If you want to know who Republicans in Congress value, look at who they protect and who they let die. By any reasonable standard, America has taken a very wrong and and very tragic path
This is so very difficult to read. This paragraph alone SHOULD move people... Why doesn't it is what I wonder... "A recent study reported in The American Journal of Medicine found that, in 2017, 'there were 144 police officers who died in the line of duty [including for medical reasons] and about 1,000 active duty military throughout the world who died [of all causes], whereas 2,462 school-age children were killed by firearms.'” This is preventable, everyday tragedy here in the U.S. ...
Sometimes when I'm substitute teaching in a public school they do a required lockdown practice. I tell the kids that I grew up during the Cold War and we had to jump under our desks for protection from an atomic bomb. They usually say we were nuts, I agree but add that everyone was scared of The Bomb...and it didn't happen! Then I add that active shooters are more common but still rare and they shouldn't live their lives in fear. Maybe that helps them keep some perspective on the world. Kids are given too far too much to be afraid of, and that's no way to grow up.
Americans have been in denial and stupid about this subject for a very long time. This is from the Legends of America website: "Firearms were the second leading cause of emigrant injury and death. Because of the need to hunt and fear of Indian attacks, wagon trains were filled with more firepower then they would ever need. One Oregon Trail expedition had a 72-wagon train that carried 260 pistols and rifles, nearly a ton of lead, and over a thousand pounds of gunpowder. Most of the travelers had no training or experience with firearms. Consequently, countless people accidentally shot themselves or others."
Could anything be more offensive than the Massie family photo? But that's just what they were going for. They want to own the libs, and it doesn't matter who dies. These Republicans will tell you they believe in helping the mentally ill and barring them from gun ownership. But, when it's time to pay for health care or agencies to do the checks, it's sorry we just can't afford those! Help the victims? Out of the question!
I heard the somber tone Thom used to read this Report; he did a great job with the statistics. America is addicted to violence. First we have to admit we have a problem. Let the admission commence.
How many Americans, believed that the 2nd amendment was to overthrow a tyrannical Government? 1st thing you have to do is define what is a tyrannical government. Article 1-8.15, it says to provide for the calling forth the militia to exercise a Laws of the Union, suppress insurrection and repel invasion. Nowhere in the Constitution it says to overthrow the government by force.

There are lots of good writers. Many can put a point on things much better than myself. I had a fairly good education. But I don’t write often enough to remember some of the rules. So I just write quickly in a folk telling style, I guess.
I remember being a little kid in central rural Ohio, about the same age as you, Thom, and perhaps some of you other subscribers. You may remember the toy guns. The little cowboy outfits. The playing a gunslinger out at play. Or a war soldier, or a policeman. Seeing and hearing the “pow pow POW!!” we would see in those formative years on TV and in movies.
About these guns and the kids. This is all I can say. People, regular people, they won’t see it. At least not enough of them, will, in my view to induce them to jump on their members of Congress to insist that we at least get back the assault ban that we had before. I just hate that I just said that, and that I remain so pessimistic on that opinion.
It seems they embrace the old west mythology, the guns from the TV shows, the books, the popular culture.
We are part of a sub-group, we in the Thom Hartmann u-verse. We see this violence, this shame of those who obstruct the much needed restrictions on deadly force weapons. We can only try the best we can to try and see how to make more people become aware of this and the many other dangers that are part of our world at the present.
Where I am, in Montana. Our Governor came into office this January. He immediately opened up the guns to school and college campuses. There were objections. But none solid enough to resist. People use this argument that if people have a weapon they can respond and gun down the assailant. Oh boy. Yeah, right.
God, or whatever Common Spirit and Faith we can be a part of, we must continue to ask ourselves, how we may succeed in bringing back an enlightened state. And remain vigilant in making it happen. I think success will only come when we allow ourselves to play in a more proactive way. Responding to more vile examples of Awful, just will not bring those “unenlightened” or “asleep” people to a stronger majority.
