My father-in-law (1906-86) lived in Berlin until he made it to America in early 1939. According to Hans in the 1920s people laughed at Hitler as an uncouth small time politician who would go nowhere. In the early '30s they laughed at him as a Chancellor whose big dreams would come to nothing. Then they stopped laughing. Is America in its Weimar Republic stage? Only if we let it be.
