I live in the UK, where we have just had the Queen's Jubilee four day weekend.

The Royal family were out and about the whole weekend and although there would have been some protection around them, it was minimal. They mixed with the public and stood on open stages and balconies in front of thousands of people, without glass screens or other forms of protection. Nothing.

Why? Because the UK is so different to the US. The UK looks on much of the US with a sad face, and wonders just what it is you are all doing with guns.

A well regulated militia doesn't murder children.

How positively disgusting that Black people having guns is more motivating than saving the lives of innocent children and teenagers.

Even though I live in California, I did not realize that we were somewhat protected by good gun laws. Thanks.

Why isn't the Preamble of the Constitution quoted more? It lays out very succinctly and fairly specifically the purpose of our Constitution. The most pertinent concepts enumerated in the preamble related to gun safety would be: insuring domestic tranquility and promoting the general welfare. Establishing justice, providing for the common defense and securing the blessings of liberty aren't far off the mark either as justification for stricter gun laws. Is the Preamble just a bunch of words we're not really supposed to pay much attention to, or is it supposed to be our guiding principles?

Thanks again, Thom for more good history and facts of the gun issue. Buffalo on May 14th was the turning point for me, and then Uvalde on May 24th intensified my commitment, to spend the rest of my life working to save American democracy, and then to strengthen it. I started a new blog, ohioprogressivelife.com on May 15th to begin getting people where I live (Ohio) to start discussing our current crises and the future, as a first step toward political involvement. I posted today about "disunion", which I now believe is going to become reality in a few years.

We must frame this as everyone's right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness against the invalid idea that an individual has the right to protect themselves by any means possible (tanks, grenades, missiles, fully automatic guns, etc).

Dr. Phil came up with another frame that needs to be in the mix. We have to work for prevention not just intervention. That would be a "red flag" AND better security approach.

Someone REALLY needs to educate the members of Congress that lack firearms knowledge.   That's necessary, because they would be so much more effective at arguing and showing the public they are informed. When you become a representative or senator you have to learn a whole bunch of boring and hateful things. I'd advise a trip to the range, but I fully understand that some people can't imagine even touching a weapon.
