Over 100 ex-Republicans members of congress and national security officials signed a letter to the public supporting Harris for president. While they may disagree with Harris on many issues, Trump had demonstrated dangerous qualities like an unusual affinity for dictators like Putin and contempt for the norms of decent, ethical and lawful behavior.
The letter also condemned Trump’s action on Jan. 6, 2021. By inciting the violent attack on the Capital and defending those who committed it, he had violated his oath of office and brought danger to our country. Pence is quoted as saying anyone who puts himself over the Constitution should never be president of the US. They went on to say that Harris has demonstrated a commitment to upholding the ideals that define our nation-freedom, democracy and rule of law adding that Trump is unfit to serve again as President, or indeed in any office of public trust.
Signing the letter were former defense secretaries Chuck Hagel and William S. Cohen; ex-CIA directors Michael V. Hayden and William H. Webster; former director of national intelligence John D. Negroponte and former Massachusetts Governor William F. Weld; former Trump administration officials, Miles Taylor and Olivia Trove and GOP Illinois Rep Adam Kinzinger.

The vast pool of corruption contaminating our electorial complex is so large and toxic that it overwhelms my senses. Contributing to the most disspiriting effect is that so little rectifying response ever appears. Dragons appear, but no dragon slayers. Government response? Yadda yadda yadda. Sensible solutions to such complexity lie far beyond my Ken. Why along the whole history were they allowed to be so permitted? It would seem that the MSM would have smelled the sewer and exposed it clearly and consistently. That naive reaction is based now on old movies where morally warriored protagonists dramatically slew the power dragons. Not now. Not today's MSM. $$$
"Republican leaders and the billionaires who own them know that if they lose this election in a blowout, it might be years, or (like in the 1930-1980 era, decades) before they can again climb to power..."
You would think global oligarchs trying to wipe democracies off the face of the earth, replacing them with authoritarian regimes, and, in the US, openly supporting convicted criminals as rulers would be a bigger story.
I foresee no blow-out, only a squeaker. As for journalism and the world-wide story, most Americans like living in their virtual cocoons that almost seal out information that apparently provides no benefit to themselves. Most won't learn about Hungary, Turkey, etcetera unless they can see direct benefit to themselves. Donald Trump is in that group.
"Criminals as rulers"? I'll check with my alienated right-wing cousin and his friend, but I believe that they think small and local. That probably means immigration and homosexual rights are hair-triggers -- for my cousin at least. Also, "the system" does not work for them, and they seem to be true believers who think that Trump is their only choice for salvation.
(Tangentially, "Heil Hitler" is best translated as "Salvation through Hitler" which is scary, but modern fascists, unlike those of 90 years ago, are mostly not in love with death in this rather effete materialistic era, so the likelihood of violence is less than in the 1930s.)
Also, journalism is a competitive business (war without blood) and journalists work for bosses who work for profit. Journalists put their own interests ahead of others, including interviewees whom they are willing at times to sell out, according to author Joan Didion.
If early in-person voting In other states matches or surpasses that of Georgia it may derail their plans? Easy to see why Trump feels comfortable talking like a dictator and visiting McDonalds.
Kamala needs to declare victory one second after midnight on November 5th!
It won't be a GOP president for 4 years, more like, until the stupid, lying, greedy parasites bring on mass extinction! Either by global warming or by wars or extermination camps or starvation and disease.... Probably all of them?
Middle class and poor people with a roof over their head, seem to have a harder time grasping that possibility, whereas the very poor who have been abused know reality very well! Man's inhumanity to man!
With Merrick Garland still sitting there I don't expect much help from him. Maybe he could make an appearance finally to preserve democracy?
Like everyone else, I am living in fear and unable to feel any real hope for the future. However, I do not think John Roberts or Amy Coney Barrett have any desire to see Trump back in power, despite their loyalty to conservative ideas and Republican politicians and politics. I'm also not so sure that the Fox Nuisance channel will not call the shots with some accuracy to try to maintain some degree of legitimacy as they did in calling AZ for Biden in 2020. That's not much to go on but one has to find some solace somewhere. Nevertheless, it truly is up to the people and especially to the youth who are the ones who will suffer most if Trump returns to the White House.
If we have a Harris + Blue Wave victory putting the Presidency and Congress in the hands of the Dems, there will be a chance that democracy can be rescued and strengthened. It will take a lot of work from steel spined Dems. Failure to do the work will risk the billionaires and Gangsters Opposing Progress to bully and cheat their way back onto the levers of power.
For the sake of establishing a more secure democracy we'll need to get to work on these ASAP (yesterday!), invoke "court stripping" wherever helpful to keep SCOTUS from meddling:
1. SCOTUS Term Limits, Court Expansion, and Enforced Ethics.
2. Statehood for Washington DC and Puerto Rico.
3. With new laws or SCOTUS cases - reverse or eliminate Buckley, Bellotti, and Citizens United.
4. Make voting more secure with at least the "For The People" and "John Lewis Voting Rights" acts.
5. Ban gerrymandering.
6. Authorize and protect the eventual "National Popular Vote" that essentially does away with the EC.
7. Double or triple the number of House Reps. Had either been in effect in 2000, Gore would have won in the Electoral College. Florida would not have mattered.
This reduces the senate based elector skew of the EC.
8. Grant ALL states the right of state-level Citizen Initiatives. Congress can establish guidelines to keep Big Money from exploiting this. If they all had this we could see many more states with new laws protecting abortion rights on their ballots, possibly Ranked Choice Voting, ban gerrymandering, and bring in ACA states Medicaid expansion. BONUS: A clever Congress can structure this to also allow Citizen Initiatives to validate amendments to the US Constitution. I've more confidence and hope in the wisdom of grass roots citizens vs. their legislatures.
9. ... For implementation strategy, link the SCOTUS changes to the coming restoration of abortion rights, securing voting rights, banning gerrymandering & assault weapons, etc.
The message is,
"If we don't make these changes to SCOTUS, they will again take away these rights."
Brings to mind comments attributed to Karl Rove back in the Bush/Neocon heyday. Asked what is the political objective, Rove responded "A permanent Republican majority." Asked how he expected to attain that objective, he replied "By whatever means necessary." My recollection is that this exchange came from a PBS documentary.
Iam always on the verge of vomiting whenever I read or hear the GOP plans to grab power that is not theirs and abrogate the votes, rights, and opinions of anyone else. In a way, I can't wait for this election to be over, however I know that the republicans will never let it end. I also would like to avoid the election altogether, just stop thinking about it, but I know I can't. All I can do is vote, encourage others to vote, and then cover my eyes until someone tells me everything is OK.
We must be prepared. I don't think Harris will lie down and take it like Gore did. Let's work for a landslide.!

Ironic that my vote to preserve democracy several weeks back is vulnerable to partisan chicanery that could wind up replacing democracy with fascism.

Trump rigged the election against himself by proving himself unwilling and unable to protect the American people.
Elon is in constant contact w/ Putin, clearly he is a commie-pinko, idiot savant who should stick to tech.
The GOP? A gaggle of anti-American vote-whores, not unlike crack-whores but on their knees to anyone for a few dollars more.
The 6 Supremes are like COVID, they have damaged Lady Justice's health w/ Long Clarence.
Trump needs to be in prison and the GOP should be abolished.
Finally, Donald is a craven coward for avoiding the draft.
Bone spurs my ass.
