After this handmaid's tale is settled law . . . the cherry-on-top for the GOP (Legislature & The Extreme Court) is to reintroduce SLAVERY.

Here's lookin' at you, Clarence.

If that isn’t some fu@ked up manufactured BULLSH!T by epic perverts! The Republican Party has gone full on sexual debauchery, perversion and savagery. Trying to force this kind of grossly reprehensible sexually menacing diatribe of hatred toward women is some kind of “law”? No, it is not. It’s not a law of nature, not a religious law, not a reflection of how men see women. It is, however, a statement of fact that anything that kept women as property regardless of how absurd, like a man with a broken, obsessive sexual self-loathing perversion, was good enough as a means to an end, and men didn’t care what women thought. We had nothing to counter with.

Trying to use this convoluted logic into forcing women back into chattel by associating with this madness is obviously a sexual preoccupation Republicans have. They’re all pretzeled up over penises and vaginas. They always have been. I would say this is laughable, but, SCOTUS is thumbing their noses at America. That’s what concerns me about this bunch of repressed sexual deviants.

So legislation was based on one man's perverted view of human sexuality?! OMG!

It goes so far beyond that. It "took a (male) village" to enact this monstrosity. They gave Comstock special Postal Inspector status with armed seizure and jailing powers, at his whimsy. The male medical establishment supported it, because midwives and woman-friendly abortionists impinged on their trade. (Male Victorian doctors performed clitorectomies on over-excitable women, by the way: so much for "Western Civilization" being all huffy about "barbaric" "female circumcision.") And don't overlook the book-burning! I've gone into more in other posts, no use duplicating....

When I was a teen, The only method of abortion was a close hanger and knitting needle, and deaths from self abortions were too common. The Romans used a herbal abortificent, research needs to be conducted and spread via the internet.

Another method was throwing themselves downstairs, seldom worked, more likely to cause death or serious injury.

This is where we are headed all because of some impaired and insecure males, who can't erect unless they dominate, and believe that a woman who rejects the fetus is rejecting him (his mini me).

It has nothing to do with protecting life, and everything to do with reinstating male dominance, poor things, who knew that some men were so insecure, that masculinity was an act, so tenuous, it even leads to road rage and aggression.

Also explains soccer riots.

You know, I think there's too much emphasis on male sexual insecurity. I think there is an enveloping yearning for re-establishing traditional and religious social order. Men at the top of the hierarchy, of course, females beneath, and "dominion" over nature, of course. Maybe part of my idea is book-learnin' about how very recently this fundamental organization has been disrupted. Any woman alive today would be shocked at the social and legal status of women when Comstock was on his rampage. But it was only the 1870's. That generation of women somehow stood up and persevered to campaign for what they didn't see, yet just an eyeblink over the horizon: women voting, 1920. In 1975, my Master-degreed, college-instructor Mom couldn't co-sign my first PG&E contract. We had to go get Dad's signature. 1975. Alito and Kas-whatsit only have to turn back the clock such a tiny tick, to when everything and everybody knew their proper place....

Thanks Mmerose, but you have described male sexual insecurity, it arises from the very factors you have described.

Males were once the top of food chain, dominate and women submissive.

During WWII women like Rosie the Riveter worked the production lines in arms factory.

After the war, the government created training films, showing the women, how to be a proper wife, wear makeup, put on sun dresses and devote herself to her husband and children.

And male sexual security was safe for those returning from the Pacific and Europe.

But the "damage" was done, and women slowly and quietly rebelled, passing the independence, capabilities and confidence on to their daughters, and even some sons.

And by the 1960's women were demanding respect and a greater place in society, and male sexual insecurity arose.

Take a lesson from nature. Testosterone is the hormone of aggression, During mating season it arises in four legged animals, it is called must. They then compete with other males for breeding rights, often violently, from monkeys and apes to elephants and rams. Even whales and porpoises, even fish and turtles.

Humans are no different. A male who feels diminished, is insecure, has trouble capturing the attention of females (hence INCELS) , if he has a woman, and he does not feel dominant, he has trouble erecting and copulating hence Viagra.

The rise of female self confidence and independence has resulted in the rise of male sexual insecurity, manifested not only the increasing sales of Viagra, but the campaign to force the female back into her submissive role, where the male was the unquestioned tyrant with total control over the women, hence anti abortion and even book burning and the anti "woke" movement.

Of course this is not the case with all males, I rather think that at least half of the male population is fully evolved to the point that they don't need to dominate a male, and in fact support fierce independence, education and self reliance.

I know that I do.

You're probably right: can't really sift out the biology from the sociology. One of my favorite illustrations of/from the late 40's, early 50's is from the Perry Mason BOOK. (Yes, folks, first there were many many books, and what an interesting read...) I wish I remember which title, but Perry finally did propose to Della. She turned him down. She says something about loving her job, but they don't have to say much. Both are in perfect, unquestioning understanding that if she puts on the ring, she puts on the apron, and that is the end of her exciting life as his stalwart sidekick. One of the boxes I have unpacked from family hoard was a large one packed with aprons, and some apron-making scraps and some partially finished. It would be fun to do a lecture about what we're talking about here, and just start pulling aprons out of the box as you go along. Here, 20-something, wondering what feminism has ever done for you.....

I am going to break precedence and get personal. My beloved wife is 14 years my junior, what she isn't is a girly girl and she doesn't talk like one either. Personally I can't stand women who talk like little girls and fein some sort of helplessness, it is manipulative act. I don't like indirect questions like "Honey are you going to take out the trash". I prefer the direct approach of please take out the trash, or just take out the trash.

What endured me to my wife when I met her 30 years ago, was her independent, self assertive, capabilities. She is a gourmet cook, a seamstress (learned from her grandmother who was also no nonsense. She is a retired Building Official, a certified electrician, plumber, carpenter and building inspector. She does a better job at what she does than any professional, especially dry walling, none of that taping the joints and covering it with that popcorn spray that modern dry wallers use, it is time consuming, but the finished product is perfect.

She is also a mechanic, and can handle heavy equipment like tractors and back hoes (she was a parks maintenance supervisor and a FEMA contractor for assessing and processing claims after Loma Prieta earthquake of 1989

Yet a more loving and caring person I never met, She is my nurse and my caregiver, We contribute almost equally to the household income from our retirements. I am 83 in remission some 5 years now from brain and lung cancer, left me with some deficits and about the only thing I can do is the dishes, pots and pans (dishwasher helps) burn the cardboard and paper, carry the recyclables and trash to the Transfer Station, mow the property (with a Toro Zero Turn. about 2.5 acres worth, and weed whip around the house. a time consuming effort, given my deficits, but I insist and it makes feel useful, and not like a piece of furniture. She does everything else, there is a lot to do, including repairs and taking care of me.

Sounds like you are a great partnership! Nothing strange to me, I fell madly in love with a Korean War vet about to turn sixty when I was , I don't know: 38 0r 9? He died of dementia Apr. 2019, in amazing care of Cal Vets Home Yountville. So there were some "crazy" years, but many great years of soul-mate connection. So great you share with Hartmanistas all you know what you know.

The right wingers just want more slaves. I grew up on a ranch and saw it all the time. If the animals would not procreate on their own, they would be artificially inseminated. The Republicans suffer from crotch high morals. They conveniently overlook their desire to retroactively abort about 98% of the planet and their greed for money and power. They like to covet everything, including thy neighbor's wife. The religious right are certifiably insane and they suffer from narcissism. The fetuses are better off aborted then having to be around the parasitic lunatics. The fetuses will go back to God all others have to earn their way to heaven not brown-nose their way. Only false religions allow brown nosing.

This is entirely possible, because creepy ridiculous Republicans do not know when to quit. They also don't use their prefrontal cortex to weigh the consequences.

Law professor Maya Manian was on C-Span Friday, and she described what the Republicans are doing is like a game of Jenga. They will keep pulling out a block till all the reproductive rights women deserve crumble. It seems Comstock is that block.

The Vessel is a movie about a group called "Women on Waves". They have fought anti-abortion laws by taking the procedures and pills off-shore. To hell with these right-wing religious crazies. They are going to lose even more races, but not before they make women miserable. My money is on all the ingenious women of the world---they aren't going to let them win.

But we can't just compensate/backstop the tyranny. We have to get the power back. I can't believe I didn't Hartmann-post before about "Other Powers," Barbara Goldsmith 1998. It looks like it's about the "Spiritualism" fad, but maybe that was somebody's idea of marketing, because it is a deep dive into the intertwined people campaigning for abolition, voting rights both Negro and females, and struggling against a world-view about females that nobody today would'nt be appalled by! Susan B. Anthony was not allowed to testify in her own defense when prosecuted for (illegally) voting, not because of fear of her, but because females were not considered competent witnesses in court, just one aspect of their sort of sub-human status, legally! Bless Thom for getting into some of the Comstock horror....

History again is CRITICAL to make available to public, which is being threatened as republicans are BANNING BOOKS, ALL HISTORY and INFORMATION must be available to every lifelong hardworking LAW ABIDING TAXPAYERS. Now to this FOOLISH, DANGEROUS and based on an IGNORANT individual Comstock, who was consumed & CONTROLLED by his OWN PERSONAL IGNORANCE and was consumed by his mother, WHO HATED SEX, to base a NATIONAL LAW that reverses every female of birthing ability is pure and INSANITY, SLAVERY AND IF THIS WASN’T so damaging to America’s females futures for generations to come could be considered a JOKE! To allow the republicans, who are locked into this BACKWARD, DISRESPECTFUL AND DEMONIC process is INJUSTICE pure and simple, however, currently with the MANIPULATION, that RAPIST, PEDOPHILE trump of innocent children boys & girls (9-14), PREFERENCE to CONTROL & THREATEN, PLUS the numerous adult women trumps is accused of sexually assaulting, the recent J. I knew about Comstock and the Comstock Act, but I didn't know he believed that a "visible human-like fetus developed 'within seconds' of sexual intercourse." Anyone else suspect that plenty of anti-choicers still believe something similar?

Where did all these crazies come from? Have they always been there or are they just now feeling emboldened?

Expand full comment

Obviously, always, but they got dragged kicking and screaming into 20th Century, and since Reagan& Weyrich, (see Hartmann) they can just taste almost, almost about to get women back under control, and those brown people etc. Alito didn't even have to go back to the 18th Century English witch-judge (before we supposedly had our revolution, hello?) for Dodd, when right here home grown we have Comstock's "reign of terror" in 1873 ff. I have had details about it and been posting about it since Kacsmaryk dug up the stinking carcass of Comstock, who bragged of burning "134,000 pounds of (what he deemed) 'obscene' books, ...." as special postal agent with arrest and seizure powers. These included books by Dante, Cervantes, Plutarch and Aeschylus, Shakespeare and many Bible selections. Just yesterday, sisters. p.371, "Other Powers" by Barbara Goldsmith, 1998.

Most people don't realize how short a step back in time it is that women had any rights at all. Ladies, we only got to vote in 1920! That was 132 years after the original Constitution was ratified. Black MEN got to vote 50 years earlier. When these "American Taliban" have re-instated the death penalty for government-mandated pregnancy, they will work on no-fault divorce, community property, woman's pay for work belongs to husband or father, legal marital rape, children totally owned by their father should the mother try to get away, no inheritance rights or ownership rights of any kind for females, and here's a bulletin: women weren't competent to testify in court. My "career woman" Mom had to get Dad's signature to co-sign my first PG&E contract, 1975. Just yesterday, sisters.

Yes, high time to look behind the proverbial curtain at Comstock, his Bill, and the appalling legal status of women in society at the time. If you did work that earned a few pennies, those pennies belonged to your daddy or husband. You owned nothing, could inherit nothing. Your husband's sex slave, of course. If you wanted out of marriage, your children were property of their father. Comstock's bill was supported by the male medical establishment, who lost trade to midwives and woman-friendly abortionists. (p.366, "Other Powers" Barbara Goldsmith, 1998) Thom doesn't cover Comstock's special status as "Postal Inspector" including at-whim armed seizures and jailing. And let us not overlook book-burning! Comstock bragged of burning "134,000 pounds of (what he deemed) 'obscene' books, ...." These included books by Dante, Cervantes, Plutarch and Aeschylus, Shakespeare and many Bible selections. (Ibid. p371) Incidentally, you were a little too sub-human to be competent to testify in court, not to mention vote.(1920)
