With respect to the flood of rants about free speech from the MAGA pols and "influencers," somebody should remind America about something we all learned on the grammar school playground. Speech is never free.
There are always consequences for what we say - positive and negative. If you say something that inspires, amuses, or educates, you are likely to be praised. In contrast, if what you say offends another person, they are likely to punch you in the nose, or stop doing business with you (Musk DOGE), or, in rare instances, get so riled that they try to kill you.
Democracy depends upon free speech so voters can better weigh the pros and cons of proposed or current legislation. In contrast, fascism thrives on suppressing free speech - especially fact-based free speech. Stealing elections hinges on voters being uninformed. So, it is important for autocrats to terminate all research that might produce evidence of leadership failures that might risk robbing the Führer of his power (and it is always "his" power in the case of modern dictatorships).
Charlie Kirk was a professional GenZ groomer. The MAGA empire viewed him as being so good at encouraging fascist notions among young voters that the Alt-Right made him a multi-millionaire well before reaching the age of 30. How much were you worth at age 30?
Kirk was eloquent in spewing violent fascist rhetoric in ways that did not rile up audiences to the point of violence at his rallies --- until one day, of course. When you play with fire, you risk getting burned. When you advocate, as Kirk did, for universal gun ownership by justifying the danger of murders as a reasonable price to pay for personal freedom in a democracy that you are trying to turn into an autocracy, such speech actually can encourage murders.

According to the NYT article published the day before the shooting, the reason Fuentes had a beef with Kirk is because he’s not far right enough. Sounds like Fuentes claims his group is somehow being framed, but it’s right there in black and white, so it seems a bit late for that, no?
Either way, it will be great to watch his widow, who has dedicated herself to continuing his work, relentlessly demanding the release of the Epstein files like Charlie was doing until he couldn’t any longer.
