One hopes that given the opportunity, Democrats will turn a corner and find courage to hold powerful criminals to account. That’d be a refreshing first.
We know that the United States was born out of contradictions. The Declaration of Independence itself was penned by a slave owner. John Adams, our second president, was appalled at the notion of universal (male) suffrage. While the people have persevered in fighting to expand democratic rights, that strain of authoritarianism yet dogs us. But it has usually operated with enough shame as to stay covered up and out of sight. The denial of civil rights, the theft of the nation's wealth, the corruption, the persecution of minorities have always been explained away with a reason why we needed to live with such things. So, why has the strategy changed now to the extent that the corruption and injustice are so blatantly out in the open?
Believe it or not, I see this as a good sign. I believe it indicates that American fascism has come to a reckoning. It sees that a widening majority of Americans, particularly the young, are not falling for it anymore. There is no point in appealing to the gullibility of Americans to swallow the lie that racial minorities are their real enemy and that there is any justice in the top 1% of households owning 25% of American wealth. So what's a poor oligarchy to do?
What I am hypothesizing is that our corporate overlords are depending on so many Americans being so desperate for stability that they will support an administration that uses absolute power to enforce it. It rules with a bullying iron fist, and then it demonstrates it's absolute power by committing crimes in plain sight.
Why do I see this as possibly a good sign? The strategy that the American people will abandon their democratic rights in favor of a corrupt dictator who promises to impose stability at any cost, it seems to me, is a desperate gamble and a long shot.
