Thank you for this. I have been very distressed as a woman who fought for women’s rights in the 70’s at how our culture, world , has absolutely refused to address the elephant in the room. The masculine toxicity of our world. For thousands of years it has determined what happens with little if no input from women. It accomplishes this through violence to women. Rape is everywhere and yet it is not something that men seem to talk about with each other except apparently, as entertainment. Mister Hartmann, you have nailed the crux of the problem, toxic masculinity. We need balance and that means good men calling out the bad and a full partnership with women if we are to survive.

"What we need instead is a redefinition of masculinity: strength defined by compassion, power defined by service, leadership defined by respect."

Damn right! This column is brilliant!
