Nobody is asking the bigger question: “Why would a professional, lifelong politician and master tactician like Mitch McConnell make such a huge mistake?”
Mitch publicly declared that Trump was guilty of insurrection and told the big lie about the election. But, Liz Cheney and Mitt Romney are taking the heat. If passed, he and other Republicans will take credit for the infrastructure bill. Remember what he did to the Merrick Garland Supreme Court nomination and then the Amy Barrett nomination and got away with it. He is the devil in flesh.
I am not inside his head but it seems McConnell just wants pure power and will say and do anything that gives it to him. He certainly has zero empathy for people who need help. In many ways he, and those like him, are much more dangerous than Trump, who was incoherent, largely directionless and often ineffective. But as a 1-2 team they were and are a serious threat to America. One stirs people up and raises money, the other actually directs that anger and energy towards destructive ends. Hence McConnell stays with him even seeing that Trump will betray anyone. I suppose he bets that like the old movie, "Dracula Has Risen From the Grave", The Donald will return.
President Eisenhower was a world citizen and a patriotic American. Like so many others, he put it all on the line for the United States and humanity. He wouldn't recognize the current Republican Party. Hell, I'm not sure Romney does at this stage either.
Donald Trump is a sociopath. He may own property around the world but he is not in and of the real world. People are only objects to him. His biggest on-going construction project is his fake version of the world that serves only him. This is who the Republican Party unleashed on literally EVERYONE.
Republicans absolutely do believe the free market will sort out the winners and losers and that is how it should be. In case you hadn't noticed, "magical thinking" is very popular these days. I too think that some of them sincerely fell for Trump's magic act. The others like McConnell are only sincere about what benefits their wallet. These two factions of the Republican Party deserve each other. Trump is proof that if there was any goodness left within the party, Romney would have been at that state convention taking a vote to oust the Trumpsters. A pox on their house, oh wait, that already happened.
To have a reasonable chance at poker, chess, football, business, politics, war, or life in general requires as much as humanly possible an accurate awareness of other people's true intentions. The importance of getting a good read on one's opponents is stating the obvious, of course, but actually succeeding at it is seldom easy ...unless you're trying to figure out the simplistic mindset of average Joe Republican.
Divining a true-blue believer's ulterior motives is fairly straightforward. Being that they are constantly bombarded with bullshit day in and day out, it's a reasonably sure bet that the 180-degree opposite of whatever wingers usually babble on and on about is closer to the truth. Let's be honest, damn near everything they say and think is based on the manufactured fear and hate of "others" and on an implanted sense of self-righteousness -- the self-deluded "correctness" of a skewed worldview that defies any introduction of irrefutable, empirical evidence to the contrary. Ask Liz Cheney and Mitt Romney; they quickly stunk up the whole crowded elevator with just little truth bombs.
That McConnell, Trump, McCarthy, Graham, Greene, Boebert, Cruz, Hawley, Ron Johnson, and the rest of the goofballs in the Republican clown car, are still the headline-grabbing "thought leaders" for the various factions of shameless liars says a lot.
Whenever a public sector decision-maker chooses to to something stupid (i.e., he should know better) it's usually because he's incompetent, corrupt (or even some taint of both). Deciding that trickle down theory is a good idea to promote the general welfare falls in that category.
Politicos are continually angling for the next election. It's a survival instinct of their species even more important than sex (except for the Gaetz offshoot, which is thankfully going extinct). So what's up with the death wish, like whales beaching themselves? It's a testament to how much the Republican thought virus has mutated beyond the less toxic Eisenhower strain.
Besides a fractured and shrinking base of gullible fools, who is left to believe their bullshit? Who will forget failed leadership on a monumental scale and a bungled response to a deadly pandemic that not only killed hundreds of thousands of people but also cost millions upon millions of jobs and more than a lost year of normal life? And an insurrection to cap it all off, for chrissake! Who CAN forget (no matter how hard we try) a twice-impeached, psychotic madman relegated to mumbling to himself in exile who was once our face to the world? My God.
