I have an excellent view of the Front Range of the Rockies, looking north, from my home. I can see the Flat Irons next to Boulder and Longs Peak (14,257') in Rocky Mountain National Park. On a clear day you can see well over a hundred miles. I have lived in this house for 17 years. Every summer the view deteriorates (more and more) with smoke from the forest fires in the West. Many days you cannot see 10 miles. Or even worse. The Front Range is having Red Air Alerts everyday in the Summer. If we were hosting the Olympics right now it would be a major scandal as this air is very bad to breath. Trump said that we need to rake the leaves. There is some truth in that. RMNP does nothing to clean the forests. They want natural growth. But they almost lost the Park last October (we are not supposed to have major fires in October). A good part of it burned. Very little cleaning of forests is done Nationally. I use to live in the pine forests of Northern Arizona. I use to get "Dead or Down" permits to cut fire wood for my home heat. This helped to clean the forest of burnable fuel. (Yes, burning wood puts out carbon, but no more than a dead tree rotting in the forest. Just a lot faster.) I do not know of this in Colorado or if it is done anywhere else. I also have worked in South Korea which (at least) in the South is forested. Everyday, driving to work, I would see forest crews cleaning the Forests of fuel. This also promotes growth of the trees that are left. They had Beetle infestation just like we have had in Colorado. They were doing something about it. In Colorado there are Billions of dead trees (fuel) left from the Beetle infestations. A setup for the disaster that happened last October as 3 major fires burned in Colorado. Thousands of homes were also lost. The view of the smoke was like Armageddon. Our military has thousand of C130's. These can be loaded with roll on roll off tanks for aerial forest fighting. Why are they just sitting there while the west burns? A few years ago when the Air Force Academy was threatened by a forest fire the C130's were used to protect the Academy. Why do we not have a CCC cleaning our forests?
