This is amazing! I live in the Seattle area and we’ve never bought a generator (every year we discuss it). I think our next vehicle will be an EV. This should be part of the marketing, especially in the Pacific Northwest!!

"... sitting in the dark complaining that they can’t follow Trump on his Nazi-infested social media site..."

And probably saying that the power never went out when TRUMP was president!! Joe Biden cut our power!! 🤣

I appreciate your girl scout’s motto be prepared. Getting down to basics is so refreshing in a time of almost total governmental errors that never address the most basic human needs shelter, food, clothing, healthcare, etc. nothing is kitchen table despite the blah, blah, blah from all the rotten governmental media and stingy resources. We the people suffer through. Those that can afford to be self resourceful such as me and thee are fortunate but many in this nation are not and feel it acutely. We need affordable housing and it is dire here and elsewhere. The solution on MLK’s national day is a rededication to basic needs and equality. How Thomas can we little people facilitate that in a nation that misuses our tax dollars so badly?

Shame on you. Israel always has helped the Palestinians; they just prefer to hate Jewish people and allow Hamas to control them and keep themselves in misery

Very interesting. I'm lucky, so far I haven't lost power during our arctic blast. My old Leaf isn't set up to power my house, but I noticed an orange cord running from inside my neighbor's Rivian truck back to his house (people just a couple of blocks from me were without power), so he must have been doing just what you suggest.

Thom, sorry (literally) to say that "most EVs" would have to include Teslas, like my own, but alas, Tesla, as with the plurality of EV models, do NOT provide a bidirectional charge port. Tesla has said they would do that in the future, but their disincentive to do so is that they also produce a separate house-power option in their PowerWall product.

There IS a way to get a couple kW out of a Tesla by using an AC inverter coupled to the 12-volt battery charger terminals under the rear seat. I've done that to power towed Halloween floats for two years running.

Thanks, Dean. I’ll change most to many…

I live in a condo. We can't even have generators for the individual units. In order to have an EV, we'd have to pay for installation and charges for a separate hookup. and the car couldn't logistically be attached to the electric feed to our unit.

I wrote just yesterday about how in the "sunshine state" ironically sunshine is not part of the commons.

Carolyn. I am sorry you feel that way. You need to be specific in your lose use of terms. Are you referring to Bibi and the right wing of OIstaels right wing government that a majority of Israelis and Arab Palestinians and Arab Israelis along with women and gays are protesting when you say “Zionist?” There is such a thin line between the antisemitism implicit in adopting this politizied vocabulary. Just as the term “genocide” is a trigger against rational discussion of a situation that we do not live in. The fact remains clear—Israel was attacked by Hamas and its civilian population savaged and the hostages are still not released. Bibi and the right wing facilitated this. The war played right into their hands at a time of dissent in Israel. But let Thom and others here debate the issue from a foundation of fact. Your are addressing over 3,500 years of blood and soil and displacements.

The whole country now has a path of batteries for power at need. An amazing outcome. With a basic income most people could then impact society without trying to make money on the backs of the poor that cannot afford the treatments and cures that would allow themselves to become the best of society that they also can be. When will be love ourselves to have such an outcome?

As this time EV chargers are not bidirectional. I am a retired master electrician that has been interested in solar since Carter installed panels on the WH. You are looking at a circuit the size of an electric range when hooking up a vehicle to the grid for backup. You may trickle some power off your EV but running a house is not possible at this time. Ask major manufacturers of EV charging systems and that is what they will tell you. Running our homes during grid failures is a great idea but we are not there yet.

Dan. It is not clear what you mean when you say "running a house is not possible at this time"

Mr. Hartman was clear that he has energized only 6 circuits. Not his whole house. If by saying "running a house" you mean the entire house; then perhaps you are correct. After all, you are a master electrician so you would know better than the rest of us. But don't you think you are being a bit misleading when you say"running a house?" It is a fact that Mr. Hartman has already hooked up 6 circuits to run at least part of his house. I think he has been very clear on this point. Furthermore, I myself have a friend who has done it with solar panels and batteries and inverter. There are no doubt many who have done the same.

Mr. Hartmann did what is called a partial home backup. He moved six breakers into a separate electrical panel. He said he spent a couple hundred dollars for the panel, plus more for labor. Mr. Hartmann also mentioned manually switching breakers to isolate backup panel. Very DIY without an automatic transfer switch, which a electrical inspectors dislikes. As for Tesla and other solar manufacturers using an EV as the home's battery backup. The circuiting is not designed for a temporary additional battery backup. As I said before it's not capable of reversing electron flow at this time. The controller is the main component in a solar system. It has an automatic transfer switch and input/outputs for solar, batteries, generators and loads. In the future I see manufacturers creating another port with load shedding for EVs. Where only 50 amperes, typical size of EV circuit, can only be drawn off at any one moment. The power cord to plug in your EV is only designed for 50 amperes. And the size of your branch circuit conductors will need to be resized.

Come spring I plan on bringing my home into the 21st century. The solar panels will be the split cell type. Using microinveters for the DC to AC coupling. Forget about string inverters and optimizers. There will be a separate electrical panel to consolidate solar circuits. A controller and a10kw battery. A Span electrical span for my load shedding control. And a communication network for all components to keep connected. If you are interested in solar may I suggest you look into Enphase and Span.

I hope my comments help clear up how Mr Hartmann's DIY installation works and what a good install should be. Thanks for your reply.

With a gas stove, hot water heater and furnace, you could run a whole house. Fans don't use too much electricity.
