While the battle for House Speaker appears to be about personality, it’s really about ideology. It’s about the future of “big government” and the American middle class
I take issue with calling laborers 'unskilled.' They were actually considered skilled laborers, trained in trades like pipefitting, electrical, plumbing work. An unskilled laborer had yet to be trained, journey-manned and certified. Give these wonderfully hardworking people some credit. Also, do a deep dive on the Koch Brothers; their father went to Nazi Germany in the 1930's and built oil refineries for the Third Reich. Koch was a total creep who left his two young boys with a dominatrix German nanny who abused them. Yup; captains of U.S. industry, those boys. One is sicker than the other!
I could not agree more. I'm a wildly over paid executive in the technology industry. I recently sold a plot of land to a developer to build a house. I work with him and his team as they build the 5,000 square foot McMansion. These laborers have more knowledge of their areas of expertise (raw land, pipe fitting, framing, electricity etc...) than i have in my area of expertise by a long shot. And the general contractor knows more about what he is producing that most CEO's i have worked for.
In technology we have financial wizards that make us the stupid profits we make. Not engineers. And not CEO's for sure. Lobbyists impact our profits, like with banks, more than engineers.
You are spot on. "unskilled labor" ???? Give me a break. The average Barista has to hold more knowledge in her head than the average tech executive.
"Ever since the Reagan Revolution, the phrase “big government” has been on the lips of Republican politicians" isn't quite accurate. The John Birch Society and its sympathizers railed against big government during my youth in the 1950s & 60s. They may have been the lunatic fringe of the Republican Party back then, but a part of it they most definitely were. Reagan's great accomplishment was to paste on a slick, Hollywood veneer.
My dad's mother was a member of the John Birch Society. The rest of the family thought she was crazy. Ironically, she had no problem spending her Social Security or being on Medicare.
I'll dip into conspiracy for a moment and suggest this is all about laying the groundwork for a fresh insurrection in 2024. The 'Freedom Caucus' is not about legislation - it is about continuing the fascist efforts to destroy the government. Recall the Supremes are currently contemplating their 'independent legislature theory' providing red states legislature with complete power to decide elections. Control of the House is a key ingredient in creating chaos during the next election - and chaos is central to ensure TFG or his replacement take power regardless of popular vote.
I guess I need an education again on social safety net programs and social security. I remember when in high school during early 60's being told it would not be around for me. I remember when I got my first job I paid into social security thru 21st century until ten years ago when I started receiving my social security. I thought we progressive did not include SS in the safety net as we paid into our whole life. Still paying $170 a month out of SS for stupidity Medicare Advantage.
What I fail to understand is if/when middle class is essentially eradicated, wouldn’t that hurt the corporate bottom line? If buying power is continuously manipulated in favor of the very rich, it means an entire class of society & the goods they strive to purchase, will become useless. How does capitalism adjust for this imbalance? Who will buy all the stuff in Kohl’s & Target? What happens when the peons run out of money?
I love the way you nailed it Exactly : They are the “Gang of 20” and they want to control the House of Representatives having fully control a House of 435 in the name of democracy they claim and for the “benefit” of the American People. They claim. What they really want is to return us to the America of 1900 as described herein by Thom Hartmann.
As usual, spot on about the history and ideology that got us here. Now add to that the personalities involved, and we are once again embarrassed on the world stage. Freedom Caucus is their name, but disruption is their game. The Republicans LOVE to talk about fighting, and if a valid reason to fight doesn't exist, they will make one up. For their brains, it is what they are comfortable with; being safe, having equal opportunity, and pursuing one's happiness simply isn't a priority for them.
The Republicans gave their party to Trump and his spawn---they did not confiscate it. Exhibit A was Kevin going to the mob-boss to kiss his ass, I mean ring. And just as you described, the criminals will never be satisfied till they have gotten their hands on all the resources in this country while controlling the work-force. But sometimes we don't have to wait for karma to be a bitch, just ask Andrew Tate. Kevin won't be enjoying his time in that position; being controlled by the mob is a miserable life.
This century is going to be all about the work-force, environment, and civil rights. That will rhyme a bit with the last century, but with communication and education, we will progress without the assistance of the right, just like we did then.
By caving to the crazies on the Motion to Vacate House rule, McCarthy has given them the power to remove him at will if he refuses to do their bidding. Assuming they bounce him at some point, his successor will be chosen from among "candidates previously chosen by the two parties." Of the candidates the Republicans put forth during the process of electing the Speaker, Jim Jordan is the most prominent. The prospect of a Jordan Speakership and domination of the House by the crazies might be sufficient to persuade at least 6 moderate Republicans to break ranks and elect Jeffries, the Democratic candidate "previously chosen" by one of the two parties.
If that were to happen, those six moderate Republicans would become the most powerful members of the House with veto power over anything Jeffries and the Dems put forward. Recognizing this power, Jeffries would be forced to propose legislation acceptable to center-right Republicans. Bipartisan stuff would get done along centrist lines, the right-wing extremists would be neutered and a giant thumb stuck in Trump's eye.

Ok. I did say this was conspiracy thinking. ;)
It’s not conspiracy thinking. It is being played out by the Freedum Circus even as we speak.
