Your weekly excerpt from one of my books. This week: "The Hidden History of Neoliberalism: How Reaganism Gutted America and How to Restore Its Greatness"
You should be flattered,Thom, because this has to be one of the best Forward's I've read to date. As I've said before,Greg Palast is America's Detective 🔍 and I know he's not only a colleague, but a friend as well. Congratulations on your New Book, your Hidden History book series should be in every classroom in America, and will reStack ASAP 💯👍💙
Has even MSNBC addressed the fact that allegations about voter fraud in Pa were burried by an incoming Republican state AG?
Has MSM ever mentioned the internal election audit that was performed?
“In December 2024, I was personally involved in an NSA‑authorized forensic audit of the 2024 election. Kamala Harris and Tim Walz won—by a wide margin. Trump lost dramatically. There are multiple layers of complexity to this cover‑up, including transnational organized crime syndicates that extend far beyond the United States and our elections. To that point, I work in the human trafficking sector, which intersects with the stolen election(s) and has ties to Trump and Epstein—not to President Biden, Vice President Harris, or Governor Walz, but to the Democrats and other allied interests responsible for burying the audit.” — Adam Zarnowski, ex-CIA agent and author of Jörmungandr
Boy you do have a hard on for MSNBC, I am watching Velshi right now, and he is doing a hell of a job, with his guests of taking on Trump's war on America. And yes they take on Trump's voter intimidation and caging.
What is your problem with them Daniel, that they don't give your concern the highest priority?
Trump is the author of 1,000 outrages, how many hours in a day chasing all of his outrages, some are more important than others, it is a judgement call.
I am not a fan of MSNBC, because of it's morning shows, like Morning Joe, and it's evening shows bloviate over and over the same three bright objects Trump throws out daily,
But it isn't Fox.
And it is ultimately under the control of Brian L Roberts. And the MSM is under the control of Michael and Shari, Redstone, the Newhouse Family, Robert Iger and the Larry Fink.
William,I thought Ali Velchi's rant yesterday about the senior elements of the Democratic party being asleep and unwilling to fight was a message to all of us who are watching the " Neo Nazi" party take over
Watched Meidas touch w/ Anthony Davis and David K.Johnson(teaches law @ RIT and knows Trump well. His assessment to getting to the bottom of the Epstein case,is to find the financial transactions Ron Weydon has been talking about for the past 2 months. There seems to be a pretty broad agreement that Trump was a customer of Epstein's and participated.
Yep, I saw Velshi yesterday and totally agree, though I can understand how long timecentrist Democrats would not like him and condemn MSNBC. There is no doubt that Trump was a consumer of Epstein's offerings, that is why he has 100 agents scouring the Epstein files to scrub his name, and that there are 100 agents that will do that, tells us all we need to know about the FBI.
1. You guys have been brainwashed into missing the forest for the trees. We are a minority with limited power. The end trick would be to get Congressional Republicans to admit that they object to components of the Trump agenda. Convince them to save democracy -- which is the immediate issue.
As long as you attack guys like me -- who actually worked (unlike you guys) at elections and donated our own money and can identify as Dems, you are supporting the enemy.
2. “Those who vote decide nothing. Those who count the vote decide everything.” ― Joseph Stalin. Right now there is no pending election. Congress is back next week. Lots of issues and lots of chances to upend the Trump agenda.
3. It REALLY pisses me off that MSNBC doesnt's isolate and embarass REPUBLICANS who are vulnerable. They seem to pick on straw men like the DNC, which is an amorphus organization responsible to local candidates.
I used to ask them to interview Mario Diaz Balart, MAGA House member, whose brother is Jose, a talking head at MSNBC, NBC and Telemundo. Ask him hoiw he likes MAGA discriminating against Cuabn Americans, for example.
Michael Steele has a personal relationship with virtually every Congressional Republican. Has never, ever, identified common interests, weaknesses, etc.
When Trump indicted in DC, 84 of his loyal and trusted MAGA appointees were willing to come forward. I bet most of them has as much influence on the Congressional Republicans as MAGA Mike, John Thune.
I can go on for a month. With "friends" like this, who needs enemies.
Karen, it requires transparency and decency to reveal the massive unspoken/written message here in your comment - you damn the American Presidents’ government for the same abusive methods you employ, Hartmann, Palast, Veleshi, and others, demanding transparency and decency of them rather than deceitful lies and abuse.
They have their own problems. During Tony Blair's premiership, especially after 9/11, the UK's foreign policy shifted toward an activist, interventionist stance that mirrored American neoconservatism, though this is a subject of debate. Blair's strong alliance with GWB and their shared outlook on fighting Islamist extremism were central to this approach, which was seen as a defining element of his legacy.
They have anti immigrant riots daily.
Trump ally Nigel Farage’s confrontational style mirrors Trump. "Despite high levels of public criticism, Farage has maintained strong support. A recent Ipsos poll ranked him as the most popular party leader in Britain, with 31% of respondents expressing a favorable opinion — higher than the 21% approval rating for Stamer and other prominent politicians."https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nigel_Farage
21% for Starmer? I'm surprised it's that high. How can anybody respect a Labour leader who has accepted a knighthood? SIR Keir? Pardon me while I wipe up the mess my spit take made.
The lesson for today is that Neoliberalism, at the time, seemed to the average schmoe like enlightened ideology. Trumpism today seems to the average MAGA to be enlightened ideology.
Because Americans ignore world history and its lessons, most MAGAs are ill-equipped to connect the dots, and will continue to slip on the recessionary cowpies such isms create and not get woke till their butts fall on their empty wallets. It makes me wonder if America would avoid these disruptions to a peaceful life if public schools actually took teaching history seriously.
Carol, the press is incapable of doing that. The institutions that should have pushed back,Univerities, churches, synogogues have all failed. Wall Street a massive supporter of Trump and the " Neo Nazi" concept have not been criticized. It is time we start talking about these issues.
MSM should have reported about the election interference.
Apparently only NPR covers:
The Democratic National Committee will wrap up its summer meeting today in Minneapolis. It's the DNC's first major gathering since Trump's return to office. During the event's first session, DNC Chair Ken Martin informed his Democratic colleagues that their party needs to prioritize winning future elections over winning arguments about policy and politics. Democrats face an uphill battle trying to gain more power in Washington during the 2026 midterm elections.
🎧 NPR's Stephen Fowler says DNC attendees had big feelings about elections, both in 2024 and beyond. The DNC has been focused on sending money and resources to state-level parties. The Democrats' messaging at the meeting centers on opposing Trump's One Big Beautiful Bill Act, highlighting the partisan redistricting fights happening in several states, and arguing that the president is undermining Congress and the Constitution in a way that is fascist.
And the US? As Hartmann puts it in a subtitle: “America adopted neoliberalism and all I got was this made-in-China Tee Shirt.”
That says it all.. I've stood in awe at China's progress, They have high speed rail, while ours clanks along on 19th Century tracks, kill people at crossing, and trains fall off tracks and spill toxic chemicals,China has done the impossible and built the three gorges dam, and have plans to build the biggest on in the world in Tibet. the build whole cities almost overnight, they even have a bustling middle class
According to Forbes's 2024 list, China has 814 billionaires, which is the most in the world.
They also have a bigger navy than we do, and America has what Musk, Zukerberg, Bezo's, Thiel, Techbros and libertarians.
As long as you have an enlightened dictator with clear goals and objectives and who surrounds him/herself with talented competent people to help avoid the potholes that that risk unintended consequences, your country will thrive.
Sadly, the US is led by a senile egomaniac who surrounds himself with incompetent sycophants who see their job as flattering their fearless ruler, not governing for the people.
I have had the same thoughts Tom. An enlightened dictator, but inevitably power corrupts, and there are always those that want to usurp power
I googled for a list of benevolent dictators: Dictatorships can be economically successful, but they eventual tread on human rights.
The response
"There is no widely accepted list of benevolent dictators because the concept itself is paradoxical; the term "benevolent dictatorship" is often debated and viewed with skepticism, as dictatorial power is inherently based on coercion, not benevolence. However, some historical figures like Park Chung-Hee in South Korea and Deng Xiaoping in China have been cited in academic discussions for presiding over periods of significant economic growth, though this is a complex and controversial topic."
Plato's idea of the Philosopher King (the Republic) influenced the concept of the enlightened despot, as both involved rule by a wise, rational, and educated elite who govern for the good of the people. However, the enlightened despots were absolute monarchs who enacted reforms inspired by the Enlightenment, such as legal and educational improvements, but unlike Plato's ideal, they did not seek to create a true philosopher-led state, often prioritizing their own power over true citizen involvement.
Human nature always takes over,if only it is fear that leads to paranoia, which leads to persecution and a reign of terror. Which is what Trump has in store.
At the same time, China is becoming the world leader - through its solar panel and electric car production - of environmentalism; because of that, it may be able to work its way out of having so many coal-burning power plants, and so lower its carbon footprint considerably.
Yet they are 60 on the happiness scale. I think we all know what they do in the world and at home. Watched a doc on what they did to people in order to build the damns.
Horrible regimes. Slavish work conditions. Empty high-end places constructed where no one lives, but still have homelessness, civic rating system, the Uyghurs, and on and on.
We have done all that as well, but with consent of the people. Perhaps that's worse, but it is changing. They did do it in a short period, and we sure as hell helped finance it.
Yeh, they are brutish and brutal, especially with dissenters, but there is a place between the brutal regime of forced labor like in China and the corruption of government by corporations as in America.
And yep we have financed it. In pursuit of profits for shareholders and million dollar compensation packages for CEO's, American business has built up their competitors.
If it weren't for China we wouldn't have any cell phones or commercial airplanes, they even supply parts for our military. All they have to do is squeeze their sphincter muscle and our planes won't get off the ground. (admitted hyperbole, but you get the point)
Did Greg have the hat on when he attended class? Probably not. It pretty much gives away that he is an investigative reporter. Bless the Hartmanns and Palasts of the world for trying to educate the rest of us. Thom brings the history to the table, and Greg brings "the receipts".
Often economics is called a science without adding that it is a SOCIAL science. Political Economy Studies marries it to politics. Then along comes the psychos like TRump, Putin, or Pinochet and it just involves theft and murder.
All I know is, it is madness to draw from the failures of the past, and it is stupid not to acknowledge what is working in other nations RIGHT NOW. Let's get out there tomorrow and support the people that are doing all the work! See you in the streets.
As my 'op pappy used to say, social science is to science as masturbation is to fornication. E.G. The Friedman Chilean miracle did not work out.
When I think of the Chicago school, I remember former chief judge Richard Posner of the 7th circuit. Once the darling of the Chicago school, a professor there, "Posner is known for his scholarly range and for writing on topics outside of law. In his various writings and books, he has addressed animal rights, feminism, drug prohibition, same-sex marriage, Keynesian economics, law and literature, and academic moral philosophy, among other subjects." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Posner#:~:text=Posner%20is%20known%20for%20his,moral%20philosophy%2C%20among%20other%20subjects.
He was the leader in use of economics to analyze legal history.
However, Posner had a break with Scalia over how to interpret the Constitution, and eventually rethought many (if not most) of his initial positions.
Noam Chomsky's comment at the start here sounds like a description of the current Democratic Party, which might as well be another Milton Friedman Fan Club. It is surely no longer a champion of democracy or a party for citizens who don't want to join in as cheer leaders for Netanyahu-run land grabs, genocides and suppression of American First Amendment rights.
I have no doubt, either, from my experience of more than two decades of 24/7 surveillance and the silence of others, that they promulgated an ugly idea which embraces, ‘greed is good, that uncontrolled greed is even better, even if it leads to mass misery.” Those who would take the time to manufacture slander of me have garnered more money than they ever could have imagined.
The press could have reported the facts - the direct effect on the economy and institutions that the ideology of Neoliberalism was having in real-time. So I disagree with your conclusion about the press. I suppose I will need to research what you mean, as you haven’t provided enough detail about your point. The 10:30 timestamp I see here, along with your name, David, could very well be code for David Morgan, who is using a card in this cabal’s vendetta against me via surveillance. That would take some time for me to explain his criminal behavior.
I look forward to reading this book. I have studied neoliberalism for the past few years. As much as
I agree with Thom, I have one thought to add to the discussion: NEOLIBERALISM IS A BAD TERM.
Neoliberalism sounds like some new school of mainstream Democratic Party thought. For organizers, the term confuses things. There was a Neo-con. Isn't this just a Neo-lib? A new just slightly left of center liberal faction or theory?
One definition of fascism says, "Fascism is the open, terroristic dictatorship of the most reactionary elements of capitalism." That's Neoliberalism.
Neoliberalism originated in the 1930s among European intellectuals as a philosophical response to the economic failures of classical liberalism during the Great Depression and the rise of totalitarianism. Thinkers like Friedrich von Hayek gathered at events like the 1938 Lippmann Colloquium and the 1947 Mont Pèlerin Society to re-establish the value of free markets and individual freedom against planned economies. This initial intellectual movement paved the way for the political and economic policies later associated with the term, particularly after the stagflation of the 1970s and the end of the Cold War.
Intellectual Origins (1930s-1940s)
Rejection ofaissez-faire:
Neoliberal thinkers emerged from classical liberalism but were critical of its pure laissez-faire approach, which they believed had failed during the Great Depression.
Response to Totalitarianism:
Neoliberalism was also a defense of liberal democratic values against the totalitarianism and fascism of the era, as well as against Soviet communism.
Key Conferences:
Lippmann Colloquium (1938): Organized in Paris, this event, named after the journalist Walter Lippmann, helped establish neoliberalism as a geopolitical doctrine focused on a transnational, free-market order.
Mont Pèlerin Society (1947): Founded by Friedrich von Hayek, this society brought together economists, historians, and philosophers to address their concern that "the central values of civilization are in danger".
Evolution to Policy (Post-1970s)
Critique of the Post-War Consensus:
The intellectual foundations laid in the earlier decades gained traction following the failure of post-war economic policies and the stagflation of the 1970s.
Focus on Free Markets:
The core of neoliberalism involves liberating individual entrepreneurial freedoms, promoting free markets and free trade, and emphasizing strong private property rights.
Reduced Government Intervention:
The core policy goal is to reduce government intervention in the economy, including deregulation, privatization, and reduced spending on public services, allowing markets to find their own solutions.
