This is assuming the US Postal Service isn't abolished and taken over by a private company owned by Republicans.

It is really cute that anyone thinks that free and fair elections will be available from here on in. Project 2025 blueprint came from Victor Orbans playbook(Paul Krugman's piece yesterday -From Orbin to Trump - part 1) a MUST READ!!!!! ) to break the Hungarian government become their autocrat. And SOMEHOW he still wins elections by 95% ! what a guy !! No all accountability is gone, gone , gone. IF we can have an election ? (trump said you only have to vote for me once ?!!) we will need paper ballots, cameras and GUARDS ...of course there is so much voter suppression...but that is another topic...I need another coffee !

You are 100% correct. I've been saying all along that Trump will probably cancel the 2028 election under some phony "national security" premise.

AS to the questions of mail-in ballots being discarded and not counted: I have been an election clerk in numerous elections at multiple levels (state and national), over many years, and I can speak to the fact that 1) any mail-in ballot received by the Town Office is checked against the voter list (using the signature on the outside of the envelope), then locked in a secure safe until election day; 2) mail-in votes are then taken out of the safe and added to the votes cast by in person voters; 3) counted by the election clerks in a prescribed way that means each vote is noted by both a Republican clerk and a Democrat clerk, and their totals must agree.

That is in your election district, in your county and in your state. Each state has it's own rules about elections

Of course. But I would suggest (and hope) that other states probably make at least some attempt to legitemise the system, even the ones that have gerrymandered the districts where voting is done.

Hope is an anesthetic. The way to deal with reality is to live in it.

A better way is to keep hope, but not let it anesthetize you. Use it as a strength to help you keep going.

Hope is not a strength,it is, however, an excuse.

Hope is passive Slaves are passive, the conquered are passive

Actually, hope is essential to continuing a fight. Being hopeless leads to giving up. Being in an apparently hopeless situation is paralyzing. Only if there might be a wee bit of success from whatever you think of to try, is it worth trying. Otherwise, you are just wasting energy struggling.

Hope is an anesthetic, anger, revenge is what keeps up the fight.

The gays, the socialists, the Jews rounded up by the GESTAPO, had stayed put in Germany because of hope. "That Hitler fellow can't be all that bad, it is just rhetoric".

When you have hope you sit on your ass waiting for better days or a savior.

You need to get scared and pissed off, to get off your ass and do something.

Voting by mail is the best way. Colorado's system would be a great model for the country. Ballots are received in the mail weeks before election day and a booklet with pros and cons on all of the issues is also received by mail. After mailing the ballot the voter is notified by email that the ballot has been received, then another email advising that vote has been counted. If we have midterms, and still have a US Postal Service, and if Trump's dictatorship hasn't cancelled free elections maybe we can see the house and senate flip majorities. Voting by mail increases participation and that in itself could help turn the tide. Lots of if's huh.

USPS privatization again under consideration, Trump says...“A privatized Postal Service would have a substantially lower cost structure, be able to adapt to changing customer needs and make business decisions free from political interference, and have access to private capital markets to fund operational improvements without burdening taxpayers,” the White House said in its 2018 proposal. “The private operation would be incentivized to innovate and improve services to Americans in every community.”

This is off the point. I have been pondering this since November. What if we the people come together to form a shadow cabinet. Qualified men and women to speak up whenever the current cabinet members do or say something idiotic.

I am kind of surprised the powers that be in the Democratic Party have not done this.

It will be fun to read your suggestions.

So far the Democratic Party doesn't seem to be overly interested in doing anything to resist, obstruct, or counter Trump and Musk. They say they're "deeply concerned," and that's about it. It's disgusting.

The problem is that many ballots were mailed out too late on purpose by the red and swing states so they are not counted. There are rumors that millions of mail in ballots were discarded (always democratic ballots). Drop boxes were removed. In 2016 DeJoy had $3000 sorting machines destroyed to slow down the mail (he is still in charge).

It seems that democrats have no control over discarded ballots and never investigate. Several drop boxes in democratic districts were set on fire. The corruption in our voting system is mind bottling, many people of color were kicked of the voting roll. Polling stations closed in democratic districts and Universities. We have a very corrupt voting system with little checks and balances.

Since the voting rights act was gutted things got far worse and the Dems have done noting to fix it. The whole country declared Trump the winner and nobody seemed suspicious, no recounts or investigation into fraud. I personally have zero faith in our voting system.

What about all the ballots that were purged by challengers to the ballots. Vigilantes that challenged thousands of ballots and were then thrown out? Greg Palast has done extensive research into this and claims millions of voters were purged, questioning the 2024 election results which were never investigated.

Expand full comment

Yes you are right I saw the video, also Stephen Spoonamoore (a hacking expert) send a letter to the Harris campaign and to Josh Shapiro to do a recount of the ballots. According to him, bullet ballots (voting for only 1 candidate) were much higher than usual in the swing states (less than 1 %) 11 to 17% in all swing states.

I don't think anybody followed up on it, I was suspicious about Elon Musk and his access to advanced technology.

Trump even boasted at a rally saying "Elon knows a lot about voting machines, that is why I won Pennsylvania with a landslide". I guess they thought it was a joke.

Expand full comment

Yes I really believe there is something up with this. Why didn’t they look into this? If There were over 4,000 ballots thrown out in the 2024 election you would think Harris or Shapiro would have done something!

Dejoy is still in charge because Biden chose to appoint a Republican to fill a vacancy in 2021. There are three vacancies on the board which Biden never filled, there are 11 seats authorized, but only 8 filled two of which are the PM General and his Deputy, the board is split 4/4 Republican/Democrat this is not the only instance that Joe betrayed us, the first was appointing Merrick Garland, the second was revoking Trumps Schedule F which he could have use to clean out Trump appointees (that one came back to bite him the ass because one was David Weiss who was overeager to prosecute Hunter).

Not getting rid of DeJoy was Biden's second biggest mistake. The first, of course, was appointing and keeping Merrick Garland as AG. What a waste he was! Trump would have already been in prison if we'd had a competent AG. Instead, here we are on the brink of dictatorship.

Yes ,Joe made a lot of mistakes, he was never a strong leader, always tried to stay in the middle. He had 4 yrs to expose Trumps disasterous presidency but never even uttered his name. Biden signed a lot of good bills and could have been a popular president but decided to hide out of sight, he never understood the power of communication, Trump and the media took advantage of that and managed to destroy Biden's reputation. To this day most people have no idea how much Biden has done for the country.

Voting via US Postal Service is first rate in MD. I have used it for 7 years and am very pleased. I’m impressed with its ease and efficiency.

I signed up online to vote by mail on the state portal. I receive my ballots by US mail in a timely fashion. I receive election notifications through both Postal Service and by email. State Election Board sends me a receipt of ballot received via email and also verification when my vote was counted. Both ballots and instructions are clearly written and easy to follow. Absolutely no complaints.

The real promise of universal mail balloting is that it helps explain and justify why we should have universal, mandatory ballot return each election. Note that I didn’t say mandatory voting — people are free to return an unvoted or partially voted ballot, but to close the loop and ensure that government has done its job in maintaining the voter rolls and delivering them a proper ballot, we have to demand that each voter return the signed ballot every time.

We spend all the money on elections, voter pamphlets, ballot printing and mailing — it’s not too much to ask that we be able to monitor our performance by demanding that each voter return the ballot so we can continue to ensure maintenance of voting rolls and maximum efficiency of our elections.

Unless there is a real coup and Trump Musk are ousted. It matters not who, how or when they vote.

It is not the vote that counts but who counts the votes.

Do you think Orban and Putin or Erdogan can be ousted via an election?

I have my doubts that there will even be a real election in 2026, something that poses as an election maybe, not not a real one, anymore than 2024 was a real election.

I think the sell out re Ukraine, Vance meeting with the Nazis, etc has to shake up even Senate Republcans. This may be a window oppotunity....

I keep sayin' we need Republicans to object -- pressure the Senate Republicans who voted for the Ukraine package https://thehill.com/homenews/senate/4464791-here-are-the-senate-republicans-who-voted-for-the-ukraine-package/

Here are all 22 Senate Republicans who voted in support of the spending bill:

Sen. John Boozman (Ark.)

Sen. Shelley Moore Capito (W.Va.)

Sen. Bill Cassidy (La.)

Sen. Susan Collins (Maine)

Sen. John Cornyn (Texas)

Sen. Kevin Cramer (N.D.)

Sen. Mike Crapo (Idaho)

Sen. Joni Ernst (Iowa)

Sen. Chuck Grassley (Iowa)

Sen. John Hoeven (N.D.)

Sen. John Kennedy (La.)

Sen. Mitch McConnell (Ky.)

Sen. Jerry Moran (Kan.)

Sen. Lisa Murkowski (Alaska)

Sen. James Risch (Idaho)

Sen. Mitt Romney (Utah)

Sen. Mike Rounds (S.D.)

Sen. Dan Sullivan (Alaska)

Sen. John Thune (S.D.)

Sen. Thom Tillis (N.C.)

Sen. Roger Wicker (Miss.)

Sen. Todd Young (Ind.)

From Meidas....… Republican Senate Armed Services Chair Roger Wicker isn’t thrilled with Pete Hegseth’s job performance so far: “He wasn’t my choice for the job. He made a rookie mistake in Brussels and he’s walked back some of what he said but not that line. I don’t know who wrote the speech — it is the kind of thing Tucker Carlson could have written, and Carlson is a fool."

… Wicker said he also disagreed with Trump’s comments that NATO provoked Russia to invade by considering Ukraine for NATO membership: ““There are good guys and bad guys in this war, and the Russians are the bad guys. They invaded, contrary to almost every international law, and they should be defeated. And Ukraine is entitled to the promises that the world made to it.”

… Trump was asked again today who he blamed for the war, Ukraine or Russia: “There are a lot of people to blame.”

… Trump was asked about Wicker’s comments about Hegseth: “I haven’t heard that. I mean, Roger is a very good friend of mine, and Pete is doing a great job. So, I’ll speak to Roger. I’ll speak to Pete. I’ll find out.”

The betrayal of Ukraine will most certainly lead to War. It will embolden Putin. He will take time to rebuild, refurnish, re organize, already his factories are increasing capacity to build more effective weapons. The US is not the only country to benefit from lesson learned. Drone and counter drone technology is improving daily, and even the hide bound US Military is realizing that they can't fight the last war.

In 1958, the U.S.,A.F. promoted it's first Senior Sergeant, and E-8, and retired it's Warrant officer ranks. in 2024 they reactivated the Warrant Officer ranks, only this time they were not an enlist career path. They took a leaf from the Army, which recuited skilled and intelligent teen ages, gave hem Warrant officer rank and put them in the seat of helicopters as pilots (Kris Kristofferson was one).

The Air Force is recruiting highly skilled technies and giving them a warrant. and a new warrant officer rank was created WO-5.

The State with the most to lose, is also the state that has given Ukraine the most military aid, in relation to their own GDP, and this is Estonia.

Lithuania is definitely in Putin's sights, because of the Suwalki Gap that separates Kaliningrad from Belarus (the low flat plain that is the border between Poland and Lithuania and has served as an invasion route since the Bronze age.

The problem in Germany is Putins stand in the AfD, and he AfD and all right wing parties in Europe exist only because of liberal immigration problems, and it isn't just immigration, though Brexit was inspired by cheap Polish labor and EU passports.

The problem in Germany, France, Italy, Greece is the Islamization. That is what brought Orban to power. He promised to build a wall and deport Muslims and he carried through on his promise.

One cannot solve a problem, unless one is able to identify the problem, and so far the west, in obeisance to liberal values, has not and thus Putin will inevitably prevail, as will the Islamization of Europe. Time is on their side, and one thing that Russia and Islam have, that America doesn't have is patience, and a long, long memory.

In the west the Crusades were ancient history, in the mid east they were yesterday.

The problem is not Voting Machines or vote counting. Voting machines, optical scanners electronically report results to a central tabulator, that is why Kornacki can put up on his whiteboard, votes that change by the second. it is there that the hack can be made, before it reaches kornacki and after the vote is cast. The middle man so to speak is the chock point and where the votes are counted, and as Stalin said it is not the vote that counts but who counts the votee.

Vote by mail is not a secret ballot. Some people think they are entitled to pressure their spouses to vote a certain way. Some churches think they should "help" their members vote. Employers could sponsor voting parties with barbecue, but also look over your shoulder. That is not a free election.

There's a real chance that free and fair elections will never happen again in this country. The billionaires are attacking our nation Phil Ittner, Malcolm Nance, Sarah Kindsior, Timothy Snyder are screaming that the END IS NEAR where are the Liberal/Progressive leaders, are we just going to let the destruction happen as it did in NAZI Germany, more poor peoples blood to appease the new billionaires in power. Maybe all the Liberal brain trust can do is write books.
