Republicans (mostly, for the last forty years - since Reagan, basically) have seen to it that Americans are too comfortable and lazy ("dumbed down," if you prefer) to apply vigilance, either internal, and especially not eternal. Citizens have been taught (but not educated) to value money, but not democracy. Undemocratic as it may appear - and if it's not too late - we have to a better job of "indoctrinating" the meaning and value of democracy through teaching, and practicing a much more concentrated regimen of civic involvement.
