This is one of the most difficult articles I've read in some time. Yes, all the news is challenging these days and nothing can be ignored. But, to envision women being sent back to the 1870's, treated as chattel whose main function on this planet is to produce children, is beyond belief. Yet, it could become our reality.

The final paragraph in this report sets our agenda..."The stakes couldn’t be higher and we need to not only pay attention to these behind-the-scenes actions but also prepare for the worst by developing both political and legislative strategies now for the possibility of an adverse ruling and the impact it could have on next year’s election". Those reading The Hartmann Report get it. We must focus on engaging those who pay no attention to what's going on and/or believe this could never happen in America because they are wrong! It can happen, it will happen, and we must be prepared for the challenge.

The only way to win Rebel is for Congress, the Senate and Executive to be Democratic controlled and filibuster proof. But we are a nation of idiots. Special interest groups, threatening not to vote, vote third party or vote for Trump because the phuckwits haven't got everything that they wanted, mainly because the people that they empower with their petulance and assholery the Republicans have blocked all legislation that dis empowers them (the Christian white nationalist base) and their donors.

We will see the results, when the fascists take over, because these idiots gave the Democrats and the President the finger.

Talk of stupidity. Slamming your head with a hammer, because you couldn't get an iPhone is idiocy.

If they think democracy is bad, they're really going to think dictatorship is bad. The Christians could ban, abortions, gambling, pornography, smoking cigarettes, alcohol, and it wouldn't affect me, and I am one of the people that are their mortal enemies? I think this will end like prohibition did.

In order to serve good and God one needs to try to end human suffering. The fascists try to cause human suffering. Because they are sadists in my opinion. Most all the right wingers that are religious that I've seen behave like soldiers notching their belt every time they kill an enemy with their gun. The right wingers must believe the more people they convert and put on their Bible belt, the more their God will like them and will let them into heaven. WHO is teaching that? I have heard it said the Muslims indoctrinate young children that way, but apparently the right wing Christians are the same? The right wing churches definitely do not deserve tax breaks! They are terrorists and enemies of democracy. It is like funding a group of terrorists and that is precisely what the GOP is now. Only with help from the billionaires like it was a thousand years ago as well, except they weren't billionaires. they were just rich. They may have owned just a couple of donkeys?

When I was 11 I use to collect metals, newspapers and old soda bottles for recycle. After WWII, the nation was still recycling everythign, but they had to be separate, newspapers bound by string.

One day I brought home a Coke bottle with a knitting needle and yarn inside, also a coat hangar. My mother told me that these were used for abortion,. They were found in a parking lot.

Girls were dying from these self administered abortions.

That is the world we are returning to, but these scum, women and men, don't care, they have to preserve and protect male dominance.

Appreciate Thom’s fact based historical information in all his articles as well as pointing out the battle for sane policy- making out there for us. But I agree with other commentors that we are in an information bubble of our own on this site and unfortunately the information desert out there in right wing land and the MSM controlled “news” on the airwaves never go into much detail regarding the real world consequences and damage of regressive right wing policies. I am beyond angry at the fascist idiot Republican Party and their power grab to destroy democracy as we know it. Those of us whose parents fought in WW2 should be outraged and voting as if our life depends on it. Is the current generation aware and listening enough to pay attention to the misogyny and bigotry of the current excuse for a political party in their whole -hearted worship of a serial sexual predator/ rapist, conman, and business fraudster? I hope sanity and the rule of law prevails in our country and the younger generations push back forcefully by voting “no Republican ever in charge of anything again “ in all future elections.

The reason I support free birth control for all people, including pets, is to prevent unneeded suffering. That view goes completely opposite of what the fascists have in store. Since the fascists are a bunch of sadists, the more pain the more pleasure they derived from it. What the fascists are planning to do is more ungodly than doing nothing at all. The rich having about 6 billion people to exterminate on Earth are not happy and they want even more. Bring the babies in and torture them. That is not pro-life, that is torture!

Yes it is torture I agree.

We have 'put to sleep' many of our rescued pets because they were in pain and I do not regret doing it.

As a woman who has had 3 children (one of which died a crib death). I was told by my Doctor in England it was very unlikely considering the state I was in, I would get pregnant. I did and my 2nd daughter was born a year later. The fear I went through expecting her to die at any moment, kept my hand on her heart every night mostly not sleeping or eating. I wanted an abortion but my ex said no. I was very young and scared of him. Obviously I love her BUT I keep imagining the same situation now in the USA.

I absolutely am disgusted that these old right wing bigots of the male species should be allowed to tell women what to do. Imagine if men had to give birth..we would have NO people. Seems they think a baby just naturally slips out with no problems.

Respectfully, it doesn't take "Inquisition." Just a legal system in which females don't have "rights." We kind of all know that "marital rape" is a new concept, but the Comstock Act takes us back to a culture in which the female had no custody claim to her own offspring, no ownership of any wages she earned, unimaginable any right of support if abandoned, wasn't considered legally competent to enter into a contract or to testify in court, and, by the way, only the right to vote since 1920, 50 years after African-descended persons with penises.

Expand full comment

Why on earth has Comstock not been repealed before now? And f*** the filibuster!!! Time to end that sabotage rule once and for all. What positive thing has the filibuster produced?

Expand full comment

Daniel Solomon can answer this. I tried google and didn't quite understand the answer

"Currently, the minority merely needs to inform the majority of an intent to filibuster a bill and the legislation is set to the side. Restoring the talking filibuster would require the minority to be present and actively hold the Senate floor for the duration of a filibuster.Aug 11, 2021"

Expand full comment

Al Franken and Norm Ornstein also want the filibuster to be reversed - instead of 60 votes to pass a bill over a filibuster, they want the process to be that the party calling the filibuster must maintain 41 senators on the floor at all times, or the majority leader can call for an immediate vote for cloture. Also, debate is limited solely to the bill at hand - the first attempt to read "Green Eggs and Ham" into the Federal Record results in a vote for cloture. And I would ban the hold and the blue slip to bring the Senate into the 21st century.....

Expand full comment

Thanks Bruce. What gripes me now is that the Democrats have taken the 60 votes to mean cloture as a standard rule for passing legislation. If it doesn't have 60 votes they won't even try.

All it takes is 51 votes, with Kamala being 51, and they won't even try, and corporate media doesn't call them out.

This is why I am an independent and not a Democrat - if they cannot show leadership and some sign of political life, I cannot support the party, even if I support what they want to do. I find myself forced to vote against, not for. I quit voting because what I saw in our two party system was Humpty and Dumpty, two sides of the same coin, and when it comes to billionaires, the 10% and climate.. all I still see is Humpty and Dumpty, yet I hold my nose and vote Democrat because the alternative is unthinkable.

Oh, I agree the world would be a better place without the filibuster entirely - it is not constitutional and functions to empower the tyranny of the minority - but the Senate loves its toys and probably would not vote to ban the filibuster entirely. Since so many senators are "getting up there" in age, it would be fun to see how well they could keep them on the floor all through the night to guard their obstruction. The Genesis story still has a phenomenal grip on all of us. The idea that women did not exist originally, and were created from man’s rib, and that they are temptresses who lure men into sin and have great power by virtue of their supposed weakness will not die. I doubt that the overwhelming fear that many religious and conservative people have of, not just sex, but of the mere knowledge of sex and the women who represent the vulnerability of men’s desire is comprehensible to most normal people (hopefully, like you and I).

These individuals, such as Alito, Barrett, Thomas, Mikey J., and the other fanatics pushing a religious agenda are much more dangerous than we have imagined. They have immense influence and they are seen and see themselves as the emissaries of God fighting the evil of non-believers. Nothing is too extreme for them and their corruption and extremism are just evidence of their association with good and with God. To underestimate their ability and their willingness to tear everything down is foolhardy. Liberal/progressives are late to this war and if we don’t up our game and our commitment, we will not recognize this country in the next decade.

I suspect that the medieval and Tudor notion of gestation still lingers. The homonuclus https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homunculus. a miniature fully formed person in the sperm.

Rejection of the homonuculus, is a rejection of the male, because we know children are mini me's, don't we, that the mother plays no part in the birth, other than to act as the incubator, and that all children are copies of the fathers. (Sarcasm)

These ignorant ancestors of ours, have living descendants, 6 of which sit on SCOTUS, 222 in Congress and 50 in the Senate, and control over 23 state governments.

They knew nothing of chromosomes,. X and Y sperm, or biology.

These fools believe a fable from a book in which some spook in the sky, took a rib out of a man and created a woman. If that was so, then that would not be a woman, but a man, the DNA of a man is XY, and thus anything created from his flesh, blood or bones, would also be XY.

But underlying it all is the misogyny of males, who regardless of culture and religion, even in a so called matriarchy, women have no function or use that than that to be sexual and domestic servant, an incubator and a nanny for the man's mini me.

Forgive me if you mentioned this. How does the Post Office/FedEx know what is in a package sent to a person? Eg I could send pills from here in France and say it's a book or clothing.

They can inspect packages no matter what they are. If they find materials that are outlawed in those packages it will be looking for the sender. However if the material is shipped as if it were a bomb with all fingerprints removed with gloves used to wrap the package and everything in it and a package simply sent from another location, another city, then the original it would be pretty hard to trace the so called culprit.

I was thinking the same thing Jenny. The Post office doesn't know what is in a package, however Packages from overseas have to clear customs, and if SCOTUS rules that it is illegal to mail abortion pills, they will probably be caught by customs. I have an asthmatic cat, she needs a daily dose from an inhaler of flixotide. I buy it fromglobaldrugsdirect.com at half the price I would pay here in the states, I still need a prescription, but they sell legal drugs with a prescripton. The drugs have to clear customs, but the shipment is customs certified.

I am not familiar with the case pending, but I believe it only applies to drugs being mailed, if so then you need a source in a state that can sell them, and have them shipped, by our source.

I see this as a business opportunity, the maker of mifepristone, Danco Labs, should, if they lose the case before SCOTUS, petition the FDA to release the patent so it can be OTC.

Late as always, but this time to a favorite soap-box of mine. To really get a broad picture of the horrific sociology for women at the time of Comstock, and detail about him and the politics of his Act, I see there are multiple cheap copies available online of Barbara Goldsmith's book "Other Powers."

I guess marketing was helped by a veneer of it's subject being "table-tipping" Spiritualists, but it turns out that was all in the mix of women abolitionists overlapping women suffragists sold out by Frederick Douglass who decided "half a loaf," ie voting rights for African-descended with penises was to be settled for: persons without penises had to wait 50 years. Susan B. Anthony was prosecuted for voting illegally. (Guilty!) but was not allowed to testify at her own trial, but not for why you might think. No penisless person was legally "competent" to testify in any court, because, you know, females not fully rational humans; not really able to comprehend significance of raising right hand. Offspring of female belonged to husband from conception. If she dragged herself away in fear he was going to kill her, she literally didn't own the clothes on her back, never mind any claim to her children. If a female happened to do any paying work, her earnings belonged to husband or father ab initio. Nonetheless, there were female institutions providing health care, including abortion, and these were some of Comstock's particular targets. The male medical establishment supported his Act because it profited them. "Government Jackboots?" you say? Congress gave Comstock personal status as a special Postal Inspector to go armed and haul in to custody any female he deemed improper. We only have had the right to vote since 1920! Blink of proverbial eye, sisters!

This has been my worry ever since R v W was overturned by the court, because one can see the writing on the wall for authoritarian government with a White Nationalist agenda, and a Supreme Court that is populated by members of the Federalist Society/Opus Dei. I am trying to get my daughter and her friends to be aware of these things. She is going to University in a country where the abortion laws need work, but birth control is not in danger. Also, there are supports for parenting that don't exist in the USA. I want her to have a choice of what kind of country she is going to live in. Watching rights get curtailed is something that it only takes a couple of generations to forget. Will that lead to acceptance of back alley abortions again, and the criminalization of care for women both with wanted and unwanted pregnancies? If this passes we can expect to see the life expectancy of American women drop.

Expand full comment

"...only takes a couple of generations...." Females have only had the right to vote in the Land of the Free (etc.) since 1920. I'm a bit hung up on that, especially since reading a history about the relationship between Suffragettes, who were also Abolitionists, and Frederick Douglass. The much-esteemed Douglass turned his back on the women to settle for voting rights for African-descended with penises. It took 50 years for (sub-human) females to get the vote.
