Brilliant! He should also withhold that money even if the Catholic Church wasn't considering withholding Communion.

And how about if the Catholics withhold communion from Child Rapists and such instead. I say this with the authority of being a former Catholic Alter Boy.

Amen, ironically.

These are truly chilling, first-hand accounts of interactions with the brokers of supreme authority: Presidents and Senators from the State of God. When I say "supreme authority", I do so with the understanding that religion (Catholicism in particular) has been the longest standing power structure in human history, and it remains one of the most influential establishments to this day. It is the original disinformation superhighway. Salvation is the pitch, obedience is the price.

The truths that Jesus spoke of, his actions, his intentions, and most importantly (in terms of power) the popularity of his messaging made him a threat to the status quo. That's why he was assassinated. We've seen this play out since his time with numerous moral leaders. Those who gain traction against systems of domination become marginalized or eliminated - but the populism and symbolism become usurped for the good of evil.

And as believers of Jesus Inc. await the second coming, they miss the fact that at any given moment, there are many Jesus' among us - he's and she's and everything in between living a message of decency and basic human dignity.

The spirit of humankind truly is eternal.

I love Thom's stories and astute observations about his encounters with the "high and mighty". You can tell everything you need to know about someone's character by how they use their power. Parents, bosses, teachers, politicians, corporations, and religious leaders come to mind.

Once upon a time, I worked for a Catholic family that gave me one day a week off. My friend said their motto was: "We're closed on Sunday to worship our money!" In all fairness, I liked the part of the family I worked for...the others not so much. Truly, every one of the religious sects have had their money demons in human form. That is another reason to stop making exemptions for them.
