The way I understood it at the time is: Police were being called for too many domestic quarrels which should be handled more by “social workers”. These calls were too often ending in the police shooting someone.

At the same time, police departments were not only getting increased funding, they were getting “surplus” military equipment from the Feds.
The idea was to take SOME of the money from the police & fund social workers.
Of course all it took was a few nut jobs to call for getting rid of the police all together…
NO Dem politician espoused getting rid of the police!
HulitC, if I may intersect something here. I have worked for one city police department, and fire department. This was in the early to late 70s. I was with those two departments almost 10 years. We had to depend on federal government equipment to survive. The city gave the departments just enough money to pay payroll and get uniforms, maybe. We even had to buy our own leather, weapons, handcuffs, everything.
When I moved to Florida in 1979, I started with the state on 1980. I was with the state until I was further to retire in 1995. I also was with the DeSoto County Sheriff’s Department for 2 1/2 years during that time. Both departments there also depended on military surplus for equipment.
Now, one last thing. I was Ann in structure in the law enforcement field from 1973 until 1995 when I had to give it all up. Law enforcement officers deaths were accounted every year the most to responses to domestic complaints. As for “police officers killing people’s needlessly on domestic calls”. That doesn’t happen. Who’s killed needlessly on domestic violence complaints is the law enforcement officers. This past year, more officers were lost on domestic calls than any other reason.
Now, I disagree with the @sebdung out social workers” to answer there domestic complaints. You’ll have just as many, if not more, killed then than you do law enforcement officers. I have no idea what the answer is to the problem, other than electing people into local, state, and federal, political positions that are willing to actually sit then and have conversation/debate about the issue. And, figure out a way to actually fund the law enforcement agencies so they can get the officers the training they need to help them do a better job than what they are doing. It all boils down to three things. Leadership, equipment, training.
Without good, effective, leadership, nothing is accomplished worthwhile. Without good equipment, not havd he fyy it en or cheap stuff from the military, that’s been totally used up, nothing can be fine effectively by the ‘front line’ folks. And lastly, if you dint train the officers, they can’t perform their duties as they need, or supposed, to be performed.
That’s it, my friend. I hope that helps you folks with your thoughts sad conversation. I have dealt with this all first hand, right then to the budget conversation fur the departments. So I was involved in this all first hand.
