Great analogy. It's too bad that more people seem to understand and care about football than they do about national politics. Bread and circuses..without the bread. And there's an old New Yorker cartoon that catches the spirit of this essay. It shows two men coming out of a building in front of a crowd of reporters and photographers. One is hunched down with his hat held over his face. The other is saying, "No, no Joe. You're a commissioner now!"

The NFL analogy has long been on my list of ways to illustrate why rules matter, and why they must be enforced equally with no special consideration given to any particular entity. I'm glad Thom took it on.

The "Salary Cap" rule in the NFL is one of the greatest examples of how to keep the game fair and enjoyable to watch. It's not perfect, but at the very least provides a barrier from big money pouring into any one team year after year.
