I don't watch his performances, I treasure my sanity, however I do read synopsis and opinions, and I just read that of some Bulwark Contributors. They said a lot about his rambling narcissism, but what I see is an inferiority complex, reassuring himself that he is no. 1
And that is dangerous, an inferiority complex that has to prove something is dangerous, look at Adolph Hitler. Narcissism and an inferiority complex are not mutually exclusive, rather they are mutually dependent, accompanied by delusions of grandiosity.
I tire of this Mark Twain quote that history doesn't repeat but it ryhmes,
No it is doesn't literally repeat itself, that is absurd, but in essence it does repeat itself, just the names, dates and specific events change, but the essence is repetitive.
Empires rise because they overpower their neighbors and competition, and they fall because they become fat, lazy, corrupt and over extended.
The fall doesn't come about like a hammer on an anvil, it is gradual, piecemeal, but inevitable and natural, humans and their constructs like empire, nations, political parties all go through the same cycle, insemination, gestation, birth, childhood, adolescence, adulthood, debilitating aging and finally death.
As technology and in particular information technology advances, so does the life cycle. That which once took a 10,000 years was compressed into 1,000 years then 5,00 years, now 250 years.
The collapse is only recognized in retrospect from the safety of distance and time.
Those that lived during the collapse of the Roman empire, did not perceive that they were living in the time of collapse
This is a great reference aboiut how history doesn't directly repeat itself, but does sometimes rhyme. It applies to what I wrote about today in "Should we call the Trump ICE/Customs the Neo-Gestapo or just immigration enforcers." Here >> https://halbrown.substack.com/p/should-we-call-the-trump-icecustoms
My wife also has 40+ years of experience as a clinical psychologist, and she concurs with that assessment. What is truly disappointing is that the mainstream media not only completely ignores this increasingly visible mental decay, but actually gives him free primetime television coverage for his lie-filled political speech.
When I was in undergraduate school, I was an intern at a state mental hospital where I met people who self identified as Jesus Christ.
I've prosecuted, acted as a master, was a judge in mental cases.
When he acted out in the NY cases, the judges could have had him evaluated. He acted out in open court. Tauted his opponents, even the court. The prosecutors failed to bring the matter to the courts' attention.
Meanwhile last night, simultaneously, Trump Media & Technology Group, the social media and crypto company part owned by Trump, said it would help develop a “utility-scale fusion power plant.”
AI: Key Steps in the Civil Commitment Process:
Initiation:
Petition: A concerned family member, professional, or agency files a formal request (petition) with the court.
Emergency Detention: Law enforcement or a treatment facility director can place someone on a short-term hold (24-72 hours) for immediate evaluation if they're a danger.
Evaluation: A healthcare professional assesses the individual to determine if they meet the state's legal criteria for commitment.
Court Hearing:
A judge presides over the hearing.
The individual has rights, including the right to legal counsel.
Evidence is presented to prove the person meets commitment criteria (e.g., dangerousness, grave disability).
Court Order (Commitment):
If criteria are met, a judge issues an order for treatment, which can be inpatient hospitalization or Assisted Outpatient Treatment (AOT) in the community.
Commitments are typically for short periods (e.g., 30 days) but can be extended if conditions persist.
Treatment & Review: The person receives treatment, and reviews are held to determine when they are stable and safe for release.
Common Criteria for Commitment:
Danger to Self: Inability to provide for basic needs (food, shelter) due to mental illness (grave disability) or intent/risk of self-harm.
Danger to Others: Threatening or acting in a way that puts others at risk.
Mental Illness/Substance Abuse/Disability: A treatable condition that leads to the dangerousness or disability.
Key Considerations:
State-Specific Laws: Procedures and criteria vary significantly by state.
Liberty Interest: It's a serious infringement on freedom, so due process protections are crucial.
Not Punishment: The goal is treatment and safety, not criminal punishment.
Daniel, how many times have people in a position to stop Trump failed like the prosecutors in the NY cases. How long will stupid people support him,my guess is after 1/1/26 when subsidies go away for health insurance, many of his supporters in red states who no longer have health insurance might change their mind.
Alarmingly the Bureau of Labor Statistics come up with made up data saying inflation is down. They have obviously been threatened by Trump and have come up with these bogus #s. Just another instituation that has capitulated like the Supreme Court,Federal Reserve, churches, non profits, universities.
tRump is unique in combining a multitude of mental illnesses. He has been shown to be an extreme malignant narcissist. He has also been diagnosed as a psychopath, and a sociopath. Don't even mention delusions of grandeur. Put all that together, you get one of the worst human beings the planet has ever seen.
At least he doesn't appear to be schizophrenic. He is consistently the same asshole he always appears to be.
This was an angry old man, without any filter, screaming at us for 18 minutes. If this doesn’t scream - no pun intended - for someone to use the 25th amendment to rule that the president is incompetent to run the country, I don’t know what is. How many times do we have to see this to understand he is either in declining health or just a madman. He can do serious damage if his cabinet doesn’t do something to curb this.
The depravity has reached a whole new level. Those military Christmas checks come with strings attached to a war in Venezuela. Is he also trying to buy the loyalty he will need to get them to turn on their neighbors and families every time he asks them to? Hell yes!
TRump and Epstein weren't just friends. They were in the same business, sometimes together. They both trafficked girls, blackmailed, and laundered Russian money. The witnesses and proof are out there along with the money trail. Cornered, he has fallen back on his "attack attack attack" Roy Cohn strategy.
TRump, Suzy Wiles, and the Nazis keep telling us who they are. BELIEVE them. Teach others about these psychos. Thank you Thom and Company---stay brave. See you in the streets.
So today we learn at another co-conspirator, Maxwell has asked a federal court to vacate or correct her conviction and 20-year prison sentence for sex trafficking of minors and other offenses -- a move that could complicate the release of the Epstein files as mandated by a new law.
Maxwell has exhausted all of her direct appeals, but filed a petition which contends "substantial new evidence has emerged" demonstrating she did not receive a fair trial, according to Maxwell's filing in federal court in New York.
"Among Ms. Maxwell’s claims in her petition were that three jurors in her trial concealed their own histories of sexual abuse from the court during the jury selection process. She also accused prosecutors of working too closely with private lawyers representing alleged victims who she said had financial interests in the outcome of her criminal case.
"A spokesman for the U.S. attorney’s office in Manhattan declined to comment on Ms. Maxwell’s petition."
He has pardoned a convicted, what HE calls, "narco-terrorist", other drug dealers, fraudsters, and thousands of seditionaists. Not a stretch to think he would pardon a convicted pedophle and human trafficker.
The Roman emperors often gave “gifts” to the troops who supported their accessions. Eventually the armies realize they could knock off an unpopular ruler and get a bonus for supporting a new one.
Thanks for giggle of the day, doc---took three years of Latin. Always felt like I understand them. Horrible by today's standards, and yet we have our share of those just like them.
Italy was the first place I went after being stationed in Germany. Nazis, Romans, we have them all.
Alis,he and virtually every other member of his cabinet and most Federal Agencies have used the Roy Cohn strategy in every issue. We just need to repeat "Deny,Deny,Deny,-Never admit you're wrong and Attack,Attack,Attack.
Thanks Thom I agree with all you said. All I'd add is that, as many of your readers likely do, I ask the question, what if Obama or Biden had given such a speech? Would TV commentators simply, calmly, point out the numerous lies and distortions he angrily bellowed out? No, I suspect on Fox News they would be calling for the presidents removal for such a demonstration of mental incapacity. And they would be right in doing so. He's clearly becoming increasingly more dangerous as his grip on power and sanity slip. If he's allowed another three years how high will the body count be?
BUT, in my mind wonderfully eye-opening - perhaps even to many MAGA types.
I have another take on the speech.
He truly believes he has all of Congress's power "in his pocket", and ditto the Supreme Court, which he believes will crush the Federal Judges who repeatedly attempt to support our Constitution.
BUT, he finds a need to bribe the military, because he thinks, nay perhaps just believes, they are still against him - except of course the idiot he put in charge of them.
It gives me hope to connect the dots ..... and believe that the military is still on the side of our Constitution.
What think you? I think his almost insignificant bribe will not work.
Even, or especially if, he wars against Venezuela - against OUR Constitution.
All this in less than a year. He's every bit as bad as I, for one expected him to be. I didn't, however, see the extent of the compliance by Congress. When will enough be enough?
He behaves like a cornered animal, which of course, can be very dangerous because there is no logic, only survival instinct.
He definitely needs to be watched very closely and his handlers better be prepared to do the hard thing. He may fire them or sentence them to a firing squad.
We're past the point of shrugging things off and now, we're into 25th amendment territory. But, the congress would need a majority and a supreme court willing to follow the law. So, let it all burn down. We'll pick up what's left out of the ashes and try again.
Not by the 25th. I believe that requires a majority of his cabinet members. If they removed him they would eliminate the teats that provide their entire sustenance.
You couldn’t be more spot on! Something needs to happen quickly as we are spiraling down into the worst kind of hell. All the wonderful things about our country have been undermined and desecrated. We of the older generation can only pray that some will arise from Gen Z or the millennials to begin to right the ship. It will be different but hopefully better…with at least some safeguards against this ever being repeated.
Like fingernails on a blackboard is the sound of Trump's voice. I cannot summon the words for how contemptuous I am of the portly predator in the gold-plated Oval Office. His diseased brain is failing him. His flunkies are screwing up. His tariff policy has us all paying more for goods from overseas. He is a sick politician.
How the hell do the television networks justify giving free prime air time to Trump's purely political and lie-filled speech...and without any air time given for a Democratic response? Not even any minimal post-speech fact checking! Of course I'd expect that from Faux News, but this was all the major networks!
I admit I was awaiting Trump's speech with more than a little anxiety...OMG, I thought, are we going to WAR?! Thank goodness it was just a shouted tantrum from an angry, disgraceful manchild who struggles with the truth. Please, somebody, get this pathetic excuse of a human being some help!
Complete lack of leadership is the dominant clue that Trump is indeed "deranged." Unlike dementia victim Biden, Trump surrounded himself with incompetent sycophants. Thus, the government is imploding under Trump because his staff cannot cover for him like Biden's did.
Good leaders lead by consensus, not by extortion and bullying like Trump does. Good leaders surround themselves with experts and strive to build teamwork and loyalty. Fear that the boss will ruin you professionally builds resentment, and eventually, withdrawal and/or revenge (who's Susie Wiles again? Michael Cohen?).
Dementia derangement is why the US economy is imploding. Mass shootings are up. Vaccines are now discouraged as epidemics break out across America. America cannot discourage an invader of a friendly nation to withdraw. America cannot stop genocide in the Middle East. America is daily violating international law by blowing up speed boats because Trump "thinks" they are smuggling dope. So much for Article 25.
I don't know it as a fact, but our MO in covert actions is to bribe some of Maduro's close allies to force him to flee. That's what we've done in several Latin American countries.
This incident was part of a 16-month covert operation that ultimately failed to capture Maduro. The agent, Edwin Lopez, reportedly told the pilot in a secret meeting that he would be made a very rich man and his family would be secure if he cooperated. The agent also mentioned the U.S. government's $50 million bounty for Maduro's capture as leverage in a text message to the pilot.
I like the picture accompanying this post, of Trump sporting a straitjacket in a padded cell. He is mad as a Manhattan hatter and needs to be removed from office. It would be against his will, of course, and most of the key Republican figures would also be resistant. Maybe they've all been sniffing from the same tube of glue. Ideally, there would be a single process for removing a president (or any other official) for either high crimes and misdemeanors, or illness, either physical or mental. And ideally, it would be regarded as legitimately in the best interests of the nation, not as political retribution.
Does anyone see the irony in the nation's #1 "progressive" talker publishing article after article about Trump's mental status while they covered up for Biden's advancing Parkinson's dementia until the bitter end, even going so far as to have speech experts on his show proclaiming that not being oriented to person, place or time was somehow a stutter. The failure to address Biden's declining cognitive state by the Democratic Party and its operatives like Thom Hartmann is one of the main reasons Trump got into office for a second time. Let that sink in as you read the ramblings of a dog food salesman who thumps his chest about democracy while refusing to allow criticism of Democrats on his show during the 2024 campaign and who has published ONE article on Gaza questioning if it was a genocide. That is not progressivism.
Agree Barry. We should have learned from the disastrous condition of FDR when he ran again in 1944. He was in no shape to face Stalin. But people forget history.
Let me speak as a therapist, one that retired after 40+ years, diagnosing and treating patients, and just answer to question in the title: it was a breakdown. It was a slow motion pile-up collision showing to the well-informed what happens when a person who is in the Dark Tetrad has what look very much like a certain subtype of prefontantal dementia. See: https://halbrown.substack.com/p/sadists-us-trump-and-the-dark-tetrad and https://frankgeorge8675309.substack.com/p/dammit-its-not-alzheimers-heres-why-c9f

Laughs out loud while rolling on the floor, holding my sides

NYT
Well that was easy, 1 in 3 women have been sexually abused. They don't like to talk about it in public and Maxwell will get a kick out that.
New trial---what about all the new evidence against her? Bail and release in the interim?
Still amazed he hasn't just pardoned that psycho. Maybe after the midterms.
IMHO she did it for Trump.
He has pardoned a convicted, what HE calls, "narco-terrorist", other drug dealers, fraudsters, and thousands of seditionaists. Not a stretch to think he would pardon a convicted pedophle and human trafficker.

Speaking of points G2, ten points to the sh*tbag that thought of it. Most of the time their moves are stupid.

If you watch the speech with the sound off, the demeanor looks nutsy koo koo.
If I were arguing to a jury, I'd point that out, remind the jury that they saw the same image I did, and sit down.
No need to discuss policy. No need to fact check.
All this in less than a year. He's every bit as bad as I, for one expected him to be. I didn't, however, see the extent of the compliance by Congress. When will enough be enough?

1. Congress can do it. https://jerryweiss.substack.com/
2. Read my comments above.
But will they? It certainly doesn't look like it until after the mid-terms, and even that looks iffy.
It's up to US to pressure them. Osmosis doesn't work.
Not by the 25th. I believe that requires a majority of his cabinet members. If they removed him they would eliminate the teats that provide their entire sustenance.

Congress can tie up his entire agenda.
But not with the 25th Amendment.
His cabinet are codependents. I hope you're not a lawyer.
