The middle class was a threat only to the power of the “ruling class”, whether that was in old England or the United States. A strong middle class is actually essential to a strong Democracy. It provides stability. And a strong Democracy is the last thing the oligarchy wants; it gives power to We the People. As we are seeing today, as the GOP denies that America ever was a Democracy!
