at the gas pump and in the supermarket, but if the only way to get rid of Trumpism and MAGA is for Iran to win, then go Iran.

If I have to wear a hair shirt, to regain my freedom, my liberty then a hair shirt it is.

I will disagree with you, William. Iran, as a country, has NEVER done anything to the U.S. to warrant our attacks. They have not attacked our country and only attacked our military outposts because WE attacked them! Yes, they sure as hell do not have a respect for what we deem as human rights, but it is a theocracy, not a democracy. It is not OUR job to change that. The problem with oil and high prices stem from the actions of the U.S.A.

Please don't get me wrong. As a humanist, I do not support a theocracy in any form. We have seen through history how that works out and, unfortunately, appear to be headed towards one ourselves. If Vance and those of his ilk had their way, we would be living in one.

William Farrar's avatar

I do not understand your comment, nor get it's drift. I do not sanction the attack on Iran, for your info. But I stand by what I said.

I am conflicted. I want to see a regime change, meaning that Iran is no longer governed by the Ayatollahs, and the Guardians of the Revolution., at the same time I would like to see this whole mess, spell the end of Trump and MAGA

I never said that it was our job to change the regime in Iran, in fact the Regime in Saudi Arabia, and other Muslim states are as bad as that in Iran.

Women are treated like brood camels, and gays are executed or forced into sex change (as in Iran).

A Muslim is no nation for women or gays, polytheists or atheists, or anyone who believes in a secular government, with freedom of speech.

Speak out against Muhammad in Pakistan and your life is forfeit, same in Malaysia or Indonesia

During the Libyan revolution, about 20 Coptic Christians were marched into the surf and beheaded before the cameras.

Waajeeh the gay lion, has his own substack, and co hosts with Malcom Nance on Black Man Spy.

He was raised in a radical ISIS supporting Saudi family, and is living in the U.S. as a refugee because he is gay and would be beheaded in Saudi Arabia.

But none of this means that I agree with Trumps's war on Iran, actually it was dreamt up by Netanyahu, October last, and the plan was sealed over dinner at Mar a Lago on Dec 28th. Netanyahu's goal was to decapitate the Iranian leadership, the asshole has no idea how Iran is politically structure, you can't decapitate because there is another head, even more radical and younger, read to stop up.

Trump jumped in to give him cover.. It was suppose to start in January, but Trump had the USS Gerald Ford deployed on his won obsessive mission in the Caribbean, to capture Maduro, when that deed was done, the Gerald Ford set sail for the Mediterranean.

Want to know that Trump is up to, follow the carriers.

As regards decapitating Iran. No can do.

They have been playing since 1989, and they have broken a country of 93 ,million people up into a Mosaic of 31 independent and autonomous IRGC sectors. Each one can act independently for the common cause.

The should have had a clue, because the day after Trump and Hegseth unloaded their bombs and Tomahawks. Iran retaliated with missile strokes on military installations, and hitting them hard.

It didn't take a central command to do that, nor orders from the Grand Ayatollah either.

You made some bad and wrong assumptions dude. suggest that you slow down, digest, consider before responding.

I'd like to inject a note that is not exactly germane to today's post but one that been in the news for several months. AI has been projected to create massive unemployment in this country and many other between now and the end of 2027.The response from Musk,(Jensen Huang-Nvidia) the biggest company in the world is AI is going to make our lives better knowing full well that is not the case. 25-30 million job losses is not going to make our lives better. The institutions that support Nvidia are 1.Appollo Global,2.Blackrock 3. Blackstone 4Goldman Sacks, and KKR. These financial institutions know fully that AI is going to destroy millions of jobs and they are OK with that as long as they make money from their dealings with Nvidia. It is time for pushback, call these companies, tell them you know what their agenda is. Remember ,they do noT care if anyone here has a job or if you have relatives, children who could be unemployed forever in 2027.

Cheeto Will Preside Over The Greatest Economic Collapse In Modern History

The petulant Cheeto aggravated by SCOTUS has doubled down on his tariff policy like a child not realizing that his ego driven economic scheme is not only impoverishing the American people with inflation but its currency itself.

Cheeto with his childish reckless policy will cause further undermining of the dollar like Hoover did in 1928 with his Smoot Haley Tariff Act. This Act coupled with an over bought equity market brought about the 1929 crash. The situation is eerily similar as what is happening now And China understands this.

China is not waging a financial war against the US as much as it is protecting itself from a collapse of the world’s fiat currency system led by dollar which is unfortunately the reserve currency of the globe. China saw the danger of the fiat currency system in 1982 and began accumulating gold and silver reserves and now estimates through cash flows of the country that she has between 40-70K tonnes of gold. When China announces its gold reserves it will signal the collapse of the dollar.

The commodity market in general should not be understood as an equity(stocks and bonds) market but as a reservoir of goods traded within a price range As Macleod points out, “These are the points that commentators miss. It’s not just gold and commodities rising, but their unit of account is falling — failing is a better description”( bit.ly/3MJ8exY) Gold as silver rising equates to the purchasing power of the dollar decreasing. Protect what wealth you have by using dollars which is credit to buy gold and silver which is real money.

Canada would be well served to tariff the potash, wood and electricity supply that they send to the United States if Don has said that the US doesn’t need Canada. Show Don he really is not in charge of our dear neighbors to the north. Why wait until September 8th?
