One thing not discussed here is the failed War on Drugs. A lot of the crime in my area are related to the explosion in opiate addiction, which, of course, is all tied up in the problem of inequality and exploitation of the population. It's an important tool the oligarchs and racist politicians have exploited to their benefit.

America has always been obsessed with crime and punishment. It's one of the issues used to create an advantage during political competition. Inequality is discussed, but it's usually after someone has paid a terrible price. Kudos to Thom for trying to tackle this subject; it's mind-boggling how many factors go into this equation.

We absolutely need to shift our obsession with criminal accountability and start to hold the titans and oligarchs accountable for their undue influence in politics and their failure to pay their way. Let's make available the basics and the opportunities needed for we the peoples' "general welfare". It would contribute to fulfilling the mission we put into writing for this amazing nation.

I have a solution for the homeless. In Japan they have hotel rooms that are modular units and are very small. I described it as you could sit on the bed and reach anything in the room. You literally can live in a 10' x 10' room and have a kitchen and bathroom. These can be built in one location and shipped all over. They can be erected in short time. Another simple solution is more public rest rooms and/or porta potty's. I work part time in CA and public rest rooms are hard to find. Restaurants have locked rest rooms. All to keep the homeless out. People have to go eventually so they do it on the streets. The best solution is to tax people like Jeff Bezos who pays no income tax and can afford to fly to outer space. https://www.propublica.org/article/the-secret-irs-files-trove-of-never-before-seen-records-reveal-how-the-wealthiest-avoid-income-tax
