They believe instead that some education or some minimal and superficial education is necessary, but there is not any real need to achieve a high level or degree of education for more than a small percentage of the population. Intellectual mediocrity has come to be seen as normal.
If people truly believed that education was absolutely necessary to preserve and maintain democracy, they would stop pretending that schooling IS education and that faking it for a majority of the citizenry will suffice and is the best we can do. I suspect that I would have to include Thom Hartmann and most of the educators and school officials and nearly everyone else in that broad category of people.
Supercomputers are needed to track all of the research studies on schooling. The results of those studies are often couched in terms which avoid offending anyone and with attempts to spin the conclusions positively. Regardless of how hard everyone tries however, no one can deny that common themes coming from the research describe school climates which are excessively stressful and anything but positive, that there is student demoralization on an unacceptable scale, high absenteeism, low confidence and self-esteem for large numbers of students, chronic bullying, chronic boredom, and low levels of “critical thinking”, curiosity, and intellectual rigor, to hit the highlights.
I simply refuse to believe that anyone, perhaps other than a billionaire, is so disengaged and insular as to be unaware of the many intelligent people of this country who are nevertheless ignorant, poorly informed, or even badly misinformed. THAT IS NOT NORMAL. All of this represents a massive social failure and is what I believe constitutes criminal negligence by people who have sworn an oath and whose duty it is to assure that schools serve the public interest and welfare. National security and economic survival are the risks, as well.
When will people start to figure out that people who are conditioned to find reading and even thinking too difficult or too unpleasant is NOT normal? When will they decide that the affinity for authority and arbitrary rules and control over individuals which is perniciously and surreptitiously injected into curricula or into the school milieu is where this new “normal” is originating?
A million attempts at reform have failed. Arbitrary authority is the problem and it is the predominating reality for students for twelve long years. Why is it so hard to let go of a dependence on that authority? Why is schooling a matter of law when anyone who knows anything about education knows that it cannot be legislated or coerced? Americans are clinging to the very thing which we know is certain to be our undoing. If you do not want to be controlled and to live in an authoritarian society, stop building authority into the daily experience of children. Liberate them from these bad laws.
The help is situational and one time, not global. They will take a bite out of the pizza, but step away from eating the whole thing. They may join hands on one issue, then stand with Trump and MAGA on all others.

There are no gun laws in my state. I think you only need a permit for concealed carry, but I could be wrong. Open carry is legal, though I don't see many doing it. (We're not in TX, BTW.)
I don't know where ask the gun owners who claimed to be armed to repel an authoritarian takeover went. I'm not planning to be out in public if my town becomes an occupied war zone. They'd best be advised not to try to come into my house, though.

On a podcast recently by Resistor Vic, he claimed the Trump DOJ are looking at ways to restrict Transgender from owning a gun. This is the "slippery slope" type concern that gun owners fear and probably has stopped any gun laws/regulations from being supported enough to be passed. I guess the NRA has sent out the alert, don't let the government take our guns. Probably the sale of weapons has increased...it's a nightmare.
Pretty difficult to identify a transgender, it is a broad category and includes transvestities who are fetish males that dress up in private, a transsexual, depending on state, will have the ID of a female. and people think that they can clock a transsexual, but are too often embarrassed, the world is full of masculine looking and sounding women and feminine and sounding men.

If this is not a clarion call to stop funding this fascist takeover, nothing is. Paying federal taxes is the law, premised on the rule of law's nationwide respect and application, now utterly missing. Under Trump, law has become a weapon, used against the interests of all but oligarchs, religious zealots, and the very rich. Six Trump aligned justices have made clear that they are in on the takeover, and that they, too, consider brown people inferior, deserving of masked aggression and racial profiling. But how is normal established and how does it change? So, what has changed? How are the people different and more susceptible to these malign forces? One-third to one-half of the population has fallen prey to lies and fearmongering. For a very long time I have been screaming that the “normal” that is being propagated and the conscious and unconscious cognition that is allowed to condition and program our youth in our schools is perverted through the influence of reactionary, authoritarian, and unscientifically oriented people and ideology. I wrote then that this is indeed a critical time (I did not finish or send what I wrote). I hate to be picky or technical, but as I was reading that piece Monday, I felt a need to remind that the time “for all Americans to get educated” was a long time ago. What I realized was that, although we have all been taught (and have believed and have probably all repeated many times) that education is the essential key to keeping our democracy and our way of life, most do not really operate on the assumption or belief that is a valid and indisputable fact. They believe instead that some education or some minimal and superficial education is necessary, but there is not any real need to achieve a high level or degree of education for more than a small percentage of the population. Intellectual mediocrity has come to be seen as normal.
If people truly believed that education was absolutely necessary to preserve and maintain democracy, they would stop pretending that schooling IS education and that faking it for a majority of the citizenry will suffice and is the best we can do. I suspect that I would have to include Thom Hartmann and most of the educators and school officials and nearly everyone else in that broad category of people.
Supercomputers are needed to track all of the research studies on schooling. The results of those studies are often couched in terms which avoid offending anyone and with attempts to spin the conclusions positively. Regardless of how hard everyone tries however, no one can deny that common themes coming from the research describe school climates which are excessively stressful and anything but positive, that there is student demoralization on an unacceptable scale, high absenteeism, low confidence and self-esteem for large numbers of students, chronic bullying, chronic boredom, and low levels of “critical thinking”, curiosity, and intellectual rigor, to hit the highlights.
I simply refuse to believe that anyone, perhaps other than a billionaire, is so disengaged and insular as to be unaware of the many intelligent people of this country who are nevertheless ignorant, poorly informed, or even badly misinformed. THAT IS NOT NORMAL. All of this represents a massive social failure and is what I believe constitutes criminal negligence by people who have sworn an oath and whose duty it is to assure that schools serve the public interest and welfare. National security and economic survival are the risks, as well.
When will people start to figure out that people who are conditioned to find reading and even thinking too difficult or too unpleasant is NOT normal? When will they decide that the affinity for authority and arbitrary rules and control over individuals which is perniciously and surreptitiously injected into curricula or into the school milieu is where this new “normal” is originating?
A million attempts at reform have failed. Arbitrary authority is the problem and it is the predominating reality for students for twelve long years. Why is it so hard to let go of a dependence on that authority? Why is schooling a matter of law when anyone who knows anything about education knows that it cannot be legislated or coerced? Americans are clinging to the very thing which we know is certain to be our undoing. If you do not want to be controlled and to live in an authoritarian society, stop building authority into the daily experience of children. Liberate them from these bad laws.
The "creeping" dictator now has us in a chicken wing.
Moderate, centrist, pragmatic, neoliberal politicians may not be the answer.
We'll take whatever help we can get.
