69 million woman could be affected .. rise up America and say something .. call your congressmen and senators .. this was voted down last year by the senate .. now they are trying to fast track it .. this must be stopped

I don't know what to tell you. The time for women to prevent this was November 5, 2024. Actually, it was November, 2016. But now SCOTUS is corrupted, the Republicans control the House and Senate, and god knows what Elon Musk is up to.

We are getting to the "...and find out" stage. And as bad as I thought it would be, it's shaping up to be worse than I predicted.

I’m sorry, did you just say the time for women to prevent this was November? Guess I won’t jump in at any time to help any men about to lose their rights! Not that they ever have to worry.

That’s exactly what my husband and I do… I never understood why you’d change your name . It’s a holdover from when women weren’t allowed to own property & were considered property themselves.

Expand full comment

Another strategy would be simply for women not to change their last names after marriage. That's how my wife and I have lived together for 50 years and it has worked just fine. If there was a widespread push to do this specifically because of the issues raised it would drive the Republicans nuts. A policy to disenfranchise women because they weren't legally following tradition had boomeranged into empowering women to clearly and permanently identify themselves.

Yes, but that does not help the millions who already have changed their surname. And then there is the cynicism of many women who simply refuse to understand that they have much more power than they think, via any number of reasonings. Now all the white women who voted for misogyny - 53 percent - appear to be a lost cause. Fewer than 10 percent of Black women went down the rabbit hole of oppression, and less than 50 percent of Hispanas took that route as well. So changing your ID requires a birth certificate. Seriously, how many women have theirs in hand? And how many mothers ever told their daughters to register to vote and get their driver's license in their maiden name? Since 2015, I wondered out loud many times IF women would actually take charge of their lives, and demonstrate that they valued them independently rather than as handmaidens. For Pete's sake, Kamala was a double minority female, so I can only guess that white women are not so liberated at all, and foster a lot of jealousy about the 'other.' As a white male, this is all very tragic to watch.

Unfortunately as a similar person I would agree. A lot of this is cultural, some of it is just social inertia. We have a good friend, a well educated woman, who in the 1970s married a man who eventually became a state assistant attorney general. He died suddenly and she discovered that every single bank account, credit card, the home ownership, etc. was in his name. My wife is an accountant and it took her and an attorney some time to get everything straightened out so her friend could actually access her money and get credit in her own name. Nobody had thought about this as the man just did it. This is something I recommend couples check over!

The idea that these white men somehow think they have the right to stop women voting is about as foolish as them voting for Trump.

Be that as it may, here we are .

If a woman has been married more than once does she need multiple sets of documents illustrating every name change .

I hope women completely stop taking their husbands names , however the thug men that came up with this would no doubt then exclude women who refused to take their husband names, maybe we should just not marry anymore .

This is BS jump through our hoops requirement. It is not law yet . It’s time for women to refuse to put up with any more sleezy tricks from these loser white male magats. Fight this .

I’m sure there is strategy that we can come up with to make this less appealing to these bigots.

I had my checking account, savings account, several credit cards in my name, our home, and a will that we agreed and signed that I was the Trustee in charge for years before my husband died. But there were three specific accounts, my husband's name only on the accounts, vestiges of his days before we married forty years ago, which weren't worth much; nonetheless, I began after his death to clean up our accounts and discovered how difficult the institutions changing to my name could be, and they almost succeeded. I had a hell of a time with all the games they played - as one company manager said, they are sabotaging you. They would speak in code referencing people I know to emphasis 'so you thought this would be easy'.

One incident that especially stands out is that 4 days before my husband died, I tried to comply with Bank Of America's request to close a small account in my husband's name. I discussed this in an officer's office, and he proved it by calling hdqtrs. It could not be done unless my husband came in and signed. Finally, I came in with my husband, who was, of course, very ill but made a great effort to go in. We were informed I didn't have an appointment, so no, they would not allow him to sign.

This is the COVID-19 period and a time when I was also caring for my mentally disabled son and my husband in palliative care and about to transition to hospice care. We had been banking there for more than forty years. They knew us by name, and other employees stood by, unwilling to challenge the manager. I lost it. Not my finest day. After his death, I was in the bank, and one of the officers said to me

we should have taken care of the issue right then, no matter that I didn't have an appointment. The bank atmosphere is like that of Congress; they are very formal and polite and trained to obey and not make waves in the face of death.

I was informed that the manager had written a letter about me.

I remember as a kid in the 1970’s after my parents divorce, my mom couldn’t even get a credit card in her name without threatening a lawsuit. Our house was in my grandparents name on my mom’s side so there were no issues with that, but when they sold it to move to florida, my mom couldn’t get a mortgage in her name to buy her own place, even though she could afford it, even without alimony considering the fact that my dad hardly ever paid either that or child support. The system was always rigged against women. Especially single or divorced women. The one thing she taught me that stuck with me forever is to NEVER depend on a man to support you. Make your own way in life and make sure that you are financially independent without a man.

Wow, thanks for sharing Carol. I am so sorry that you went through this. Credit unions and neighborhood banks might behave better than big ones. But this was criminally stupid of them. When big institutions act like this the best thing is stop giving them business and let others know why. Telling the upper management can’t hurt either. Sometimes they get the message.

I appreciate your affirming comments. It was three years ago, and I still can't believe anyone would act like that. I immediately withdrew what business we had with Bank of America. My credit union, SDCCU, heard my complaint but didn't comment- at least listened. Yes, Credit Unions are much better at helping when one of their employees does something stupid. Of course, I was cited for my outcry protesting the abuse.

Social conditioning, aka brainwashing, is the problem Mick. Women in practically all societies are raised to devalue themselves, that their value springs from having a husband and taken his identity.

A good example is the dowery. Even in in America until the 2nd quarter of the 20th Century women were considered the property of men. In colonial America if the husband sold his land, the wife had to sign away her dowers rights.

And it is the mother who raises the daughter to negate her own existence, not the father, tis the mother who carries forward the tradition of identity negation.

Mother, pastor, peers. Up until the mid 19th Century education of a female was considered a waste, the job was to teach her how to be a good wife, cook, seamstress, chop wood, tend the garden, kill the chicken, maybe slaughter the hog.

It’s absolutely mind boggling how women’s identity, separate from mens, goes back to the beginning of time, it feels like. Because when a baby girl in a Western, Judeo-Christian based society/culture is born, she automatically has her father’s last name. Were the women ever separated from the men??? We are the daughters of our fathers. Our society is so totally based in patriarchy. If I were to adopt my own name, I’d be Mitzi WideOpenHeartedSongstress*. Get rid of all the men’s names. My sons would think I’d flown off the handle- which is also scary to men I guess, because there’s the image of the witch, right there.

It’s hard to live on this planet.

* And if anyone needs proof of the wideopenheartedsongstress part, you can find me under my married name, Mitzi Schwarz, on Spotify 🥰

You can read about how Prince Philip tried to get Queen Elizabeth to be a member of the "House of Mountbatten". He was furious that every other man in the U.K. got to put his name on the family and he had to be a Windsor. But eventually he came to terms with it. Some societies do better than others on this, but it shouldn't take a royal ruling to keep one's birth name. Hilary had to stop being a Rodham to help Bill, and that might have politically driven, but it certainly wasn't right.

I, personally, like the Scandinavia tradition of daughters taking their mother's first name as surname and sons taking their father's. So, the son of Eric takes Ericsson as his surname and Ingrid's daughter takes Ingridsdottir as her last name.

In an age where nearly everyone has their own personal cell phone number, that we just be named by that number. ;) That would certainly minimize systemic and institutional racism, no doubt.

Yes, I saw that in Iceland and it is a good idea, though would be far more complicated in our much larger and far more diverse population where genealogy records don’t go back nearly as far. But there are a lot of alternatives that people do, such as combining or inventing new family names. All of these seem like good ways of getting around racist “tags”. This reminds me a bit of an old MAD magazine page where people are identified solely by numbers (one person was hyphenated by the Queen) but criminals are given names instead!

So if a woman never legally changed her last name to her husband's, wouldn't it be easier to get a new driver's license and/or passport (using her birth certificate for identification) to use should an ID be required for voting?

My wife never changed her name, and why should she, she has her own identity and not that of Mrs Farrar. Women have been brainwashed to believe that they have no identity of their own. My 1st wife wanted more than anything to be a Mrs...

I was a law firm administrator and two of the lawyers were married, she kept her own name and identity.

By avocation I am a genetic genealogist, and my biggest frustration is losing a link because a record only shows the mothers married name.

Within the various indigenous tribes and nations there are some Matriarchal Councils that govern the people. There are several reasons why this form of governance was and is chosen, but that is a very long and detailed explanation. The short story is that one of the main considerations is peace. The people knew that mothers would think long and hard before they sent their children into war. So, they preferred that they be the determinators for decisions about wars. Additionally, if a dispute arose between tribes, the women of one tribe would meet with the women of the other tribe to try and negotiate a consideration of restoring Balance. If the women could not agree, then the Council would meet to discuss war. Additionally, because the people knew that the utmost consideration for peace was Balance, all decisions about laws were focused on maintaining and sustaining Balance. The Iroquois Confederacy, who Ben Franklin studied to formulate aspects of the Constitutions, were very adapt at this practice. But, here we are. Don Quixote and the Knights of the Square Table.

That would not only apply to voting...but to business and to the professions. Back to the future.

I am so old that when I started practicing law, Catholic lawyers could not take divorce cases for fear of excommunication. Catholic judges would not grant divorces.

Women were barred from institutions like Harvard Law. In my home county, we had 1 woman lawyer, no Blacks., although I went to HS with a Black guy who was on the faculty of Duquesne Law School.

Yes, if conservative women, in conservative states, do not get a pass via county clerk efforts, then R and D brand females will feel the pinch. But the 19th just says women can vote, via a right. But to prove that a woman is who she says she is the manipulation of this so-called Act. The purposeful MISuse of documentation to thin the voting ranks is as old as the hills, especially for POC/minorities. This latest betrayal is just a widening of the net. Unfortunately for all of us, women in 'murka failed to vote, which is actually a 'vote' against their own best interests. As a white male educated by a feminist spouse, in the 70s, I am baffled about this reality. Both my grown daughters said the D brand and Harris said little or nothing about the pressing issues of young voters, specifically. One of the biggest barriers to equality and full democracy is the constant manipulation of communication, and the pathetic gaslighting - bullying by another name - that is in constant motion out of every misogynist male mouth, and many females of the same ilk. Women, and men as well, MUST face their fears. Bullying, intimidation, gaslighting, seducing and addicting today's women is a multi-billion dollar biz. It is a very intimidating and fearful time out there, and across history it has been shown that these attacks are extremely successful. Buck up, and find your core values and strengths. When it comes to oppression, time stands still.

Ah, yes, the ages old (as in the entirety of human history) a woman's place is in the home, preferably barefoot & pregnant.

She is chattel, she is a commodity to be bartered for, enslaved, ignored, invisible. She only needs to be brought out when needed to support her Lord & master, you know, stand by his side as he denies that sexual dalience with his secretary(either male or female). Then back to the house she goes to be a good little wifey until the next time.

Do you think that these mysoginists ever take their ideas to the end result. If all those women stay home whose going to the menial tasks that the all powerful men won't do. You know, how many men do you see as "housekeeping" in hotels, motels. And who will take care of the "sexual needs" of the unmarried man, oh, I forgot, the "oldest business in the world", prostitution will be ok as long as there's a man as the Pimp in Charge.

So if we, as women, take this story to what WE see as the logical conclusion man's economy will come to a screeching halt. Are we sure that corporate America, those bastions of idealism, will give their all male staffs a living wage? Hmm, now that is a conundrum isn't it? So, now, we have even more homeless & this time we will look like the poor in India, climbing over mountains of garbage trying to find something to eat or something they can salvage to sell. Ah, I can see the cardboard box cities now.

Are you going to say that there are inconsistacies in my story? Sure there are but no worse than the ridiculous conclusions that these men have come up with.

So sure put women back under your thumbs good luck with the world you create for yourselves.

Thanks, I have been advocating this forever, and not just wars, but the war against women. The only reason that we have this situation is that women won't keep their legs closed. If women stood up to men, and said no more pussy until Trump is gone, nor more pussy until we have full rights, we wouldn't be in this situation, because save for a few liberal men, men are sexually obsessed and need to dominate women.

I have always enjoyed Lysistrata's inherent message and the power of the myth to motivate women and deter men from war. The same power of myth empowers all religions. For example, look at what Christianity has done with the Jesus myth. Yes, he was a person, but the story of his rising from the dead and becoming the Son of God is the essential underpinning of Christianity. When I hear people chastise Mormons, for example, for their story, I say they look at Christians who believe a person rose from the dead.

Each religion's stories are powerful spiritual avenues. What stories or beliefs empower you spiritually? When researching southern California's Indigenous tribes, I obtained research material written by a prominent caucasian historian from the 1920s, a book made available to me by one of the tribe's people I knew from kindergarten through high school. As he handed me the material, he said, Carol, we don't believe those stories anymore." No, they had been indoctrinated to embrace the Christian stories - traded one set of beliefs for the other that provided them the story of creation. Of course, at that moment on the reservation, I was not about to elaborate on the price they paid to believe in the Judeo-Christian Christ. Joseph Campbell's The Power of The Myth makes this clear.

I am sorry. I wasn't clear about what I meant by Joseph Campbell's The Power of the Myth; he clarified that the story brings us to our spiritual selves.

Democracy has been on a collision course with fascism for over four decades. When Joe Biden handed the keys to the government to Donald Trump we lost our last great chance to save our country's democracy. Joe Biden needed to use his presidential authority to stop the peaceful transition power to Trump until he had been tried for all charges.

And now that Trump is president, it is clear that his plan for America is to change our country into an oligarchy like Russia under Putin. Trump is currently dismantling every agency of our government by appointing unqualified candidates that that are only loyal to him and firing those employees that have worked to protect We the People.

This practice has some real serious consequences for the welfare of the American people in the future. Joe Biden did everything he could to end the covid epidemic. But, because of the negative reaction of MAGAs and anti-vaxxers, over a million people died from the illness. If Donald Trump and Robert Kennedy Jr were in charge of handling the epidemic, an American Holocaust would have resulted in over 3 million deaths.

Time to prevent a total destruction of our American way of life is rapidly coming to an end. As in Russia, elections won't change what is happening to us now. It took World War II to free the German people from Hitler. An American Second Civil War is totally unimaginable. It took Abraham Lincoln to unite the Union and free the slaves. Now, instead of Lincoln, you have Donald Trump leading the country. He has no desire to unite the Nation and he would be one of the largest slave owners in the country.

The only course of action left is to organize massive protests against Trump and the Republican members of Congress that are afraid to stand up against him. We need to boycott every product and service provided by businesses that have bought into Trump's plan. During the pandemic, Trump mandated that people who provided essential services had to go to work even though it would be risky to the worker and their families. The American people need to make the great sacrifices like they did throughout our history to protect our Nation and in its Constitution. During World War II, the people at home had to make great sacrifices to help support our troops and free the world from Hitler. Now we must be ready to make similar sacrifices by encouraging workers that provide essential services to stay home. Shut down the economy! Protest by staying home. You will only get Trump's attention by hitting him in the pocket book. That's where it will hurt them most. Think about how much better that would be than sending your loved ones to fight in a civil war or to some foreign war that results from Trump's idiocy. Be strong! Stand up for your country.

When I turned 17, I began to read The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich. For weeks, each day in study hall, I would read about the enemies my grandpa, uncles and dad fought to destroy. The role of Reich women was bizarre, as if they were males in female bodies. By 19 I knew that Viet Nam was a land/resource grab, based upon ethnic and religious prejudice, that killed some of my buddies and ruined the lives of their families. By 21 I resisted that fiasco. I had read Gandhi's Nonviolent Resistance, and followed MLK actions daily. By 73 I was a member of SWP and an independent voter. All this from a farm kid who grew up in Nowheresville.

It may be too late for the 'murkan population. To defeat first Lincoln, and then FDR, took some time, but the degenerate forces of Evil never stop, unless they are squashed like bugs. Many state and federal 'laws' are actually repressive steps to keep citizens from the power they MUST HAVE, if they are to truly be in charge of their own society(ies). And once in power, to the point of ignoring a govt's. own Laws and cutting off the legs of regulators and LE, Who/What will stand in the way of fascistic nihilists???

Where will conscientious citizens get Truthful news? Much of that ability comes from the CFR, the arms and legs of the Constitution, and now it is very apparent that those avenues are silenced, probably for good. The 'press' Fourth Estate is GONE. Legislation is in process to eliminate not-for-profit orgs., by the thousands. Most independent media are in this category. They exist via donations and grants. All grants are gone. If these orgs must pay tax, the citizenry will lose out in several ways. Extra money for this WILL dry up, very soon. When MAGA finally ignores the federal courts, which have ZERO enforcement power (US Marshalls work for the Exec), and only one or two are killed or injured or driven out of town, what actions are left?

We will face our own military, in our towns and cities, with an entity in charge who has written in books that 'lefties' should be exterminated, and has demonstrated that females should be raped and beaten. Someone wrote that we are being taken back to the '50s. It should be noted that the actual regression is to the 1850s, just prior to the war against the Confederacy. Where do we actually think all this Naziism is coming from? It is NOT Vermont, or Illinois, or NM or CA or WA. Grievance is the second line of defence of Fear; the first line of defence is the Lie. The third line is

Paranoid violence, in many forms.

All of this, just in time for the cascade of tipping points in the polycrises of climate catastrophe and the Sixth Extinction. Buckle up, stay frosty, know how to identify your friends from your enemies, and KNOW that from here on out, Nothing will be the same, ever.

This week, Trump fired the inspector general assigned to USAID after the office released a report detailing the potential consequences of Trump and Musk’s dismantling of the agency. No reason was given for the termination.

This came after the recent mass firings of agency inspectors general. New reports also raise concerns that certain fired IGs — who conduct independent investigations and are not meant to be subject or loyal to the whims of political appointees — were actively investigating matters that could affect Musk’s business interests.

Claiming that DOGE is not subject to FOIA, and that its records are instead subject to the Presidential Records Act, means that the public wouldn’t know the true extent of DOGE and Musk’s influence, power, and destruction until at least 2034.

His space exploration company SpaceX has received over $20 billion from the federal government over the past 15 years, according to federal spending records.

Simple solutions. 1)Pass a law requiring men to adopt their wive’s last name - or choose a new one altogether, requiring both parties to legally change names. 2)Don’t get married. 3)Many women retain their own names for professional reasons - that means some women have different last names depending on the situation - child care or work.. 4) Staes could add the change of name to the marriage certificate or have it automatically changed on government IDs - after all we have computers.

This BS of destroying a set of laws, not to mention the 19th Amendment, is the same ridculous demolition approach to our institutions that republicans are delighted in. Personally, I think women, especially married women, should choose chastity until this madness stops.
