Years later, I moved to Illinois, which already had removed politics from civil service (a few no-show political appointments still occurred). When I worked for the State of Illinois, Republicans worked alongside Democrats to do the work we were all hired to do. We also knew that we would not be fired for being from the opposite party of the governor. Such policies promote continuity, consistency, and professionalism--the very "Deep State conspiracy" that rankles Trump's cankles.
