Despite long and repeated exposure, I continue to be fascinated by the reprehensibility (is this even a word?) of the Republicans from Nixon onward. (A few honorable ones, like Ed Brooke from my state and Mac Mathias from MD, hung on longer, but by the end of the '80s they were nearly all gone.)

Question, though: How reliable was the signature matching when done (mostly, I'm guessing) by amateurs? The more time passes between registration and voting day, the more variation there's likely to be, and age and physical infirmity (including temporary ones like a sprained wrist) can alter one's handwriting. Given the well-documented shenanigans used to prevent voting in Old Dixie, I'm skeptical about the process. In machine-run northern cities, the problem was likely to be the opposite: people voting who weren't eligible.

At 87, my signature hasn't changed much. But I learned to write cursive in the first grade. Now scribbling on a note pad my writing can get messy, but signing something my signature hasn't changed.
