The state-sanctioned demonization of all queer people would lead to an explosion in violent hate crimes. And same-sex couples who’ve been married legally for years would suddenly lose their marital status, along with the rights and benefits that come with it.
In another example, you would see public education gutted, and children taught only a sanitized, state-approved, anti-history, anti-science curriculum that officially censors discussions of race, sexuality, equality, the civil rights movement, women’s rights, unions and so much more. Add to that mandatory prayers and Bible study. School would look nothing like what we have now.
Women’s lives, too, would be utterly transformed under American-style fascist rule. Reversals in federal law would take away their rights to equal education and employment; girls in school would be shunted away from any kind of career path and incentivized to be stay at home mothers. With abortion outlawed in all cases and contraceptives made inaccessible, horrific suffering targeting only females, including maternal deaths and suicides, would be commonplace.
No, I don’t think the extremists waiting in the wings would be content with an America that looks basically the same, just with some strongman worship added in. These are people who take great joy in literally harming, harassing, attacking, and “sticking it” to anyone outside their cultish tribe. It would be a very visible, enraging, hellish transformation.
Completely agree here with your assessment, with one caveat: I think Thom did qualify that straight, White men who would be the ones least able to discern a difference. Everything else you describe, and more, is likely under an Ameri-fascist government. Most terrifying is that our high-GDP, nuclear-armed country would be in a position to pressure other countries we deal with to operate similarly, with a bellicose posture emboldened by radioactive warheads.
