A friend of mine despairs that there is anything that can be done to stop Trump, now that he holds all the cards in government. But the one card he doesn't hold is the truth--we hold that one. Ironically, it's the trump card. But it's only worth its value if we play it continually, constantly, insistently. Thanks, Thom, for this timely history lesson!
Hand recounts! Stephen Spoonamore has written several articles on Substack.com about obvious hacking. It makes sense. Yet neither the media nor any of the Substack writers (except Thom Hartmann’s show where I learned of him) are talking about this.
I have written to Harris, Biden, Jeffries, Pelosi, Waltz and even Harris’s husband. Nothing.
Spoonamore contends a hand recount in the swing states, MI, WI , AZ & NC would tell the truth.
He helped expose the fraudulent 2004 election in Ohio, so he is credible. Can anyone help?
He encourages people in PA to go to their precincts & request a hand recount. Time is running out.
He does not hold the school board card. Run for school board on a save democracy platform and the light of democracy will blind those who want it gone. Our corrupt schools with rubber stamping school boards paved the way for Trump. Learn about this at WhiteChalkCrime.com where you can hear teacher whistleblowers. Once you understand how the corruption works in education you’ll understand that getting on boards is our key to saving democracy.
Thank you so much for this article. It is a necessary article about the power of the pen in the face of an aspiring tyrant. I will be teaching about this in one of my high school history classes in the next few weeks.
There may be a literary term for the phenomenon of reporting on a cogent reformational treatus that, by its own thoroughness and verity, itself becomes that of which it writes. If there isn't, there should be. Today's entry by Thom should be distributed and slid under the doors of all Anericans from coast to coast. If fact, the game plan for resistance and change needed to combat the fascist coup is comprehensively provided in this remarkable offering by Thom. Show me anything written, disseminated, reported on by anybody to this point to this day even approaching it's affectiveness. I am not one disposed to embracing the notions, the pleas, the promised salvations for HOPE, HOPE, HOPE, especially those maudlinly expressed when hope is such a futile gesture. Here, in this article, we have hope
I am less optimistic about a resistance in our age when the pamphleteer has been replaced by AI on social media. The speed of misinformation will likely overcome any rational resistance.
Any ray of optimism or encouraging news at this point is appreciated and greatly needed. I welcome the thought of people fighting back. But I do not have confidence that the people living now will be as determined, feisty, or acutely aware as the people in the newly formed United States were so soon after the founding. Pamphlets delivered hand-to-hand are a quite different proposition from Substack newsletters which are read primarily by people who are not averse to reading or to valid arguments and information. By coincidence, I am reading famed historian David McCollough's biography of John Adams by that name. Trump is no John Adams as Thom points out. I have only read a little over 100 pages so far. However, Adams was from very humble origins and was well-read and did have a conscience. His great ambition was to be recognized and loved by the people, not to be super-rich and powerful, according to the early accounts in the book and I believe he at least had a desire to do what was best for the country, unlike Trump. I will copy here a letter I sent to the Las Vegas Review Journal which is a conservative rag. It is unlikely they will print it. It is as follows:
Trump is not Hitler. Hitler was a much younger man who did not have immense wealth, including that of the world’s richest plutocrat behind him, along with many other billionaire oligarchs and half of a Congress willing to do his bidding without asking questions. Hitler did not have nuclear weapons at his disposal. Hitler did not despise his own country and fifty percent of its citizens. He did not have the world’s strongest economy and strongest military. Hitler did not have a 900-page blueprint for destroying checks and balances and each and every one of his nation’s institutions from within overnight, starting from day one. He did not have 40 years of intense right-wing media propaganda preparing his cult followers to hate their own (liberal) countrymen and any outsiders of a different race or religion.
Trump is not Hitler. In six months you will wish he were. End of letter.
We need to be realistic and not dismiss the horrors that were faced by those people who were imprisoned under Adams rule or imagine that much worse things are planned by Trump and his henchmen. Polly Anna's fantasies and the Primrose Path are not likely outcomes here.
Although I can see some definite similarities during Adam’s presidency to our present situation, I would also point out that not only are our demographics distinctly dissimilar, considering there were only a handful of states on the Eastern Seaboard at that time period, but the population, which was sparse unlike today, was in addition not mesmerized by social media or FOX.
We had the availability of Substack both during the election and before. Do I need to remind that it wasn’t enough? We already had one term of stressful horror with Trump obviously without it making a meaty impression on those in the Middle and Southern states.
I mean, what the hell does it take to wake people up, anyway? Over 76 million people dismiss all evidence placed in their lap that this former person was convicted of felonies, on and on, etc.,etc. The list of his misdeeds seems to go on forever, but to no avail. A great deal of the South and Midwest still defend him. It’s not from lack of information availability they CHOSE to view and believe FOX AND X. They LIKE his policies and politics, and they are obviously still willing to flirt with this level of danger with our collective futures.
Many like Bernie, but hate socialism. They like Trump but don’t trust big business or the rich. They want to clean up the swamp but trust known and convicted felons, cheats and those who promote either peaceful or violent overthrow of our way of life and Constitution.
Perhaps we need to add to the list of social injustices, disparities and grievances that at least 76 million by in large Southern or Midwest citizens who voted for our newly elected president also endures a distinct lack of reasoning power.
The ironies and inconsistencies abound. Good explanations which clearly point to significant and demonstrable ideas and theories are hard to come by. If Trump has the kind of power he claims to have, he will shut down Substack and anything like it quickly. You are right that many people have chosen Trump and fascism because that is what they want or believe in because of ignorance and contempt for others, including or especially, liberals.
Thom seems to believe that if we just had brought back civics and history classes in public schools that everyone (or some appreciable proportion of students) would therefore be conversant with how government works in a democracy and this situation could thereby have been avoided. That is utter nonsense. What people need to see and comprehend is how a demagogue gains attention, approval, and power and how his interests and actions conflict with their own interests and the welfare of the people generally. People need to know the difference between real facts, data, statistics, and information with regard to a variety of issues, and the kind of manipulated information, lies, and deception which Fox and other right-wing media and bought-off politicians dish out by the trainload. People need to have a fundamental capacity for discerning motives and human behavior and the ability to think critically. I’ve said it here at least a dozen times; one does not learn critical thinking in a class, and a class in critical thinking is a waste of time for the most part because it is not a skill that can be taught as one teaches algebra or history. Furthermore, to gain authentic knowledge in history, algebra, or any other subject students must be fully engaged VOLUNTARILY, and must be able to get beyond abstraction and academic role-playing to incorporate (create) knowledge which is useful and personal. Thom is stuck in reverse when it comes to education and schooling and sees everyone who criticizes schools as a reactionary trying to destroy schools. That is very sad. The first and most critical issue is compulsory attendance law and the authoritarian bureaucracy it necessitates. The only possible outcomes are mis-education, demoralization, anti-intellectual attitudes, sclerotic policies and practices, and frustration.
Trump has been invoking part of the Alien and Sedition Acts to threaten recrimination and prosecution of his opponents. At the time of XYZ, the French Revolution was ongoing and our Revolutionary French allies from 1776-1783 were viewed as aristocrats by the French mobs. By that time, the French Revolution had turned on Robespierre, the most important figure of the French Revolution, executed by guillotine in Paris, France, on July 28, 1794. Napoleon was First Consul from 1799 to 1804. Initially a "republican" he became emperor in 1804.
Adams had aristocratic tendencies. Jefferson accused him of insanity and marital infidelity, via James T. Callender. He accused him of attempting to make war with France to curry favor with the British.
Not Just the New Englander's Daniel, the planters of the Carolina's had no interest in the revolution either
Unlike the Virginia's who had the obligatory tradition of making an aliyah to England at least once, and the more trips one made the greater demonstration of wealth and status.
The planters of the Carolina's had no problem with England, as it was England that bought their cotton, and thus gave them a "price doesn't matter" attitude towards the monopoly of the East India Company, and the resulting Hat and Stamp Acts.
They had no interest in the revolution until the Brits landed in Charleston and the officers dispossessed them of their homes, to use as officer quarters.
The Mel Gibson movie the Patriot is a fairly accurate portrayal of the time.
The Virginia planters were of another mind, They envisioned themselves as the nobility in the new America.
Where has the media been for fifty years? Those who subscribe to neo-liberalism began with Reagan and Powell of the Supreme Court's manifesto and blatantly used derogatory rhetoric of a 'culture war" as their political platform, avoiding talking about policy. Yes, we have been here and are here and will be here because Americans and those with power have allowed it. At this point, those billionaires have won.
I have never used racist terms the government dictated in World War II, but my parents did. We never picked up using the terms because we did not have a purpose in mind. The other day, due to an onslaught for 2 decades from multiple groups of races targeting me (y,s by groups) with cars, on foot, and in my house because the government has allowed this despite my appeals that they stop them, a young Asian driver in a 'rocket' engine car sped out of an alley towards me to which I reacted by moving a hard right to escape a collision. I sideswiped a white vehicle, and we contacted my insurance company to repair the damage.
I used the term' a rice rocket car' commonly used for dragster cars and motorcycles—not racist—to help the insurance adjustor 'see' my experience. I also called it a Kamazi move—neither was this racist, but the action of the driver's car was like that. Unfortunately, the vehicle I sideswiped owned by a young Japanese man whom I did not have in mind when I used those terms. I did not come in contact with this gentleman - just over the phone. I learned the terms from young people who are into cars and drag racing.
The adjustor, Ruben Martinez, decided to pick from a list a term to describe the incident that labeled me negligent when it was a defensive move. In addition, he is in Arizona and won't return my call (I am in California, SD). The owner of Farmers here decidedly allowed him to label me as such and suggested I used racist terms. I pointed out that cars and motorcycles don't have feelings. In addition, I googled the terms as common terms for racing units. Clearly, the PC patrol is out of control. There is a great deal of slander being used to discredit me. Carol Heasley
Thanks Thom. One does not have to be a King Balshazzar to see the handwriting on the wall, but one does have to clear the cobwebs from the mind and eyes, or have mental cataract surgery.
Fascinating! It has been a bumpy ride from the beginning. I have to reflect, though, that Jefferson's ascendency into the presidency in 1800 took 36 votes to resolve. Since the electoral college was tied, it went to the House. Federalist Maryland was somehow persuaded to drop out so that there were more of the Dem Republicans remaining to vote. I believe it is suspected that Jefferson made a deal to get this outcome. In his presidency, he instituted some of the Federalist ideas--like a national bank, I think. Will we have to make some concession to the Magas?
Shea. Some, like white, heterosexual cisgendered, that don't have a digital/electronic trail of anti fascism, may get by safely, by making concessions to MAGA (meaning submit in mind and body)Kevin Roberts did say that the 2nd revolution will be bloodless, if the left allows it.
But there will be the Sophia Scholls and associates of the White Rose, and those who have no option because they don't fit intothe MAGAt protected class.
Good history lesson for me. Thank you. BUT -where are today’s phamleters? Substack? for me Substack can be a little complicated and I don’t think the average person, especially the average person who voted for Trump would read/look/or listen to Substack. I am thinking about Thom’s frequent comments about getting some “airwaves” to broadcast into the RED STATES. Promote independent newspapers (digital and paper forms) ?. And I think will make some kind of mess that will hurt the average citizen and somehow that eventual TRUTH must inform citizens. I just hope it happens before he and his minions shut down all our democratic channels.
Tom, I love you but your unbridled hatred of John Adams continues to amaze. You badly mischaracterize him. And your admiration for unrepentant slaveholder Jefferson contrasts this amazingly. Adams Prevented war with France after the XYZ affair, and even Jefferson admitted this. Adams certainly did Not have the Federalists under his control: Hamilton hated him and the Federalist caucus wanted war. Federalists in Congress created the Alien and Sedition Acts, Adams, as Gore Vidal has written, had the bad sense to sign them. Yes, and he allowed people to be jailed, to his discredit. Fascist? Nonsense! Your best example of a president getting us into war, and exceeding what the Framers intended, besides LBJ, was James Polk. You do not even mention that. Even the great Madison eased us into a war under Congressional pressure.
