This is not news to me, I've been blasting all of this and more with a bull horn for ages,.

All our kvetching, all of our bitching, all of our writing marching and screaming means nothing, if we can't vote and our vote doesn't count.

It is not who votes that counts, but who counts the vote: Stalin. In that he was wrong, if you can't vote, it don't count.

Mail-In voting seems to be the best approach to minimizing the damage. Have to be sure that does not get taken away.

Also, is the National Guard able to be called on by the Governors if ICE shows up.

William Farrar's avatar

The National Guard can be called up by the governor, however that will put him in direct conflict with DHS, and I think that is all Trump wants to declare martial law.

We have to face it, This is a Robson's choice, The Democratic Republic that we grew up is an illusion

Martha MacRae's avatar

Thanks for our response.

I agree that the Democratic Republic is an illusion at this point. It will be hard to get it back unless the money can be extracted from the process.

The trouble is, it's the money that will make that very hard to fix now that it's gone this far.

But not impossible - if the politicians find ways to communicate effectively with the people where they are - on a regular, on-going basis; rather than just when there is an election. That's hard work though and very time-consuming.

This is not a new situation. Teddy Roosevelt, Was Wm McKinley's VP, and became president when McKinley was assassinated.

The Republican party, even then was the party of the oligarchy. and TR was famous as a trust buster, creating the FDA, National Parks System, sot they lined up to advance another candidate for the 1912 election.

TR bolted and with others created the Progressive Party, which became popularly known as the Bull Moose party, because it choose a bull moose as it's mascot, he lost to Wm Howard Taft, a pot bellied, Fat cat Republican.

The Republican party has always been the party of the oligarchs, only we had different names for them down the ages

The Democratic party, until LBJ, was the party of the blue collar working class, which was, especially in the south, the party of racists. Jim Crow laws, segregation, was the work of Democrats.

It is said that only Nixon could have gone to China, because the Republican party was notoriously anti communist, and we had been in Vietnam fighting communism..

Well only a Democrat could have created the great society, Civil and Voting Rights act. Which eventually led to the white working class fleeing to the Republican party, and the Democratic party left trying to redefine itself.

Doing so, half heartedly

The Republican party became theparty of the oligarchy and the white racist working class.

There is a thing in marketing called market segmentation, in other words find an unserved part of the market, and cater towards them.

The unserved part of the market is progressivism, and the base of the Democratic party has been moving towards it, but with resistance from the entrenched consultants, analysts, professional politicians. who, because they are dependent on the oligarchs, equate professivism with socialism which they equate with "commonism"

Now I am a progressive, a socialist, but a staunch anti communist, as communism is the extreme, just like oligarchial monopoly is the extreme of capitalism.

I am not anti capitalist either, if not for capitalism we would not be alive, and there would be no United States of america. because there would have not been a London Company of Virginia, and thus no Jamestown, and all that follows.

Very good, informative post.

I did call my senators office to remind her that there needs to be much more push back to the criminal anti voting the Republicans are pushing. They ( Democrats) need to get really loud and pissed off about what the thugs in the Republican Party are doing. Of course we have no real mainstream media that will publish Democratic push back .

The Democrats cannot afford to swat away these malicious poison pests. It’s time for a cannonball directed at these horrific plans to thwart the elections . Speak up Democrats , raise hell . It won’t work to ignore it or downplay this attempted disaster.

Party loyalist, corporate Democrats are a large part of the problem. They like it the way it is. Being an elected representative in DC is veeeeery lucrative, and running for office - even if you lose - is very profitable as well. Being the opposition party can also be cool - you don't have to do as much real work, just complain and go on talk shows and vote no from time to time, and you don't have to be held responsible for everything going to hell.

Why aren’t we calling this what it is: a coup? Perhaps if we actually defined it in such a way, we would recognize the need to fight back, fight to save our country from the evil that is destroying it.

Derelict and/or delusional Democratic “leadership” has historically made a point of “moving on” rather than litigating (that, literally) Repugnican crimes, encouraging thereby ever more egregious high crimes and misdemeanors. Now we’ve “moved on” to fascist, incompetent control of the Executive, Legislative, and Judicial branches of government. Establishment, corporate Democrats and their richly-rewarded consultants, the Third Way types, the moderates, are showing no real interest attacking and defeating democracy’s enemies. In fact, they prefer to ignore, often attack, the most energetic, passionate patriots on their side of the isle, while ignoring the rising voices of the voters. If democracy is to re-assert itself, we must pasture the poseurs and promote the principled.

Dems and the spectating/passive "Press" remind me of Charles Atlas's Mac . . .

Mac was a fictional character created by advertising executive Charles P. Roman, who wrote the famous “97‑lb weakling” storyline for Charles Atlas’s comic‑book ads.

Mac was the scrawny weakling who gets sand kicked in his face.

Mac's [i.e., the Ds' and the Press's] transition into an Arnold S.-like bodybuilder is overdue.

Example: scrawny weakling Schumer sits at 17% approval.

Thanks Tom for giving us a concise summary of what has been done by the Republicans to stay in office. We already know what they do once they are are

There are people like myself who learn best from reading. And there are people who learn best from reading. That is why teachers tell the class what they are to learn and also assign readings and questions. Both groups require information presented. So keep on with both presentations. Thanks.

NEVER FORGET AMERICA ABOUT FASCIST REPUBLICANS

After the Democratic Congressional avalanche occurs, whimpering fascist Republicans will say, “oh we were just joking around” or “let’s just forget about that we tried to tear down democratic norms and institutions”, or “hey, we’re going to mend our ways”, or “let’s forget about election interference”. Cheap words from people who previously supported a fascist autocoup in which the president himself tried to overthrow the government.

But America wants political accountability from their elected senators and congress people. WE the People want AIPAC and big money out of politics and elections. The fascist Republican think tank, author of Project 2025, Heritage Foundation has actively corrupted the judicial branch with the help of a hypocritical Congress getting a politically biased SCOTUS. Destroying the medical system is a necessity for the wealthy because it saves $$$ because the social safety net is handing out undeserved taxpayer money to people who should be working. By the way eugenics is just fine for the wealthy, says RFK Jr and rascist policy is just great for Cheeto.

Fascist Republican corporate oil industry donors want the public to be blinded to the global warming for its own self interests. Stopping the culture wars like banning is up to WE the People. Instigating an illegal foreign war without Congressional approval

So no, America better not forget what these fascists have done to this country. Never forget. They should not be elected to dogcatcher for the next 10 years.

The bigget problem Thom is that the MAGAts own the press that most people get. The MSM are in their pockets or so falsely neutral in their coverage that people do not get the facts, certainly not presented in the priority they deserve. The internet is of course a sewer when it comes to the truth. We do not have responsible journalism anymore, because the morbidly rich have killed it, and will keep doing so. That is why I fear that the elections will either not occur or be stolen in November, and that if the country is not to go full fascist, it will take another very ugly revolution and a very different country will emerge, not necessarily better. But necessary if good people do no do all they can to preserve a government of laws and not just of the men who make and break them.

I appreciate the questionnaire at the top, re: w/video or without.

Happy either way, but do prefer just reading Thom's 'Daily Takes.'

Often catch his show, later on YouTube.

But - thanks for asking.

Think about what voting could be like if America was not such a backward, parochial, narcissistic nation. Elections could be ranked choice, so that you could vote for several candidates you like in the order you want - candidates would have to appeal to the broad populace, not simply a selective "base". Election seasons could be much shorter, and society would not have to spend such a large portion of its wealth and income on the elections/industrial complex. With financial limits the richest of the rich could not buy politicians. Gerrymandering would be a thing of the past.

And how about if all we had to do to vote was to go online, enter a private individual id code and maybe a two-factor authorization, and you could vote for your rep from your home. We could theoretically even have a referendum system where people could vote on key legislation, remove crooked politicians, and have a say in the direction of the country.

Democracy would thrive, and the world would be a better place everywhere. If only.
