Before Illinois elected J. B. Pritzker governor, we were cursed with the presence of a businessman named Bruce Rauner in that office. He, like Trump is doing now to Federal workers, tried to bust our AFSCME union by refusing to negotiate, and tried to bribe us to retire, an offer that was laughable and insulting.
We are in a new civil war, this one is not with the southern states over the institution of slavery, but with billionaires over the institution of democracy. They have been working up to this moment for decades, working in the shadows; now they are attempting a hostile takeover. Their vision and version of a better world is one of "limited government", which means limited access, limited participation, limited voting, and limited rights for those with limited incomes.
“The simple reality is that nations without a large and active federal government providing protections and services to its people never develop large middle classes. “ Thom nailed it
This has been going on as long as I can remember. In the 50's virtually all union textile jobs were relocated to the south...enter "right to work."
Between 1944–1954, all of the old Confederate states strengthened their anti-union arsenals with right-to-work statutes outlawing the practice of requiring all employees of union-represented plants to belong to the union or pay dues. The union membership rate in the South was 50 percent of the national average in 1939, and as of 2016, the Southern average had slipped to 43 percent of the national mean—particularly telling given that the national figure is now only 10.7 percent.
Since the 1930s, a steady proliferation of industrial enticements and subsidies, including free land, tax exemptions and low-interest bond financing offered by state and local governments, has effectively made anti-unionism the sine qua non of Southern regional development strategy. Protecting these investments of public revenue and resources in private firms made it even more vital to keep the subsidized company union-free.
AOC rightly identifies this as a constitutional crisis and probably pissed off the ossified old corporate guard of the Democratic Party in doing so. If she isn’t central to America’s future, America’s future is in doubt. Democratic “leadership” remains all but inaudible in the face of growing tyranny. It’s high time to throw the jokers out of our deck.
AOC has never to my knowledge said or done anything I consider offensive or negative for the country, quite the opposite she has been the best, support her!
Resistance is certainly a humane, sensible, and necessary response to this madness, but it's playing checkers when we need to play chess.
Unfortunately, the American system is broken after decades of ossification and neglect. Some pretty bold, and admittedly risky, actions to form a new governance model are needed. Right now, however, it seems to be crickets out there.
I am all for what ever works Doug, but at the present time the only alternative I see that is feasible is resistance and sabotage. They have the guns, they have the police (which includes the Army), they have the ability to, an do, sniff all electronic communications with AI much less, at the speed of light.
I must lack imagination, because I can not think of a way to counterattack. The Democratic party is merely the opposite side of the coin, and is weak, fearful, coopted and in some places complicit.
There are two Democrats in Texas, Cuellar and Gonzales, who are culture warrriors and vote with the Republicans on cultural war issues.
Cuellar and Gonzales were among the 46 Dems that voted Yea on the Anti immigrant Laken Riley act that passed Jan 22, 2025
Rachel Maddow illuminated another important aspect of all of this last night. She reminded us about the crackpot worldview espoused by Curtis Yarvin, who J. D. Vance has quoted and followed. Their belief is that the country should be operated as a business with a CEO who has dictatorial power because of some superior ability or business knowledge. Their "theory" is that democracy is too disorganized or lacking a center of focus (my analysis) and that all will be well if we just let one "benevolent dictator" make all the decisions. This is the core logic behind everything they are doing, I believe. Their commitment to this is total. This facile thinking must be exposed and debunked as quickly and as thoroughly as possible. Americans are predisposed to see this kind of leadership as acceptable and to see no distinction between government and business.
Thank you for those links. I think the question we have to ask is why this is only having an impact now. Right about the time Trump selected Vance, Rachel or possibly someone else on MSNBC ran that same clip and did a segment on the Yarvin, Thiel, and other tech bros idiocy. The corporate media certainly deserve much of the blame. But would people have cared or understood the implications if other media had picked up the story? Americans have to be hit over the head and beat with a stick and I hold our traditional authoritarian schools for their incapacities, distraction, passivity, apathy, and gullibility. Critical thinking is anathema in schools because in a compulsory paradigm, arbitrary authority is essential, and arbitrary authority excludes autonomy or being able to think for oneself or deviate from group think and conformist habit. I suspect that few people will be affected much by new revelations and the pandemonium that just took place. No one will be out in the streets screaming bloody murder.
Riots will occur very soon in several cities. Exactly what von trump (and his degenerate racist billionaires) want to send the army in and pass other fascist freedom restricting laws. Beware! What a bunch of scoundrels, traitors to the Constitution and the Founders
Not sure the armed forces will back the felon in chief soon. As to the vulnerable among us, who are in the tens of millions, I have this thought: if you put a bunch of people up against a wall in front of a firing squad, you’d better be sure THEY don’t have any guns of their own. Of course, a violent bteakdown of our country is what the morbidly rich want. Then our enemies can fill the power vacuum we will leave, and even think of invading us themselves. Putin, Xi, Kim and Iran are loving all of this. Which should tell even the dumbest of MAGAts how wrong it is. Alas, their “news” sources will tell them how great it is, as they lose their medical care and other social safety net programs. Because at least they will “own the libs”, which is all that matters. That, and lining the already bursting pockets of the felon in chief and his morbidly rich cronies. The American Experiment is about to self-destruct. Not sad. Tragic. For us and the world.
You are exactly correct Jack, but I can't credit you with foresight. I've read The Turner's Diary and have paid attention to the likes of Charles Manson and others on the right who want to start a race war. 13.8% of the population is black, and arrayed against them are not only whites, but the Hispanic population., both of whom are heavily armed, and then there is the Federal police forces, which includes the Army.
We don't know what the Federal police forces think or believe. In other takeovers, they have capitulated in favor of energized leaders like Hitler and Trump.
We don't know what individuals really think and believe, and police forces are made up of individuals
However we do know that organizations follow orders, and that not only Federal police (which includes the military), but local police will follow orders of their superiors. In a blue state like Washington, there might be a conflict between right wing MAGA cops and the professionals.
My take: Trump is a tool and a fool. He only cares about being worshiped, feared and grifting.
As such he is a tool, Musk bought him, as has Kevin Roberts and Leo Leonard with flattery and their ability to motivate and mobilize the mob.
All of his actions since Jan 20th are straight out of the Project 2025 manual, everyone of them.
If you wish to predict Trump then read the manual.
He of course has his own private agenda, or shall I say, Stephen Millers and the Christian Rights agenda, which are addendum's, without complaint to Kevin Roberts Project 2025.
This is not Trump's takeover of the America, we need to look behind the curtain at those really pulling the strings.

Oceania (the Americas and Greenland), Eurasia (Putins Russia and Europe), East Asia
If we are lucky, the Trump Opus Dei libertarian regime will collapse via entropy and infighting.
And this is what I predict, Trump's regime will deconstruct America, it will take time, but it will become a shithole country, an inward spiral of hatred, anger, angst as it eats itself and the economy. Under Hegseth, the military will become an internal police force, and national defense will no longer be it's purpose.
Then starts the infighting, we've seen an early outbreak between the tech bros and the racists, wait till the Dominionists, Evangelicals, Opus Dei crowds start fighting for priority, recognition, primacy, money and power.
Adam Kizenger seems to suffer from amnesia and needs to take some personal responsibility. He never once mentioned the disenfranchisement of Democrats from the voting roles courtesy of the republicans Supreme Court. I am not buying his grievance against Democrats. He has no right to criticize Democrats.

Another brilliant article this morning ☕ Thom. I can't say enough about how close we are to a hostile Fascist regime. We are in a Constatusional Crisis!! Thank You for sounding the Alarm 🚨 and will reStack ASAP 💯👍🇺🇸
Thank you, Thom. Shocking truths. Are we all yelling into the void? So many voices sounding alarms, concern, and fear over what has happened to America is two weeks. Yet, I see little action. Some yes. Much too late.
The world is watching America melt down. It is unbelievable how quickly a 250-year-old democracy can come crashing down. Yes, I understand the republicans have been planning this for decades. Where have the counterbalance measures been hiding? We need them now.
I joined the WHO organization last week to ensure I can protect my family and friends regarding healthcare concerns. The WHO came back with a message, "We See You" and it brought me to tears. Who is seeing us in America?
I am a middle-class white girl. Privileged because I worked 50-60 hours a week for 4 decades so I can provide for my family. And provide I do. My three grown children are struggling with daily living. They will never have a pension plan, never have social security (at this rate), and struggle with expensive, overpriced housing and health care.
My mother can't afford to pay her mortgage, so I pay it. My sister can't afford expensive phone bills, so I pay it. When someone's car breaks down, I pay it. Why, because I am privileged to have worked for an amazing company that provided me great benefits. With the exception of mom, everyone works and still can't afford a life at the bottom of the economic chain.
Shame on America. The rich only get richer while the poor only get poorer.
AND Trump is using the M-word. Meritocracy. The M-word that really applies is MYTH. Damn fools think they and a few statistics can decide who is worthy. A person can be smart as hell, test well, and have the right "look" and still be the worst guy for the job. DEI helps us get a working team that makes the group better behaved and stronger.
I refuse to blame Democrats in 2025 for fascists and racists. Time to acknowledge the fact that half of the electorate fell for the grift. Sucking the money out of the system for the oligarchy is the goal.
Back in my mid-40s, I moved into my 13th house in Oklahoma City - the buckle of the Bible Belt. I needed to stock up on groceries so I drove down to the nearest store to fill my basket. While waiting in line to check out, I watched as the little boy in front of me was grabbing candy bars off the shelf of those displays common at every grocery. His father issued a stern "No" to each one until he finally, exasperated, bent down, grabbed the boy by the shoulders, and lightly shook him while he scolded: "Stop bein' so hateful."
I had never before heard that phrase, especially in the context of a little boy just being a normal little boy. He was not sinning, much less being hateful - just being annoying thanks to grocery store greed. Over the next 8 years, I did hear that hatefulness admonishment now and then. Okies are very evangelical, in part, because there is no separation between church and state.
After reading the litany of programs Trump is trying to starve to death, all I want to do is grab the Bible-Salesman-in-Chief by the shoulders and shout in his face: STOP BEIN' SO HATEFUL!
Tom, you must be near 100 years old. If you were driving in the mid 40's and buying groceries, you would have had to be at least 16- probably older, and the mid 40's were 1945 to 1948. In 1945 I was six, I am 85 now,

I know you are a few years older than me, I was 17 going on 18 when I joined up in 1957..
